Announcement from WOTC Pro Shop re: Planeswalker Playmats.

A lot of people msg-ed me on Sunday (and after) re: getting the Planeswalker Playmats, and I am still receiving msgs on it even though it's 2 days after the Pro Tour...

Let me tell you something... this was the hottest-selling item at the venue (next to every component of Faerie decks). It was so hot, that if you wanted to buy, you were restricted to one (so all sorts of tricks like getting different people to buy, re-queueing later, etc. went on). And it still sold out everytime. I got scared of the fierce-looking lady managing the Pro Shop sad.gif

Now, the other important thing is this... I do not have any of these Planeswalker Playmats. WOTC Pro Shop has appointed Hari as sole and exclusive distributor of these playmats* smile.gif Please feel free to PM him, to beg him, seduce him, etc. for these super-lovely playmats.

*Hari's appointment came due to his advance foresight in clearly listing what he wanted, way in advance smile.gif

Noted. I agree, except that we kinda predicted that even if making the finals, we didn't think it could push pass the Merfolk.  We were discussing sideboarding before start of every round.

Funny story!!! Mihara helped Choo with sideboarding before quarterfinals started  smile.gif  Choo played the exact same 76 card deck copy cos he found it from a 17-person box tournament that Mihara won. A SEVENTEEN person tournament for a box of Shadowmoor. Announcers kept harping on this  smile.gif  The 76th card wasn't cut because couldn't find what card should be cut as it would "undermine the foundation of the deck".  But Mihara brought along an edited and updated version of the deck. Choo would've played Mihara's new list if he could  smile.gif   He didn't even change the sideboard. Net-decking rocks!  smile.gif

Choo was looking for Mihara after he won his quarters, but we all couldn't find him - Mihara had lost his quarters match and disappeared and thus, couldn't give tips to Choo for sideboarding the semis.  Btw, Singapore contingent was all faeries except Choo.

Au Yong & I did tell u 2 play GB elves or RG aggro tongue.gif . Just ur a control player. But i agree merfolk is one deck that is heavily underestimated. Though Reveillark doesnt died to it. It has much better matchup against Mefolk then Faeries. Against Faeries, concede game 1 . SB like 10 cards or so ...hope he doesnt have a god hand . win game 2 . Repeat process for game 3.Obviously the gods wanted u to go shopping in Hollywood tongue.gif

PS : In Regards to the Playmats ... ehem.... i will have 1 Spare unit for auction. So start pming me for it. Auction starts at rm65 and above .... Auction will end on 31st May 2008 @ 23:59. The highest bidder will be posted here with the price offer and i will make arrangements for the trade biggrin.gif

Hari / Blade825, I have started directing people to you. Everyone, blade825 is hari - he owns the mat(s), not me - please contact him, no more PMs to me regarding them smile.gif

I just figured out why the Playmat is so hot now. Apart from the artwork, it's not due to be released until 2 July 2008. So, retailers don't have them yet, except for those who bought them from the WOTC Pro Shop at GP Philadelphia and PT Hollywood. Which is why the sales restrictions were in force...

I am sure Hari has a better pic, but this is what it looks like.
It comes in a semi-tube in which the playmat is slotted in (so you can roll your mat up and slot it in for carrying). Much safer than just gulung your regular mat into a bag. There's a notch at the top of this semi-tube holder to allow you to hang the mat - it's for the retailers to hang on the display smile.gif

And whom am I to refuse the gods? smile.gif the shopping's great.... hopefully, Berlin has something like it in terms of great malls & great prices tongue.gif

p.s. newsflash. Choo won't be playing in Berlin despite Top 4-ing PT Hollywood. National Service is in the way...

Yes, blossom-elf was actually on my shortlist. Darn popular and reliable. You can even go first turn elf, 2nd turn thoughtseize + bitterblossom, or 2nd turn thoughtseize + vanquisher, solid threat potential...

but i like control...

on other points - the venue was very nice, plush / expensive hotel surroundings, but i think it's not the best place in the world to have magic. We didn't have the ceiling space of PT KL, GP Bangkok or PT Yokohama. It was more like the ceiling space of GP Singapore tongue.gif They had a lot of subdivided rooms.

Great update. Btw, the listing for the Manawerx GPT is 6 June - that is a Friday. Is that correct? Thought it would've been Sunday? (8 June)

And I like the idea of a Nationals Playtest weekend... nice...

Hey guys, I quit Magic since 4th Ed and now since Toybox (partly my store) is carrying the game, thought it will be a good time to dabble into the game.

I used to play a Black deck, mainly discard and land destruction with cards like Hymm to Tourach, Hypnotic Spectre, Drain Life, Strip Mine etc

Is there soemthing similar now? Or has the game changed entirely that this is no longer viable?

Black has moved out from targeted LD, it's mostly red and sometimes green now. Discard is still around, but not much random discard anymore, it's either you choose, or your opponent choose.

Ahhh I see.. well i think back in those days, Red was the LD colour, Black, well, we had Strip Mine, cant remember what cards we have.. but it was really discard that was the theme.

Well, discard is something I like in any TCG, so that will still be my main choice.

Welcome back smile.gif

Black/red was one of the choices wielded by some pro players at the recent PT too, so don't knock it dead yet... but what it has now are the:
Split second spells that can't be countered - Sudden Death, Sudden Shock, Extirpate
1-drop disruption / long-term threat - Thoughtseize / Greater Gargadon
Cheap removal - Nameless Inversion, Terror
2-drop must-have - Bitterblossom
4-drop mass removal - Damnation
4-drop persist - Murderous Recap (good against decks with 1 and 2 drops)

Well admittedly, 99% of what I have cited above are black cards tongue.gif But you can pair in some good red stuff. You can have lots of burn to pair in with the black.

But your whole deck would need to be updated cos a lot of the old spells are no longer valid for Standard play. And while Hypnotic Specter was great for its time, there are now so many other solid cards... Bitterblossom has climbed past US$20-25 per card and is a must-have creature generator. There are elf decks that slot in that black card just so that they can answer an opposing Bitterblossom.

Just my 2 cents.

well if you are a big control player better dun try palying aggro no matter how good is it...
some how during games the control side of u just kick in and drive u crazy (happens to me a few times lol)...

well merfolk deck has so much synergy especially when u get out a turn 1 curse, turn 2 sygg/ any other merfolk...
it got turn 4 mirror weave and cryptic (the best bout crytic would be the tapping ability for me)...
going merfolk mill would be a bad choice while merfolk aggro would definately be better for me...
was rooting for the merfolk deck all the way lol...

and i too expected merfolk to beat lark but somehow the lark got the right draws and combo at the right time...
with disruption, the merfolk would have won...

btw faeries turn 1 vision turn 2 blossom is really scary from the winning stats lol...

and the planeswalker palymat is just AWESOME!!!
too bad no money T.T

as for black i would strongly suggest going rack/discard...
current meta u wont see much of discard hate (dun remember seeing dodecapods sb anymore for a long time)...
only problem would be the elf liege but playing black with access to removals, its not a problem especially with racks putting on the pressure together with the black kngiht (pro white = eat this liege!!!)...
