FAQ

Q: What should I do if I found some mites on my hedgehog?
A: Follow the steps below:
1. Buy Frontline Spray from petshops or vets.
2. Disinfect the toys and cage/container with detergent.
3. Use newspaper as the bedding and only put the food and water dish inside the cage/container.
4. Spray your hedgehog thoroughly with Frontline and avoid the face area.
5. Leave the hedgehog back in its cage/container for 3 to 4 hours and bath it after the duration so that it'll be free from Frontline.
6. Repeat Step 4 3 days later to make sure that the hedgehog is free from mites.
7. Usually the quarantine last for 7 days, remember to change the newspaper everyday. If you still find mites on the hedgehog after the quarantine period, repeat Step 4.
8. Find out the source of the mites if possible.

Q: Can hedgehogs travel? Will they get carsick?
A: Hedgehog dislikes traveling. It'll stress them out, and they might vomit or give watery poo, sometimes even weight loss. Leave your hedgehog alone if such problems occur. Let them settle down and rest first, so try to reduce the amount of traveling for hedgehogs. When traveling, use small, cozy and dark tank or container like shoebox with holes poked for air ventilation. Put thick clothes or woodshavings inside the container to make your hedgehog as comfortable as possible.

Q: Can I put 2 or more hedgehogs together?
A: No! Hedgehogs are solitary animals, meaning they love to be left alone than having companion.

Q: But I see my/my brother's/my sister's/my mother's/my father's/my grandfather's/my great grandfather's hedgehogs look fine living in group.
A: Unlike human, hedgehogs do not love companion, they don't cherish the friendship and it'll make them uncomfortable and even stress if put together. Please seperate them.

Q: But I see they didn't fight oso?
A: NO POK! NO POK!! NO POK IN RK HOUSE!!!! YOU WANT ME TO CALL THE POLICE IZZIT??? Are you blind, don't understand English or retarded? Want me to tell you how many time it's against their nature???

Q: How you know it's against the nature?
A: You have to die to know the answer.
Q: Why?
A: So you can ask God lah!

Congrats on version 5!

Wonder is it possible to add on the " recommended breeder list" besides the owner's list? So those who searching for a good breeder can actually know who to find?

Recomended hedgehog breeder: hungheykwun
I'm telling for the purpose of people/individual who wants to get good quality hedgies..
Not for anyone who plans to take advantage on her..

Hedgies are very easy and fun to take care of..
Please refer to 1st page as it contains as much info as you'll need on proper care for hedgies..
Thanks to Hao!! thumbup.gif

Only cloth recommended for hedgies is 'fleece'...
If any of you have problems where to buy fleece, please PM me..
I'll suggest a few places to find them..
Fleece are not available at fabric stores or kedai langsir..
To use fleece is easy (to use!!)
Just cut according to the measurement, tape some velcro and there you go..!
Fleece as Cim qouted before reduces up to 90% mites infection...

The only problem I faced using fleece with un-toilet trained hedgies are they'll make a damn great mess!!!
You'll definitely get a headache over it.. rclxub.gif
It's so hard damn to wash and it stinks!!!
I don't care what the all the 'sifoo' will comment bout this but I'm telling you guys, better use fleece for toilet trained hedgies only..
Plus, you'll need lotsa fleece liner sets so you could replace it often..

Anyway, using fleece, your cage will look so damn nice!

p/s- omisa, you should asked me for fleece & velcro coz i got extra.. sure can give you FOC.. tongue.gif

Cim, where are you sad.gif

You can use those travelling cage ar box shaped pouches from Bengy to transport your hedgies..
Kindly refer to Pet Shack as they could get you those stuffs..
err, no such thing as 'bonding pouches' for hedgies i guess..
the don't bond with us that way..

thx bonai for recommending me. havent been breeding since last year due to my trip to japan. the hog, i mean, not me. hehe...

im just a normal breeder, a generation later than crazymouse and hao. they're the pioneers , imho.

currently i have 4 hogs, 1 female i've retired frm breeding cos she got tumour which i got the vet in tmn megah to remove. tough old gal that one..

sheimi owned by rumizu is from my last batch and he has done an excellent job of taking care of him.

i ask a lot of the hog's parentage before i buy new hogs as i do not want to interbreed them among the same gene pool so some ppl think i'm fussy but im not.

glad to see this thread going on v5

will it effect the way they walk?

like make it harder for them to walk normally?

omisa : It would be good if u trim his nail after u bathed him...
cuz if not he will lick or bite his own nail i guess... cuz I was kinda curious why his nail din really grow.. so every time I wan to trim also cannot -.-"
then... one day I saw him put his leg into his mouth like biting biting the nail.. then I just assumed that if its too long and made him uncomfortable then he did it himself rather than wait for me laugh.gif

what good boy? so noisy lar... really can't tahan the noise -.-'
wonder how to teach him to stop pushing things... every morning sure can see an earthquake happen in his cage....

trimming tips... after u bath ur pokimon.. try to hold one of their legs see if they're comfortable or not... if they seems ok.. then cut the nails la.. but remember.. cut the one with white color nails... dun to short or cut too much.. cuz inside of it got the blood veils.. if u cut that... bye bye... ur pokimon will never let u touch his legs again laugh.gif

yep... last time when I put Ken inside my room.. the room is......
some more my room is back room.. so the ventilation not really good... anyhoo... the prob is might be because of the bedding... that's y we said must choose the right bedding... as for me, currently I used Aspen bedding that I brought from LYN member here... the smell is diff from others bedding but since I'm not putting him at my room anymore so I guess it's out from the question.

