QUOTE(pr0pofol @ Apr 7 2013, 10:11 AM)
guys i hope somebody could help me with this problem:

i have a desktop pc with 4 hard drives full of data
now the pc gone kaput and since i have a macbook now i don't need to use it anymore
i'm planning to get a NAS so that i can use all the hard drives that i have wirelessly with my macbook
if i insert those hard drives into the NAS, can i still use the data (the hard drives are formatted as NTFS using windows 7 that is my previous desktop setup) or will it be formatted and become a newly erased HDD?
*
Most of the NAS doesn't support NTFS.
Because they are running Linux.
When you insert you HDD, it need to format into Linux format.
I suggest you buy 2 or 4 bay HDD enclosure connect with eSATA or USB3.

Proliant Microserver could be the answer, but it's quite rare here & maybe quite pricey now.

You can go for Synology. One setup could a bit pricey. Easy maintenance and seamless multi platform sharing (painless) upgrade. I believe it will fit you as you have the budget for a Mac as well.

You can see post #1564 on RAID information of the array.
I believe rational people would not go for RAID 0.

Looks like you need a DX513 soon, when you expand your SHR1 better data scrub first else might encounter problems mounting the volume.

ah missed that part... seems like RAID 5?

Anyway as for the RAID 0, i wouldnt necessarily call them irrational. They might have reasons for that set up, i.e. with another off site backup facility.

Guys, what is the expected lifespan of a synology NAS?
My DS410 is almost 3 years old, time to upgrade before the hardware dies?

How do you backup your data in the NAS? I worry when the circiut board in ds410 spoil it I can't move the disks to DS413 without data loss.

I just backup the important file. To the ext HDD. And across the network to another sinology.

But if your NAS spoil, just takeout the HDD and put it to a new 1. Why your data will loss? DS413 can run with 1 HDD right?

My DS410 runs raid 5 on 4HDD. I would need to put all the 4HDD into DS413 in correct sequence. Theoretically it should work lar...

Or I just buy a cheap DS1xx to network backup DS410? In case DS410 is dead I can restore everything from the dS1xx?

Is all the file in your 410 important? If not, just backup the important file. Get a ext HDD that enough for the backup.

Than ask the 4HDD can migrate to new NAS if spoil. At the synology forum. In theory, it should work.

My experience is the first 409+ is using 2hdd with raid0. When upgrade to 4hdd raid5, I backup all the important file out. Than change to 4HDD raid5. Install back the file. Those not so important file, I put the HDD into the ext HDD case, use Linux browser to extract the file into the new NAS HDD.

If you want safe way and plenty of money, you can get a 413 with 4hdd. Backup into it. Than wait for your 410 die. Sell away the old HDD and throw away the 410.

Check into the forum and see average what is the lifespan of a synology NAS. That would be easy for you to prepare and judge.

My 1 is already 4yrs and just recently spoil the adaptor. Brought 1 and running back like normal.

this is a very interesting info.... it seems that you can actually install synology DSM software in regular x86 computers. This could potentially make 1. DIY NAS very cheap and 2. easy to setup at the same time
