Over the weekend I shared that a reliable source mentioned Maxis is bringing iPhone to Malaysia. I've read some of your comments. Let me add the following new info. Maxis has worked on this project on a need to know basis. Only a small group of them were involved. They have recently announced & involved more managers as launch time is coming near. Officially Maxis is still denying involvement while no launch date has been provided, some of your speculation on launch date is correct.

I have been told that in one week's time the news will be announced to everyone. Their status is a go at the moment and they doing trials now. Billing, new network, price plans are all ready but has been kept highly secretive.

I believe maxis is not only not ready for their billing system. Their 3G system suck big time recently. My friend subscribes to the Maxis unlimited plan and has problem on using the mail function in iPhone. I did a check on his network / email settings. Everything is fine. It just didn't work. When he calls Maxis, they said they are in the midst of upgrading their 3G services. Probably that's in conjunction with the iPhone readiness and launching!

I just received a call from a polite Indian lady working at Maxis. (I'd written them an e-mail inquiring of the 3G packages offered as well as the rumours of the iphone 3G being brought in.)

The reply:
I quote "I would like to confirm with you that the plans are being worked out at the moment, but I apologize that we're still unable to give you a tentative launch date. But do keep a look out for media broadcasts in the next two weeks for the latest updates."

So I asked bluntly, "Does that mean Maxis is bringing in the iphone 3g?"

The reply, "Yes but the plans are being worked out."

My apologies for adding on to the current speculations, but just thought some of you may find it useful.

one thing for sure is there must be contract involved. with the MNP going on & Maxis will definitely use this opportunity to gain back its customers. cheaper than Singtel sets i mean as in getting the unit itself. if u subscribe to Maxis unlimited data plan & you fully utilise it & the phone is RM1.5k, it still consider cheaper right? provided the RM160 plan with 2 years contract is true. just a guess. that's why i used the word 'might'. and IMO, there will be different plans to accomodate different categories of customers. just like how Singtel and True Move in Thailand priced their iPhone with plans. possibility of outright units from Maxis might be present too. but, yet again, all of these are just speculations until Maxis decided to announce it.