My suggestion is... if u wan to put it into ur room... better go for Breeder Celect. More expensive than other bedding but it really good as no smell at all from the bedding. no odor smell also... when I use breeder celect.. really no smell at all. U might consider using it though.

did u put male and female together?
if yes then u shud know that this kind of thing surely will happen..
and the mom won't eat them if u keep peeking at them..
she will only ignore the baby and didn't feed them..

for now, please let her in dat condition.. and u only need to give her food and water only.. don't change the bedding..

Dearie,

Memang, kalau boleh nak peek like every second.
I got the first peek at the little durians when I wanted to surprise zara, but got surprised myself biggrin.gif

But after that I refrained myself from peeking, which is very hard....
If you nak peek pun when she leave her babies untuk makan. I did that but I make sure zara tak perasanlah....

Am not sure I have hintz to give dear...
As I said earlier, nothing to worry. The mummy will know what to do...

cheers!!!!

It's 3 hoglets, 1 litter.... you got it wrong.

Do not ever peek. It would just disturb the female.

Also.... your hoglets most likely are inbred..... how come the seller never separate males and females?

One thing to worry, any inbred animal would have a shorter lifespan and weaker immune system..... for me it is not something to be joyful, is more like worry worry worry.....

There was such a case with my friend..... turned out her female mated with it's brother but the seller never said anything, kept denying not. From 3 hoglets, become 1.... vet checked, said immune system too weak, that is why died.... all coz of inbreeding.

So you better get yourself ready..... if your female is young, she may cannibalize or reject the hoglets if she is stressed. You better get milk on standby. I handfed hoglet that haven't open eyes before because my female rejected her hoglet and cannibalized 2. Stress of having a litter.... This is normal for 1st litters some times.

Give your hedgehog plenty of kitten food and water. Do not move the enclosure in any way. You can only start moving stuff around after 2 weeks.

Birth matter...

Dear guys.. To be honest, I sold the hedgie to omisa.. Anyway, I'm not the owner nor the breeder (p/s- I do not breed hedgies..).

I checked the hedgie with the previous owner and we found out she's not pregnant. I also make sure the hedgie is very healthy and free from mites.. I bathe the hedgie before it went to new home.. And also I make sure the hedgie is very very tame.. She didn't even quill up when omisa first held the hedgie.. Bout the pregnancy, maybe I'm not too expert yet to tell.. Yeah but I'm learning..

The hedgie was planned to be kept with a male albino for breeding purpose but after some time it didn't succeed anything at all.. So the owner plan to sell.. So no 'inbreed' confusion here..

I'm sorry if the hedgie gave problems to you.. However, I offer to pay back your money or take care of the hedgie & hoglets ( err, the previous owner will..) I do not leave my customers by themselves in any ways..
Sorry was a bit busy lately, you know la, weekends musicians sure have loads of gigs and shows..

Here's the number of the previous owner: 0172193620.. sms him if you have any questions.. but to let you know, I'm also here to help you out..
So sorry for any misunderstandings, I'm gonna make sure this won't happen in future..

Anyway, congrats omisa!

anderyna, Pet Shack got starter kits for hedgies..Please PM me and I'll direct you to it's thread... thanks!

Dear Bonai,

Yes, that hedgie is a very nice one. healthy, tame n playful. im very happy to have her. smile.gif

For the birth matter, its just a surprise. yeah, it freaked me out a bit. but when came to think bout it, maybe this chance wouldnt
come twice. (since i never intend to breed). so, i decided to raise the babies myself.
For this matter, im still a newbie. dats true. currently, im googling for info. going thru discussion forum in hedgehogcentral as well.
Any advice are welcome. notworthy.gif

Btw, the mama n her babies are having their own privacy. approached the box only when to add food n water. smile.gif

Do you hear squeaks? Hopefully you won't experience cannibalised young..... coz I did, that is why I had to hand feed my hoglet. Luckily she survived and ended up in a good home.

Give plenty of kitten food and water, you can only do cleaning after 2 weeks since birth.

Good luck.

Yups, that's the hoglet's sounds. As long you hear that everyday, it means they are fine and healthy. If no sounds, then there could be something wrong as this is from my experience. Hoglets squeak or chirp for their mom.

Btw, the mama n her babies are having their own privacy. approached the box only when to add food n water.  smile.gif
p/s: bonai, thanx for the support.  rclxms.gif

No offence but when you plan to keep all the babies, you have to plan to get new boxes for every hoglet, new bowls for each of them, new wheelss and etc...

Hedgies are solitary.. they don't live in family or colony...

Or worst, have to find buyers.. erm, i also have a hard time selling off my hedgies.. but i just keep holding on.. and great! came were few awesome owners like you buying my hedgies..

Keep the mom away from stress okay!

p/s- I never neglect any of my customers.. so if there's anything you need to ask for, just PM/sms me...

nice question

they are solitary and remain solitary
they do not act like human that need love and care towards opposite sex

are u thinking how they gonna mate if they are solitary right?
babies should be separate after couple of month from their mother when they do not need thier other milk anymore
if u put them longer with their mother , when the male mature ,they sart chasing the other

so they are solitary and if got any miscorerrect info ,do correct me
thx

Hi.

actually, im just gonna keep 1 baby to myself.
i wish i can take care for all of them. but, cannot r. no space and im afraid i'll be too busy for this semester.

have to find responsible owner for them r.
later maybe post some add in the garage sales. tongue.gif

okay, i'll keep doing dat. no peek2. nod.gif

@aleluya

yes, hedgehog is a solitary animal. in the wild, male n female will meet each other just for the mating process.

