Hi guys,

Anyone here using a Buffalo cloudstation cs-x 2tb?

I just bought one. It was working fine and I spent the whole day backing up my data. Then all of a sudden, the blue light started blinking and the drive has been offline ever since.

Anyone have any ideas how to troubleshoot this? It has no screens or buttons and I cannot access the drive over the network via apps and directly through windows either.

Thanks.

Yeah, it's so frustrating. It was working fine and it was so easy to use, but now it's not working for some reason and there's no way for me to diagnose or fix.

Now I've tried rebooting the drive and the blue light is steady, but still the drive is offline.

Read the manual, they have a list, that states what the LED Blinks represent (At the back of the manual).

Quickest way to find out what is going on.

Should be able to, 1 drive at a time.
2TB+3TB on raid 0 will only give you 2TB. Better go buy another 2TB.

According to Synology user guide, it's offer SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID). Upon Google it says a system which different from conventional RAID i.e storage volume is created based upon the smallest disk. SHR will optimize the space & wasting nothing. Anybody has tried this ?

By the way, what is the fastest way to transfer from USB external HDD to Diskstation in large volume ? Using Teracopy it max to 26 Mb/s

I expecting more since USB 2.0 theoretical rate 60 MB/s. So, in real world cannot achieve.

I am planning on going to Low Yat on Sunday to get a 4 bay NAS. I don't want to spend too much - not over RM1k as I already have another QNAP459 4-bay NAS as my main storage and also a QNAP-201 as a backup. This new NAS is just for storage of videos and photos so speed isn't really important as long as it has 100MBps network - Gigabit would be better of course.....

At the moment I am leaning towards the DLink DNS-345 at about RM850. But thought I would check if anyone knows of a better deal on this one or another 4 bay NAS that will be in stock in Low Yat on Sunday.

I have 3 x 3TB drives already and a 1TB drive - all taken out of a Windows 7 64 bit tower computer as it is too difficult to keep track of them in the tower. So I just need the bare enclosure......and assume that I won't just be able to plug in the drives - I guess I will have to format them differently before they can go in the NAS?

Thanks,

Dave

Makesure it have high speed transfer rate and 32bit NFS. Otherwise, when you go for 3D stream, you will have problem.

Well that's the thing. The so called "manual" is one piece of paper, if you get what i mean, that just tells you to go to a website to login to the pogoplug website to maintain the hdd. Now it won't even come online. How am I supposed to "maintain" it? sad.gif

For your budget the DLink would probably be your only bet. I think several post back some one got a Seagate blackarmor too. If you got some allowance on your budget, an Acer Easystore or the HP Microserver if you can find them.
Do not bother to think you will need a Gigabit connection if you get the Dlink or any other SoC based NAS. most of them are too slow to saturate a 100Mbps connection anyway. but as ozak has said, and you have indicated, if you are streaming high bitrate video from the NAS do be careful in case the SoC NAS cannot stream fast enough.

Are you doing backup only? Or also using for storage?
If backup only, just get a Ext HDD... easier and cheaper tongue.gif

If you are using as a backup & file server, then NAS more convenient.

Get the Standalone NAS if you are using it solely to keep files only. Not requiring additional new disk/space in the new future. Not requiring any other "server" services. It is also cheaper and easier to maintain.

Get a PC based NAS if you need the upgrade path in the future, or may require server services like DHCP, WAMP server, or whatever you need. More expensive, but better upgrade path.

I get it for files storage and need RAID 1 or maybe RAID 10 as those files are very important laugh.gif

I guess NAS suit me since I no need any server feature, I believe it is more secure without server features notworthy.gif

Thanks for help, any recommended NAS brand or any more affordable Synology sweat.gif

you do not need a NAS to do RAID. You can easily get ESATA external enclosures to do the same thing without the hassle of network management.

look here some shops in Klang valley sells this

I definitely able to do RAID with my PC

I do stream media from another PC and some minor content sharing therefore NAS preferred

Ok, I was in a hurry as it was getting late so I got a Synology DS413j from CZone - RM1170 credit card price. Went home ready to get started on loading files onto it and put in 1st hard drive - 2TB. Says it needs to format it so I let it and watched a movie. Only had done a couple of percent at the end of the movie so I researched and found it should take 2 hours per TB to format! So left it overnight. Now 9 hours later I wake up and it is only 95.63% "Creating (Checking disc)". I hope that is the last step in the process and am glad I only put in 1 drive and not all 4 or this would take a week! :-)

I would suggest you get Synology. I have installed 3 units, and so far, all the units works flawlessly in SME environment, using it as a file server & backup server.

Synology is reliable.

I had also installed 2 units of the Buffalo 2 bay one.... 1 was extremely problematic.... their recovery process also a little different, since they the boot sector needs to be stored on the Disks, while the Synology already have a boot ROM.

At the end of the day, it depends on Budget vs Reliability.... you decide....

Not so much when the NAS is running, but when a disk "do" fail, how is the recovery process like?
