Hi all,
just to share our renovation experience.

option 1: 99% of interior designers (ID) will recommend a false ceiling to introduce downlights and covelights.
option 2: In contrast conventional methods includes plastering the ceiling and installing lights direct into the ceiling.

After some objective analysis, we realized that the IDs tend to push for something that they can charge more for.
Not that it is wrong, but the client must make an informed decision.

In summary:
option 1:
adv- trendy, better flat finishing compared to option 2, flexibility of lighting points, hidden electrical cables inside false ceiling.
disadv- loss of head room (false ceiling), potential dust collection spots for cove lights, more expensive option than option 2, some challenge to install ceiling fan (but can be solved),

option2:
opposite as above.

for more details, feel free to take a look here http://hdbrenovation2009.blogspot.sg/2010/...-lightings.html

I had just done my plaster ceiling last week. My hse is double story corner with around 3000 sqft build up. Design is mix of flat/downlight and light box, depend on ceiling shape. 2 suppliers from Lowyat site quoted RM 77XX and RM 55XX each. So much different!!! So please get at least 2 quotes.

Date to complete also big different, one said 2 weeks and another one just need 1 week.

Off course I go with cheaper & faster one:  And he completed it in 2 days!!! All worker are chinese and workmanship is good too. really superman.

Sorry in advanced if this sound like a silly question.

Based on below design (just ignore the downlight in this picture), if the box area where u can see the light through measures about 8ft (length) x 8ft (width), do I have to pay for....

a) 64ft of L-box + 64ft of Light through
b) 32ft of L-box + 32ft of Light through
c) 32ft of L-box OR 64ft of L-box
d) 32ft of Light through OR 64ft of Light through
e) All of the above calculation is incorrect.

Anyone can advise the right answer? Please take note that there is no modification being done at the middle area (we just used the existing ceiling to place the fan.. the touchup/reno only touched on the edges area of the ceiling)

Sry, noob here...

I am having a house with 9 and half feet ceiling height in my living hall. My wiring contractor since wanting to do simple work, has prepared the wiring for plaster ceiling and say that's my only solution. He asked for 6 inches to be lowered. Meaning I am still left with 9 ft
Question: how much height is a standard size takes, and is 9ft with ceiling fan a nice thing, surely I can no longer throw my kids up!

My condo now is 9ft height.
I think not suitable to put fans if below 9ft and the whole house will looks narrow as well.
9 ft from bottom till the top is acceptable, i am 174cm tall, when I hold my hands up, I still have 1 feet tall before touching the center of the fans.
So fans normally takes up bout 1.5 feets

You can always do plaster ceiling only at each corner of the ceiling, so your fans still installed at the height of 9.5 ft.
But regarding the wiring stuff, you should negotiate with contractor right before they start re-wiring all the wires.

that's is exactly what I have in my mind, I will still conceal a layer of plaster ceiling 2" down in middle just to conceal all the wiring then I will use hanging light instead of downlight!

Hi guys! I need your suggestions on plaster ceiling design, as well as contacts of reliable and reasonably priced ceiling + drywall contractor. As you can see below, my unit has a longish open layout living+dining+kitchen. I want to get the soft effects of cove lighting, but I don't want a huge cove ceiling covering the whole space, or double cove ceiling (one over the living area, one over the dining area). I am not planning to install ceiling fans, so there's more flexibility in designing the ceiling and lighting position. Suggestions and contacts are deeply appreciated. Thank you!

Does anyone have idea how to solve this shit?, there is a gap between ceiling fan and the ceiling. Most probably is the mistake done by plaster ceiling guy that install the hook. Full payment is made because my ceiling fan just installed today and found this shit. Dont thing the plaster ceiling guy will come back to fix the thing because his attitude is real sux before payment made. His attitude should be more sux now.