for the babies, they absolutely need their mother' milk. after the babies reached 6 weeks, they are old enuff to be separated.
have to separate male n female. coz if not, it would likely permitts inbreeding to happen.

hedgehog. damn cute. thumbup.gif

spend RM40 on a toyogo box then.

you can find it at jusco, carrefour, econsave, whatever supermarket out there. but just make sure it's deep enough that your hedgehog can't climb out from the box.

hedgehog that available in Malaysia is Algerian Color, there are lots of color varieties under Algerian.... @.@
Like mine, is Snowflake S&P but mine is heavy in snowflake so it fits under Algerian Grey as my baby's nose is chocolate... not dark or black. IF the nose is black and the quills color more to S&P then it fits under Algerian Black? err.. kinda forgot.. will search up again n give u the link we normally use to know which Algerian color our pokimon is smile.gif

sometime over half a year ago a regular forumer here, who's a hobbyist breeder, had posted something regarding importing pintos into malaysia. but apparently it's going to be a bit too long a process and kinda expensive to bring one in, so it didn't happen. looking at 4 digits' worth of hassle...wink.gif

that's all i recall, but if you have the time you can browse through V4 or even V3, i don't really remember when the discussion took place.

4 digits ar? well, mebi i ought to finish my studies first, get a good job and only then rethink bout pinto. tongue.gif

hey, can we produce pinto, locally? do we need some special colors of hedgie and then breed them together? could that produce pinto?

i'll try to google a bit. those who have info or wanna share opinion,
are absolutely welcome. thumbup.gif

for me, its normal.
give her some time to adapt to her new surrounding.
for bonding purpose, try to put some old cloth dat has ur smell on it.
u can refer dat at the first page.
dat way, she can recognize ur smell and being less afraid to u.

hope this will help.

mebi its just ur gurl attitude.
i always hand feed mealie to my gurl and she never bite my finger.
so whenever i put my hand inside her box, she'll come sniffing, like a habit.
even when my friend put his hand, my baby gurl just do the same.

is it ok if mix some mealie with kibble for my hedgie?
cos she seems to lost some weight after she delivered.

btw, just add some kibbles for her. then, got a quick peek. (she's eating her kibbles and leaving her hidebox.)

she's got 4 little hoglet. hehe. 1st time see hoglet. rclxm9.gif

may i know if you got it from a breeder or from the petstore?

hoglets around 3-4 weeks are not ready to be living independently because they still require the mother's milk. at this age it's not surprising that your hoglet is still crawling with the front legs because they're not really ready to be taken away from the mother hedgehog.

if your hoglet really is less than 2-months old, i suggest you PM crazymouse (one of the moderators in pets wonderland) and ask for her advices in handfeeding milk to your hoglet. i don't think there are many owners who're experienced enough to take care of hoglets as young as yours.

anderyna : congrats on having ur own pokimon. But try to scoop him up with bare hand.. not with any cloths or else... cuz by doing this, he can't bond with u... u just have to let him settle himself at the new environment. After he settles down then u can procees to the bonding process smile.gif

Climacool : I'm using living world hide box. The one with colorful box biggrin.gif or u can choose to use iglo house also. I found both also ok... but.. once they have hide box... hard to see them outside the box esp. for eat, drink, poo n pee...

at 4 weeks old i don't think they can eat solid food yet, you need to feed them milk. cat food kibbles are a bit too hardy for them to chew.

Food:
We have used either kitten milk replacer (kmr) or goat's milk, both have worked equally well. We typically mix the kmr using chamomile tea to aid in digestion. I have heard of others using lactaid (the people product) successfully, too.

Hello guys, you know yesterday I went to the Carrefour at Subang and upstairs they had a pet section where they had hamster, guinea pigs and also a hedgehog on display.

I was so sad yet frustrated to discover that the poor little albino hedgehog was having very bad mite problems. It kept scratching and scratching and scratching itself until there was blood. And a very large area near its rear was bald as all the quills there had dropped. I felt so sad for it. And it's like no one is taking of it.

So I took down the email that was displayed there and sent them an email.

Sigh. I hope they do something about it. sad.gif I feel so sad for the hedgie.

from my research, all the info says its ok to change the bedding after 2weeks. btw, the smell is 'nice'. sweat.gif

is it ok? does this mean i can touch the babies? or should i use cloth to handle them?

The size of the hoglet may vary.. Why? Because it also depends on how many litter that the mother gave birth to..

If a litter of 2, the baby may be bigger sized compared to a litter of lets say 5..

By right the time to separate them is 8 weeks.. That time the hoglet should be eating on its own already..

This is also to avoid inbreed as they mature quite fast..

hi guys. i'm newbie. I'm interested to buy a Sugar Glider last time, but since i have some problems that kept me from not getting one (don't have place)(but still want to buy one after finish study). after i read about hedgehog at this thread, I think it's really suits me and i'm ready to give commitment.
the fact that the foods for them is easily to get makes me want to buy one. tame and cute for sure lah.haha

i have some questions bout the hedgehog to ask to you guys.

1) Hedgehog is diurnal. So, it should be no problem if they were exposed to the fluorescent light rite?like sugar glider cannot exposed them directly to light. so, i need to be sure bout that.

2) i'm not really getting about the cage setup. From what i understand, you guys bought toyogo box to keep hedgie inside. Is there dedicated cage for them that can i get?

