Damn this movie has breakneck pacing. A thoroughly entertaining 2 hour+ blockbuster, quite expertly staged in a mainstream-friendly manner to tick all the mass audience cravings. JJ Abrams is pretty damn good at this eh? His movies have little to no depth, but boy can he present it in a sleek, easily consumable package. It's fast food, but you gobble it down anyway.

That said I prefer the 2009 one. I think that had better character dynamics (especially between Kirk and Spock), plus I'm maybe one of the few who loved the daft alternate universe concept in that one. I also think the villain in this one is underdeveloped, or maybe just underutilized- Harrison's origin is a bit haphazardly presented, and it feels as though the movie would be building towards a sensational showdown between him and the good guys but it never quite materialized in the end. Not to mention there's quite a lot of convenient plotting in the way the life pods are hidden.

Cumberbatch is good and he commands the screen, in a very outwardly, conspicuous way. I prefer Bana, whose subtle but palpable terror was quite a masterclass in acting.

All things considered, just go watch this one.

P/S: I'm no trekkie.

Btw, Hallf 4 in GSC is f***ed up. The alignment or something isn't right, you see a purple line next to outlines, particularly evident next to words. The cnter speaker is also f***ed. Also, the censorship f***ed up as well. There were like 4 or 5 cuts, and I had no idea what was cut. It seemed like they were all for language but this is PG13 fare, what the hell could have been said?!

laugh.gif I never meant to discourage people from watching the Star Trek series by stating the number of episodes!!

At least try out the Star Trek The Next Generation!

I know alot of fans would probably criticize me for not recommending the original

I just think that to modern viewer, it would seem a little jaded.... sad.gif

If you like the next gen, then consider the original!! smile.gif

Cheers

The original (ST kirk, spork & gang) had some of the most memorable episodes. Granted production look dated vs the newer STNG & the the rest. It's classic & fun cool2.gif

It would be super if they consider another ST after this cool2.gif

Watch this movie two times.

one wth 2D, one with 3D.
The 3D one...screen too dark. (this is the problem with most 3D movie i guess)

Ok here goes.

Season 1
The neutral zone - Crew finds frozen ppl from the 90's, cue one power and money obessed fella in it, can be replaced with BN politician or crony since their attitude is basically the same.

Season 2
The measure of a man - My personal favourite episode since it talks about an individuals right and what constitute as a "person".

Season 3
The best of both worlds 1&2 - We are introduced to the scariest enemy around, the borg.

Season 4
Brothers - Data goes crazy and takes over the ship.

Clues - A mystery type episode

First contact - What happens if ppl discover an alien is among them?

The nth degree - One underrated crew becomes a "superior" human

Redemption - Klingon uprising with feature the fed and even the romulans, you get to see how data the android becomes captain and get shit from his first officer.

Season 5

Cause and effect - A time loop which the crew try to get out off. Similiar to stargates own time loop episode which i loved.

The inner light - A poignant story involving picard

Time arrow - A backward time travel focusing on data.

Season 6

Chain of command 1&2 - The enterprise change captain after picard is captured and tortured non stop.

The chase - A interesting question about evolution, if you actually believe in it.

Season 7

Thine own self - Data gets amnesia while on a mission.

That scene in the shuttle where Dr. Carol Marcus took off her uniform was not shown. Damn! Have to wait for the Blu ray in Sept. brows.gif

The best film of 2013 thus far. It beats the crap out of "Iron Man 3" in terms of sheer satisfaction and a story that is simple yet when 'inspected', reveals multiple layers of goodies. J.J. Abrams is a master of sheer fun and he has managed to make Star Trek very approachable to anyone (2009's "Star Trek" was incredible).

The thing that stood out the most for me - - the acting + the emotion. I did not expect either one to be the highlight of this film.

The villain is not as intimidating as I thought, because well, you'll understand when you watch the film. Scary, but not the way you would have expected. "Harrison" brings sheer brute force and seems like an unstoppable machine, but plenty of surprises awaits. I am more amazed of his villainous voice more than anything. tongue.gif

The pacing is tremendous. From the opening first few minutes to what seem like a good point to end the film, but then it punches another notch and takes you further. I loved it. More than 2 hours of pure sweetness.

Should I mention about the visual effects? Astonishing.

Should I mention about the sound effects? Amazing.

From the monstrous chases to the epic crashes, from pew pew laser sounds to pulsating sounds, the 'technical' aspect of "Into Darkness" is a real winner.

Nothing much to complain about the film. The 'emotional' aspect definitely got me. Spock / Kirk - - the duo that just makes this film super special.

Plenty of eye candy (Carol Marcus) and of course Uhura. smile.gif Funnyman Simon Pegg also worth mentioning.

Overall, this is one unmissable film for the year. If you loved 2009's "Star Trek", you will absolutely love this one. In terms of which was better, I think it is a real challenge to top the first film. The first film established a lot of fresh new faces of familiar Star Trek characters, and fans really embraced it. The whole 'modernization' of Star Trek in the first film made it feel like a 'one-time' wonder. "Into Darkness" is still amazing, just about 0.5 notch less than the first film. It's still an unmissable film!

9/10

*Spot on choice of hiring J.J. for Episode VII!

Too bad I didn't watch it in 3D. I heard the 3D is tremendously good.

Edit: What the eff was with the cuts? Kinda mad about it... During dialogue scenes too?? mad.gif I mean WTH? I didn't know this was happening... we didn't get to see Alice Eve's goodies but that's understandable...ish. We did see brief Kirk + two gals in bed, oh so that's ok? Now I'm wondering if there were indeed questionable content that the 9-minute preview did not pass censorship last year.

Well I have just finished watching this movie. I have to say, it is entertaining. Dare I say, more entertaining than the first, although that is mostly because the basis of the story is very good to begin with. (The Wrath of Khan)

But that's as far as I will go with this. Entertaining. Full stop. I wouldn't say the story is brilliant nor would I rate it very highly in terms of quality.

I mean, first, there is predictability. I already guessed the villains and most of the key story plots, by the time I found out there were 72 torpedoes. Second, everything in the movie is a plot device and the story flows on contrivances.

Still, I'd have to say this is one of the better pop corn flicks of the year. The women are beautiful and spunky. The special effects are good. The movie is stylish. The acting is convincing. The action is not too packed and not too sparse. As always, JJ Abrams always delivers on the entertainment, if not the substance.

I have one gripe though. WTF is with all those stupid cuts? And done in such an amateur fashion, at that. mad.gif

I have to say that I agree with you on this. The original series was groundbreaking for tackling issues like existentialism as well as morality issues, like whether the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. But it has such a naive innocence to it, owing to the 60s - 70s sensibilities it was made in, it would never survive today's cynical audience.

However, I think even TNG would never survive today's audience, as it was never "fashionable" with the modern audience to begin with. That's why the series all died, by the 2010s. People have shorter attention spans and prefer style over substance. JJ Abrams was roped in for this exact reason. To make star trek fashionable again.
