Old timer growing up watching the original star trek series/movies like me will appreciate this movie
Gen Y/Z might find it boring in terms of the plot, but they'll enjoy the eye candies

first, Klingon!
well... kinda disappointed when the helmet are removed, feels more plastic and less menacing than the original Klingon doh.gif

and the ending, and I thought they'll pay a tribute to the original Star Trek II by sending Spock too... and alas, it's another way round laugh.gif
But the death scene aren't as touching as the original one wink.gif

Also, I'm not really a Trekkie, can anyone tell me if the original Spock lost his temper before and ran amok?

Also didn't watch it in 3D, as it's a post production 3D, and based on the 2D, it's great, and IMO it's not suitable to convert to 3D, due to many of JJ's signature shaking cam and light flares... 3D will loose out lots of details, and making you dizzy laugh.gif

I have to say that I agree with you on this. The original series was groundbreaking for tackling issues like existentialism as well as morality issues, like whether the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. But it has such a naive innocence to it, owing to the 60s - 70s sensibilities it was made in, it would never survive today's cynical audience.

However, I think even TNG would never survive today's audience, as it was never "fashionable" with the modern audience to begin with. That's why the series all died, by the 2010s. People have shorter attention spans and prefer style over substance. JJ Abrams was roped in for this exact reason. To make star trek fashionable again.

In a way, that is sad isn't it...

I remember that when Star Trek The Next Generation was release, it took sometime for it to come to our shore (how we survived without the internet in the late 80s and 90s I don't know). The local TV station were reluctant to show Star Trek TNG because, and I quote "It is TOO cerebral"....

Apparently our education system was already THAT bad back then...

The Imax Theater in Sunway was quite full on the 26th May (8:30pm show)... Though come to think about it, not as full as when I went to see Iron Man 3 (which I saw a week after it's launch)

Now I really fear for Star Trek 3... sad.gif

heard rave reviews about the movie, but from the series fans. Now.. if i were to go in, having never watched anything star trek related before would i still find it a great movie? or is this something just for the fans, or at least people who know something about the franchise?

after you watch it in IMAX, you will not want to watch it in regular 2D/3D anymore

before watching this newest one, make sure u let them watch the previous one first, because the previous one just sums up everything about the characters which made the new Star Trek movies so attractive to none fans. my wife isn't a Star Trek fan, she isn't even a sci-fi fan, she literally doesn't watch ANY kind of sci-fi space movies in her life, she hasn't seen any Star Trek, Star Wars or Star Gate movies but she loved the previous Star Trek reboot movie.

I don't think that's necessary. Coming from someone who just watched it recently. Both films of course. If you want it to help you understand better, then yeah it would.

The moment i left the movie theatre, deep down i feared that will happen. As i said, I liked what JJ did on the first. this no matter 'how' entertaining (action wise, cinematography, etc), didn't break new grounds, older viewer will quip on some 'things' and this and that.

i dont know. Perhaps the younger demographics prefer more 'twilight' & 'hunger games' ? no no not putting a dig on those type of movies but yeah i mean, perhaps whistling.gif

it would help a big deal to watch the previous one because of all the character details. it's perfectly fine to just watch this newest one but the viewer will be confused of who's who if he/she didn't watch the first one, and it will take a lot of fun out of it. so I insist ppl who didn't watch the first one go watch it , then only watch this new one.

We had the tv and vhs before the internet, remember?

Its not education which was the problem, its the ppl mentality and their environment. Why bother watching scifi show when you have shows that dont require much if any thinking like scenario and raja lawak, or if you like your movies like rempit etc.

Plus riding on your motorcycle with your mates and making havoc and a fool of yourself is more "in" then watching scifi shows.