Thanx in advance!

i believe that is what we called 'fleece'.

a type of liner that is acceptable to use as a bedding for hedgehog.
its a substitute for normal wood shaving.
also, highly recommended coz not messy, easy to clean, free from mite and can easily spot blood in case of emergency.

of course not. smile.gif

hermph. that's a good question. i, myself find it hard to find.
maybe i wasn't looking at the right fleece.
as fleece is a type of fabric, u can check at ur fabric stores.

well, usually people will make 2,3 set of fleece liner.
when 1 get dirty, clean the poo 1st. then throw in the washing machine or u can hand wash it.
u see, this is when the extra set is important.

I have a question. Hedgies do they usually poop at one similar spot? Or it varies everytime? And how do you clean the poop? If you're using a fleece that is.

well, it depends on the hedgie itself.

one always poop n pee at the same spot, where others just do it where ever they like.
if the fleece gets dirty, clear all the poop first. u can use plastic spoon to do this. then, just put it in the washer.

If u really decided to buy a pet.. more over its the 1st time u're getting the pet... 1st expenses sure MORE expensive than 2nd expenses. So, I think buying cage, bedding, food n drinks bowl, hidebox, etc for the 1st time sure expensive as u buy it one spot smile.gif

yeah. its as silent as its name. hehe.

just that u have to put like ceramic bowl or sumthing heavy under it to prevent it from tip off.
altho its kinda expensive, as long as it safe and the hedgie enjoy it, then it should be fine. nod.gif

there's a method to know how much you should feed your pets..
I'm just too lazy to post it here.. PM/sms me and i'll tell..

usually kibbles/food are thrown after left overnight..
some hedgies might be fed once a day or twice..
it depends on the hedgie..

it's all about exploring your pets..
understanding their behaviour is fun!

just that u have to put like ceramic bowl or sumthing heavy under it to prevent it from tip off.
altho its kinda expensive, as long as it safe and the hedgie enjoy it, then it should be fine.  nod.gif

Better get a bigger tank. More space for the pokimon. In fact, some of the basic things might take up quite some place. My pokimon stays in a 3ft toyogo box cause the hideout and wheel take most of the place.

owh really?i'm just started surveying the kitten food price.
just now look at the orijen cat food price. 2.5kg for rm50.never expect the cat food can be that expensive(since i'm never have a pet before).

Royal canin easy to get ya?do u use the kitten food Royal canin?
i'm worried if the food is not that easy to get, then it should be big problem lah.

if i want to "bela" a hedgie, is 400gm will last for one month?or do i need to get a big pack of catfood?

yes, im using Royal Canin.
currently using RC Kitten 36.

my opinion, if u find it hard to find RC in ur area, u might want to get the big pack. it will last longer and save u petrol cost a bit.

but the best thing is to mix at least 2 diff brand of the kibble.
for ex. Royal Canin and Orijen.
if one day ur RC stock finish, u can feed ur hedgie with Orijen.
hedgie can sumtime be cerewet tau. nod.gif

hey.thanx for sharing.
i just started digging info in old hedgehog thread and just realise how hedgie can be fussy on their foods.
right now just worried bout their food lah. for now, just knowing the good brand for hedgie(orijen, Royal Canin or maybe Acana).
i wonder how long can a 2.5kg pack last? if 2.5kg can last for a month (RM50-RM60), then it would be gud lah.(just ngam ngam lah with my pocket money)

personally i'm mixing three types of RC catfood, babycat 34, kitten 34 and fit 32. i got the large pack of babycat 34 since both my hedgehogs take this one without hesitation, my S&P hedgehog usually throws all the fit 32 out of his bowl although occasionally he finishes up everything. the other one eats anything i put into the bowl.

even the 400g pack will be able to last for more than a month, based on my experience, but like bonai, i feed them once a day, approximately 1.5 tablespoon (mixture of all three types of catfood) everytime.

and feeding them mealworms twice a week, about 5-6 per time.

hope it helps.

Lolx... 2.5kg is way too much for a pokimon. 400g pack already can last me for a month for my pokimon. In fact, if you do not have more pokimons to feed, the kibbles will not be fresh if you keep it too long after open.Just get 400g pack already can.

hey guys!
really appreciate your help!i have no idea the food consumption for a hedgehog before. if a 400g pack would last for one month. then it should be great for me. no need to worry bout their food anymore lah.

may i know. Are all RC products are available with 400g packs?i'm thinking of mixing RC with Orijen. if both RC & Orijen do have 400g(small pack), then it should be really great!

Thanks guys!

We can't get 400g packaging for Orijen here. Smallest pack will be the 2.5kg for Orijen. As for RC, you should have no problem on locating it in most of the petshop.

i think you'll need to go around to search for 400g RC packs. i went to more than half a dozen shops but couldn't find any RC34 (babycat & kitten) last month, not sure if it's because the stock hasn't arrived or what. took me 2 weeks of searching before i finally bought the 2.5kg pack, had to since i was running out of catfood then.

if you happen to buy the 2.5kg pack (like me), make sure it's properly sealed to keep it fresh. my hedgehogs won't eat the kibbles after it's left out for one night, smart fellas...wink.gif

so RC34 is for babycat & kitten?or is it sold separately(RC34 babycat & RC34 kitten), which one is recommended for hedgie? Rc34 kitten rite?
sorry lah for asking stupid question since i've no one else to ask except for friends at LYN here.

