Although the exam questions are long and the time relatively short, I believe they are looking for a balance between accuracy and speed of response. It always seems like a strategy to me where you attempt to get the accuracy as high as possible for higher-weighted questions and speed through the lower-weighted ones. There are many times I didn't manage to finish the paper, but I didn't screw up the exams either despite not completing all questions in the paper. As long as you have at done at least 80% correctly, you should be better off than writing BS responses for half the paper and completing it on time.
*
I had this 2 hour paper with 120 marks total last semester meaning that each minute is worth 1 mark. We were required to write 1 long essay and 6 short essays.

I spent my time answering the long essay first and then the 6 essays based on which one I have more facts. My last 4 essays were of very bad handwriting and 3 of them were a lot of BS....I mean, what can you write when the question is something along the lines of "describe the categories of coping with stress."

But, I guess BSing works sometimes since I still passed and got a fairly decent grade. laugh.gif

I'm not sure how its like for you in engineering, but the bulk of the papers we had in Comp Sci mainly requires only around 1.5 hours to finish off, despite the 3 hour timeline (except for those that requires a lot of writing).

The 1st hour more or less determines the passing point. Should a person not be able to get to the passing point by the 1st hour, then chances of failure is extremely high. The other 30 minutes is just to fill in the rest of the stuff that's skipped in the 1st hour.

I'll tell you the truth, i personally felt given enough time 90 would have been easy for my Telecommunications Principles exam, it's not like i didn't know all the answers, my hand just got too tired to keep up. All the questions came out as generally long winded essays, managed only an A instead of a HD. No time to check, even until the last minute i was rushing my ass off.

First thing our lec said before the exams was "you're now given 2 hours folks, it'll be interesting to see how you fare this year"

They also chucked out the supplementary exams for students who failed the finals but got more than 80 in their assignments cry.gif

QUOTE(USQStudent08 @ Aug 5 2008, 10:47 PM)
The engineering exams at USQ have about 4-5 main questions with each broken down into a few subsections.
Imagine you have to give short essays for each sub question(lots of writing to be done).

Assuming that you have 4 questions, how much time do you get with each question? 1/2 hour?
Split that with another 4 subsections, you get about 7-8 minutes to write short answers for each.Hardly you'll have anytime to think carefully..

Especially those 3rd-final year subjects, I've seen many who got tensed up towards the last 15 minutes struggling to complete what they want to write.

2 hours you can barely have time to check through your answers.I had a few subjects during my time which needed 3 yet I still couldn't complete them in time.

What course you taking lol?

Ahh... those types. Yeah, I know how its like. We've got those types of papers as well, just that its not the majority among those we need to take. Most of the papers in Comp Sci are the russian roulette types, where like I mentioned, its either you do reasonably well or you flunk miserably. Come to think of it, this pretty much describes anything related to discrete maths.

I guess its still allowable if you've really made a huge mess out of your time table to the point that there's totally nothing else for you to take at all in a particular semester, and the rest of what you need is only offered in the next.

Yeah. Most of the times they're crap boring.

But i've learnt one thing well here. The lecturers are human too. Turning up at the end of the sem without coming to classes and then expecting the lec to give you tips isn't going to make you buddies. If i'm lazy, the least i do is email the lec and tell him i can't come to a few lecs and tuts on so and so week due to "insert excuse here". They appreciate it, trust me.

Even stuff like christmas cards and simple greetings matter alot. My friend gave this chinese lecturer a CNY card once and the lec remembered it, a year later offered him a research position. End point is that they're humans too.

Don't come to my classes and i'll make sure i'm doubly anal when i mark your papers.
