international style is a movement that is part of modernism that was pretty major movement in the 30s. the modern movement tries to detach itself from the identity or image of any particular culture or people. it tries to communicate with people using a common language: mathematics.
hence why the use of geometrical shapes. and since rectangular shapes are the most efficient, most designs are based around that. it's geometry, something everybody understands. it's an attempt to create an international language. so how far have international style affected malaysia? very, very deep. most buildings in the 50s are based on modernism's international style. heck, if u strip the pitch roof, all schools in malaysia are based on block styles as well. early JKR designs follow this fashion bcoz it's very efficient. u wanna pioneer the international style in malaysia? sure. if u could go back in time |

QUOTE(finger_waverz @ Aug 21 2008, 09:31 PM) can anybody link to a website that show some example of student's architectural work ie:presentation board, rendering, perspective try archinect.com. i'm a student of architecture too and my lecturer suggested this site to us. coz i need some guideline here.... hope it helps! Added on August 22, 2008, 9:23 pm QUOTE(yuexia @ Jul 30 2008, 12:00 PM) nope, they rejected me ur going to HK?! how nice! oh ya, um, can anyone recommend any books for an archi student to read on? besides Form, Space and Order? i don't know whether i should get the books here or in HK...but i've heard that books sold in Malaysia are more expensive than in other countries? is it true? i asked Borders and they say F, S and O costs RM185 including shipment well practically any good book will do. for most of the subjects my lecturer just told us o flip through random books. as for history of architecture, u should try 'history of architecture' by sir banister fletcher. it's as good as complete. but it cost rm200+. 'global history of architecture' by francis d.k. ching is less expensive but may not be as complete as the one by fletcher. This post has been edited by lovelyslickyvixen: Aug 22 2008, 09:24 PM |

QUOTE(azarimy @ Aug 21 2008, 12:11 AM) i'm not aware that OB has a limit for malaysian students. i think that's absurd. they even have discounts for family/siblings of international students/ex-students that want to study there. hey thanks for the info.I have absolutely no idea of this UCAS.Never heard of it until you told me:) Very useful website indeed not too sure about aussie or NZ, buat for admissions to UK school, everything will go through UCAS. they will explain in detail what u have to do to apply. usually they'll conduct interviews, and some may interview by proxy (meaning they'll send representatives to malaysia to interview candidates). even if u cant attend the interview, u can send ur portfolio. they'll instruct specifically where to send it. everything by UCAS. OB seems like a good place to further up my studies...im still considering that place |

Mdf blocks are unholy pain, and the Taman Mayang place is even unholier. Persistent delays and refusal to take responsibility for orders.

Currently, the building analysis assignment is really giving me a very big headache...
I am analyzing the following site & building: (It is a very beautiful work of architecture in my opinion.) ![]() The big problem is, I cannot find enough information about this building & site on the internet. I have to state the design theory of the architect, the design intention of the project, the design concept/idea which drives the project, and the design issue/determinant which was important to the design process. In addition to the above, I would also have to analyze how the ideas and issue have been translated into the architectural forms and spaces of the project. I really like this building & site a lot, but it is very frustrating not to be able to obtain adequate information about it. It would be good if someone in here can link me to resources containing detailed information about this building & site. I would also have to produce diagrams & analytical sketches to show my analysis. It would be great if there are diagrams of the building & site too. (Which I can work on.) Hope you guys can help me out. I already have plenty of photos of the building and site to work on, but not enough information... Regards. Books in Taylor's go out fast, try to find those who have the book, flip through and photocopy.
Scan the diagrams and start work on em. For the A3 panel assignment, the diagrams are your priority. |

I would then have to place my analysis of the two buildings onto two A3 panels like in the following example from other students; ![]() One good thing was, this assignment taught me how to use Photoshop. QUOTE well, i can say that there are lots of books about tadao ando and his buildings. u gotta stop going through information on the net and start going to the library wink.gif. Yeah, I would have to try my best to look for books about Tadao Ando and his Awaji Yumebutai project in Taylor's crowded library. QUOTE Books in Taylor's go out fast, try to find those who have the book, flip through and photocopy. Scan the diagrams and start work on em. For the A3 panel assignment, the diagrams are your priority. I agree that the books at Taylors go out very quickly. Students usually borrow entire stack of books... I am still looking/waiting for the book: Ecological Architecture - A Critical History by James Steele; which I saw only recently at the library. I am also on the look out for a book entitled New Glass Houses; which I saw someone borrowed a few weeks ago...(Often, I am just one step too slow...) There was once, I saw an interesting book about glass architecture and took a flip through it..., I thought I would come back to the book later on to borrow it, while I took a look at the other books...; well, as I went back to the book about five minutes later, a guy was already in that section fumbling around...Suddenly, he took THAT book with him and Chao ed! Bottom line is, looking for books at Taylor's library depends on luck... EDIT: Happy 51 years MEDEKA to all BTW. This post has been edited by Benjamin911: Aug 31 2008, 12:59 AM |

Thats why I said focus on the diagrams. My comments from Ms.V were that I could have done the diagrams better.