Both also can. Just that RC36 babycat is higher in fat compare to RC34 kitten. I started with babycat for my pokimon and later on intro RC34 kitten for him. But best if you can start with 2 different brands and mix it. Cause most pokimons stick to RC once they have tasted it. tongue.gif

thanks for the clarification.
about the foods. that's what i'm planning to do.mixing 2 different brand. so the 1st brand is RC34 kitten.
any suggestion for other brand?i'm try to look for the brand that sell small pack(e.g 400g).then easy to mix the food lowh.
since orijen only get 2.5kg for the smallest pack, not suitable lah for me. coz only want to have a hedgie only.

personally i think 32 fit is more suitable for hedgehogs because of the lower fat content, but while one of mine eats anything i put in the bowl, the other one usually rather not eat if i feed 32 fit only, which is why i'm mixing up a few RCs now. but as long as they're doing their part and running in the wheels everynight i guess it's alright.

perhaps it's because i fed it with the smaller kibbles (34 kitten & babycat) since young, the hedgehog doesn't enjoy the bigger kibbles of 32 fit.wink.gif

RC 32 fit. how much is the fat content in it?
i tot all RC are quiet low in term of fat.
currently using RC 36. protein is 36% and fat is 18%.
if 32 is lower, might wanna change lor.

Actually the lowest should be the RC27 but the kibbles are quite big in size. For those owners who try to help their pokimons to keep fit, RC27 is good for it as the fat content is low. IIANM, the higher the number for RC, protein % is high and the fat % is high too.

If yours is a baby, better don't. Cause that also mainly for keep fit. Start your pokimon with RC36 or RC34. Then when grows older slowly change to RC32.

For the wheel... they wont know how to play with it if they doesnt know what's the wheel for. U can try to put them into the wheel and slowly move it... after that just leave it be there... some knows how to play it within days but some need more time smile.gif

As for Ken.. he finally play with it after a week I left the wheel...

I'm using zoozone 1 for Ken.... for zoozone 1, if u put food bowl, hidebox, litter tray is already FULL... also dun forgot bout the wheel...

As for me, zoozone 1 seems ok and Ken have lots of space also despite all those things cuz my food bowl is quiet small so he still got place to run here n there... I only put the wheel at night then took it out in the morning so he have plenty of space in daytime smile.gif

Male or female is depends on you... I think both are goods. It depends on u wan to take which one smile.gif

For litter tray, take triangle better.. can put at the corner smile.gif

Hello Guys,

My first post in this thread.

First I like to say is ... I GOT A HEDGEHOG ! rclxms.gif

Second thing is ... the little guy is not tame sad.gif Always angry and doesn't trust people.

I gave it treats, gently petting it, look at it, talked to it for more than 30 mins at one time everyday and many times each day when it is awake. Constantly in return all i get is a grumpy stare, "don't mess with me" kinda impression and "get lost and get outta my face" message from the little fellow.

So my question,

How long does it take to actually begin to be friendly? I know it is a really cool pet and all, and trust me I really love my hedgehog but the little guy has a different set of perception on me.

Do advice thanks.....

I was thinking if the one I have has the soul of a TIGER mad.gif I have no choice but to return it back to the store. sad.gif

i don't think a hedgehog can be as friendly as how i think you hope it would be.

as most of us already know, hedgehogs' temperaments are inherited, so if it's grumpy it's very unlikely that you can change it's temper that easily. of course, previous owner's care plays a part as well. if it's used to not being handled by human, it's natural for the hedgehog to raise its quills when they see unfamiliar moving things.

besides, hedgehogs are solitary animals, not like dogs, you can play with it all day long and it will still be like how it is because it's how they behave.

but don't judge your hedgehog so fast, many owners here have hedgehogs with all sorts of temperaments, and everyone have a story to tell, so maybe your grumpy pet will turn out to be a great pet for you. smile.gif

LM : twice a week... wont it be too often? xD mine.. usually bath once a week or once 2 weeks if I'm too busy biggrin.gif

to those new owner, pokimon wont be as tame as a dog or what u expect them to be... the words tame means they wont poke u or bite... cuz pokimon that not tame they tend to poke ppl and bite if they felt annoyed..

She was actually looking for me (looking for food la actually). But anyway, I find it as good progression as now she thinks of me as a food dispenser and hopefully not as a prey anymore. I gave her a treat before i left and i hope for all the best later tonight when i'm home.

So happy that my little durian-like friend is giving me hope. icon_rolleyes.gif

Cheers*

From,
Subang

Well I read other threads that say it is common to have rashes for the first few times when handling a poki. After awhile it will go away. In my case, my rashes are spreading. I'm now down with slight fever and the symptoms shows that I cant handle them.

I'm so disappointed. sad.gif

tis is the first time i heard that ppl are allergic to hedgie
they dun have furs that might cause discomfort

mayb its juz a coincidence
try not to come into contact with it for a couple of days till u recover.

then try to make contact with it again see how.

i never have any rashes for as long as i am keeping my hedgie

feeding him royal canin? hmmm... maybe 2 tablespoon? teaspoon maybe 4-5? thats for a day la.
if u want feed 2 times a day, then pandai pandai. u just test his appetite. some may eat less.
so u give, and see how much balance or so.
mealworms, 10-15 a day? aint too sure too.

I read at first is was normal that the quill will give us little redness at itchiness. Then in time we will develop an antibody for the itch. In my case the redness and itchiness starts from the palm all the way up popping to my arms and back. And ya... I'm one of those sad cases who are allergic to hedgies.

Kelvin : I never fed ken meal worm only fed him cat food like RC... for my case I fed him twice a day, morning before go to class and at nite before go to sleep. I put just about 2 table spoon each feeding. Meal worm... dun put too much.. 10-15 is consider too many la -.-" meal worm is just as a treat.. better not fed them everyday, u can fed meal worm like twice a week? maybe just.. 5-6 once feeding... too much later fat -.-"

Also, because ur pokimon is 1 years old, how bout giving him RC adult rather than babycat n kitten? if feed those 2 u'll getting a fat hedgie...

echo : did u go to doctor and they said its an allergic? Just feel a bit weird thou tongue.gif never heard got ppl allergic with pokimon. Anyhoo, to make sure, please wash ur hand with soap before n after play with her then it shouldnt be a problem. How bout u try it 1st for one week? last time when I just got back my pokimon, I did felt an itchy at my palm n sometimes it grows till my hand but I always wash my hand before n after handling him so till now I got no problem n no more itchy when play with him smile.gif

Muchan : I got with him, a container, wheel, water bottle, bedding, and RC 36.. Is RC 36 ok for him?? tongue.gif

And so far so good la.. I mean he just do his own business in the zoozone, as i walk here n there he doesnt seem to mind at all.. And was always looking where am i going.. STALKER ALERT!!

Haha.. I do try to put my hand near him, [from previous owner : He will try to poke with his quils, so have to avoid from being poke by withdrawing..], but for my case, the more he poke, i just leave my hand there, and nearer.. So he knows dat i am not afraid of him.. I even put my both palm inside, he just walk above them!! Haha

Hope that i can scratch him by the ear and neck la.. So damn cute.. Still thinking bout the name though.. Gonna start with a Mister in front.. hehe

kelvin : better remove the yellow food bowl there.... as for my experienced... Ken tend to pee n poo in the bowl aka in his food because the bowl too big and his whole body can fit in so he just pee n poo there while eating. If u just provide the small bowl for him, he will go find a spot to poo n pee so u wont waste the food.

Since u dunno how many the fella can eat.. for the 1st 2-3 days u can just follow as I said. Fed him twice a day to see if he can finish all food that u gave means on the next morning there's no food left in the bowl.. smile.gif

for bathing, I used Johnson&Johnson wheatgerm baby shampoo for Ken smile.gif
maybe u can try that one too.. and becareful when bathing him. Dun let the water go inside his ear and make sure u dry him enuf before returning him into the cage.. later they catch a cold..

Good luck with ur MR. HUMPREY!!! smile.gif

He keeps ignoring me!! Only when i sleep, he comes to play in his wheel.. When he see's me angry coz disturb my sleep, he runs faster!! Is he smart or what? Gonna see if he is doing it again tmr morning..

He likes to sleep, then eat a few knibbles, then went back to sleep.. Is that normal?? He only uses the wheel in the early morning.. As early as 5am till 7am, then he dozzes of again.. He wont pee n poo anywhere except his wheel.. I am doing spot cleaning everyday.. I do realised he will only poo when he uses the wheel in the morning..

Got a great bargain la from a friend. That's why gonna get another zoozone 2.. Dis zoozone not a package like from petshack.. Just zoozone 2 basic stuff like feeder, nylan bottle hanger and hay holder.. Hehe..

Hehe.. At least i have some progress here!!

N did u know dat, when he unrolls, i let him down to walk around.. he will walk nearby me, just a while la, then gona sleep again..

sometimes when my friends come to my room [the news dat i have a "mini porcupine" spreads fast] to see him, he will hiss a lot till they r gone.. he is really sensitive with smells!! when they r gone, and i touch him, he unrolls again.. hehe me so happy if he begins to accept me..

i bring him out to the greens for a short walk, always stay alert if he bite the grass, dont want to get him poison ma.. he will venture then come to me, then venture again, if i put the cloth down, he will quickly come n take a sit there, as if i train him to come to me.. so funny..

will try do that to train him, a way to pick him up.. hehe

yours could be what most of us here term as snowflake, but to be honest it's quite hard to put a specific colour on the hedgehogs as they are categorized in many aspects. from description i think it could be a dark grey or grey.

while we're still in this topic, i think i can roughly assume that we have termed our hedgehog colours quite wrongly as very few of us have real salt & pepper. the majority of hedgehogs we see here are usually dark grey, grey, chocolate and i think there's a lucky few who have cinnamon or cinnicots too. and from the pictures i think we all have algerian hedgehogs.

salt & pepper hedgehogs have cream quills with 'black' bands. ours usually are dark brown bands or somewhere there.

meanwhile, it's not a snowflake unless the banded and white quills are evenly spread (50/50) or approximately there. but i think we messed up the categories as many petstores try to sell off their hedgehogs at a higher price by categorizing them as snowflakes even when they have like 20-30 white quills only.

i don't have any snowflakes so i can't show you any pictures, but i do own an algerian grey (with few white quills) and another one which i assume to be an algerian white. what type of white i'm not too sure (there's chocolate white, cinnamon white, blah blah blah you get the picture), but it's actually from bonai, and he told me it's a snowflake back then, hahaha...wink.gif

one of mine looked to be a snowflake when it was still a hoglet, but as he grows more and more white quills shed and are replaced with banded ones...wink.gif

I think all are the same, depends on the hedgehog's individual personality. Where did you observe this?

Nonsense tongue.gif
There's nothing such as albino harder to tame and cinnamon are easy to tame sweat.gif
both my S&P n S&P Snowflake are tame.... I just need approx 1 week they already tame and let me pet their quill etc.
Taming not because of their color but more to how much effort u put on them.
If u spend more time with them and regularly play with them, they will trust u and this is called tame

5)Hide box: Diz 1 i Try to DIY first...If he is not comfortable, will bought a proper 1 for him..

6)Toys:Haaa, if anybody out there have any extra exercise wheel, the one that have a solid or mesh-covered running surface,it would be nice if u could sell it 2 me..

Congrats on your new family member. What colour is it?

How big is your aquarium?

People say fleece for bedding. But I'm lazy to wash it. hehe.

I don't think they have the habit of chewing things, let alone metal nozzle. From what I observed they like to hold new objects in their mouth to get the taste or feeling of what is it, after that, they'll leave it alone.

I use DIY ais cream box as hide out for my hedgie, but he prefer to use it as his toilet and he loves to sleep inside rolled up newspaper.

Wheels I think you can find it at Petshack, other places usually don't have the right size for hedgehogs.

Hei guys long time.

Mr Moogle's is very active on the wheel, and even though i leave a bunch of kitten food in it's bowl, it's weight isn't as fat as Henrietta. Probably because he runs alot.

Anyway Mr Moogle's seems to have some sort of red inflation below it's left eye. Could that be a mosquito bite or some sort of cancer growth ? 1 Week ago i don't think it had it.

Is there a good hedgehog vetenerian near Petaling Jaya, Selangor i could take my Hedgehog too ? Please i need the address.

^Kelvin : why put my name to answer those Q? tongue.gif

Whiskas or any cheap brand.. IS NOT SUITABLE FOR POKIMON!!! It's best to feed them RC and u can give them worms for twice a week as their threats also some veggie or fruits if u want too smile.gif

It's the best to start with RC Kitten... but since ur hoglet is just 2 months old u can try to crush the kibbles into half as it's a lil bit too big for the hoglet. I start by RC babycat cuz the kibbles is smaller.. but then u have to changed it into kitten or adult RC as Babycat made them FAT =.="'

I suggest u to buy RC kitten as the starter and ask Omisa what he fed his hoglet. If he feed them diff kibbles try n ask if he can spare a lil bit of his kibbles and then slowly mix it with RC that u bought to made them eat urs..

Good luck for the bonding and congrats for the new owner! smile.gif

Hurmm i tink wheel is not a compulsory for them but its good 2 have 1, correct me if i'm wrong..

The thing is, the pokemon needs something 2 play with..As long as he/she luv the toys, no problem dude..

But if u could spare some money, a wheel would be great for ur pokemon huhu...

I'm trying 2 buy 1 also..

Hahaha if omisa say its important, then u better get 1 huhu.... tongue.gif

Is it tower or towel? Btw, both r not suitable la.. A kind of fabric call fleece is suitable.. Better u use the breeder clelct or chipsi classic bedding first, then when ur higlet is potty trained, then only u use fleece to line ur hoglet enclosure.. hehe

hai teddie.

i would like to suggest to u to let it settle down first.
let him to take some time to get used to r smell.
btw, does the old cloth have your smell on it?
if yes, just be patient a bit. he will recognize u soon. nod.gif

as for the bite, i did tell you that he is now being through quilling process rite?
i think that's why he did bite you. you are new to him + stress from quilling. my advice is, just let him settle down 1st. give him a week.
after that, you can start to get knowing each other.

good luck!! icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks everyone.

I gave Yeoh a call he is a nice guy said to use anti septic cream first. If got any problem ask to bring to him. At least he gave free advice over the phone and i never been to him before thumbup.gif

He said a sick hedgehog wouldn't be moving around much. But looking at mr moogle's its way over active so i guess he is ok. The inflation just got me scared a bit sweat.gif

One thing i like about my hedgehog is when it rolls up and pokes its head up and u can see its quill fringe go up and down. Kinda looks like tin tin laugh.gif so kawaii.

Yeah i was thinking about giving it a cloth but i read somewhere hedgehogs can get hurt by cloth threads. I was scared it would get hurt which is why i never leave any cloth around for it shocking.gif

I pity mr moogle's because it's wooden house doesn't seem good enough for it. Any ideas about making a good house for it ?

glad to know that mr. moggle are save now smile.gif

cloth not dangerous for them, but towel yes...
because their small n fragile foot can stuck into the small gap of the towel.. that's y we never recommend towel as the bedding instead of fleece bedding.

Hehe.. Now u sound like me last time.. tongue.gif

Okay, basically get the largest u can afford ya.. If u wanna put hidebox, litter tray, wheel, food bowl, then zoozone 1 will be crowded unless u can be like muchan, nite put the wheel only, morning take it out.. so still got place for him to move around..

I use zoozone 2 = very spacious, till like u wanna add new thing inside.. even u have all what they need d.. hehe smile.gif

Try get zoozone 2 la, but do u have the space to place it? And zoozone is no longer in production d.. better buy when u see one ya!

once I put it back.. he will hide inside and can only see him when he's hungry which is early morning while I'm dreaming..... =.="
also... without house.... can easily spot his funny sleepin style laugh.gif

well... It's good for u to learn n to know what is ur pokimon attitude n behavior. U have to see n check or know what he likes n dislike. Same as what babymoli said, because pokimon born with diff behavior from one to another. smile.gif

make sure u keep on checking if he really did his business inside the tray...
as for my case last time... 1st day he did good but it only last for 1 day laugh.gif

But if he really use his tray as a toilet u should be happy to get a smart pokimon smile.gif

Hello guys... long time didn't post here. Been so caught up with college.

Hmm I'm thinking to buy my baby Oakey a ZooZone 2, as then I can put his wheel in. Currently his housing now not enough area to leave the wheel in the whole day, I only put it in at night.

However, I'm afraid the ZooZone 2 would be abit difficult to clean. =/ Does anyone here provides a ZooZone 2 for their hedgies? Do you guys use wood shavings or cloth liners?

Hi Nikki.. Me using Zoozone 2.. And Chipsi Classic, not to say too difficult to clean as i do "SPOT CLEANING" everyday.. to dispose the pee poo before they bulilt up, amount of pee poo n odour.. Its more hygenic that way.. Zoozone 2 is da best option so far for me.. Coz spacious and u dont have to susah2 do a cover on top.. They comes with a lid cover d ma..

However, I'm afraid the ZooZone 2 would be abit difficult to clean. =/ Does anyone here provides a ZooZone 2 for their hedgies? Do you guys use wood shavings or cloth liners?
*
I'm using zoozone 1 and I only put the wheel at night and will take it out in the morning as I need to close the cover lid.
If u using silent wheel, its the same with zoozone 2, after u put in the wheel u can't close the lid cuz the wheel stand to high. And I'm using Breeder Celect as bedding cuz no smell at all smile.gif If I'm free I will do spot cleaning as Kelvin said cuz I need to take n throw the poo inside his litter tray everyday, if not he will not poo inside the tray =.= but if I'm busy or lazy tongue.gif I will do cleaning once a week. Not hard thou just throw all the bedding n change into new one.

One more thing, if u really decide to buy zoozone 2 better think carefully as for now, they have stop the production of zoozone 2 due to the company have a better idea for the new product. You can try to search at garage sales if not mistake got ppl wanna sell of their zoozone 2

Talk bout Ken now... just finish cleaning his cage and shower him as this is his 1st bath after a month due to I'm busy. Guess what... when I put the towel on top of him to dry the quill.... his quills cover up the towel!!! rclxub.gif
I guess this is means by dry skin lol his skin too dry as I din bath him for a month also ended up he's mad at me as he never like shower laugh.gif

Hahahaha.. I like toyogo box more. Easy for me. In fact, lazy bum Ren doesn't play prison break. The box I got for him also wide enough to put all his things in. Wheel, 2 bowls, his igloo hideout & 2 of his toys.

Hahaha.. The toyogo box is around 2 1/2 ft - 3 ft. Slightly shorter than zoozone2. Yeap. He'll push the igloo when he feels want to. Once a while, I'll see the position changes.

Oh, how often do you guys change the bedding? I'm currently using bed liners and I change it everyday because it gets stinky and icky.

Nikki : I change every 2weeks, coz i only pick up pee poo area and throw away. If the bedding too thin, then i will add to make the bedding thick.. By 2weeks time, i clean the cage thoroughly.. hehe blush.gif Toyogo box also ok la.. Saw they got sale in Carrefour.. But still RM45 - 50 plus..

Btw, do you guys recommend shavings or bed liners if I intend to keep my Oakey in a larger housing?

If u think u can wash the cloth liner often then u go for that.... but if u're quite busy or the lazy type... BC is the good choice. I used BC an the method same as babymoli. Do spot cleaning n I only change it when I think its dirty. Or once a month when its not dirty smile.gif

Lol I'm just afraid I might have enough time as college is getting so busy these days. Hmm...maybe I might change to using shavings as I can do spot cleaning.

Usually how much shavings do you put in? About 1 inch thick enough?

Nikki, if you have budget, I would suggest you to use Breeder Celect. This is better than wood shaving. Less dust & odor control is a lot better than wood shaving also BC can last longer than wood shaving.

Can use for mongolian, fat tail, hamster and hedgehog, not to mention my sugar glider too.. hehe.. breeder celect is a recommended bedding..

^yep.. if u have more budget I suggest u to take BC as what mentioned by babymoli n Kelvin. I'm using BC for both my pokimon n glider... its odorless and u can use it for long time. Last time I used wood shavings and its already smell on the 2nd day =.=" also... sometimes I see the shavings stick into Ken's tummy and its really hard to pull the shavings. So I have to bath him in order to pull the shavings n he did looks pain when I try to pull... so.. better go for BC if u can manage too...

Yea.. Very agree with muchan. I always find wood shaving stick on the part Ren annoit. It is so difficult to take it off even that part is wet. So BC is best to use as I don't have this problem anymore.

Hi guys, im a new hedgie owner here...well i just got my pet hedgie last week or 2 ago...I got it smuggled from Thai and it's pure milky white colour from the nose to the tail..im not very good with hedgie.. any1 can tell me wat breed can he be?

Anywayz, this post is kinda long.. i actually read the first page to 15...or page 16 n my neck hurts liao~~~ My hedgie is kinda fierce... really untame... i actually tried the "bonding steps" but when i hold it up, it actually tries to bite me n wanna jump away from my hand to escape. and.. it poos everywhere i place it.
cry.gif anymore tips i can knw? >.<

Oh yeah... im living in penang now. i found hedgie food from a pet shop but they sell nothing else for hedgie... bedding is a big prob too, I never see such bedding as BC, Chipsi classic or so... watever aspen oso dun have (not even for hamsters). I found some wood shaving which is kinda rough but dun think it's good for my Echt.. How then? Any1 from penang here? Or know any tips where I can get bedding for my Echt in penang?

(can I use chipsi plus green apple for hedgie or not? weird the petshop here sell chipsi green apple or some cheap rough bedding only)

Hi, first of all welcome to pokimon family. As what color of your pokimon, you need to post up picture only can tell you. Try to gain its trust slowly. Give some treat but not too much. Give your old shirt (which u have wore & don't want anymore) to him/her. Let it at least know your smell.

BC is Breeder Celect - type of recycle paper. Don't use those wood shaving that with smell. Is not good for their nose. I think where to get the bedding in Penang have to wait for them to tell.
