I find the lecturers are really good.

I choose UNSW cause it's cheaper compare to Melbourne.

Since Melbourne's program is called common engineering, I presume you will have to select a major by the end of your 1st year. It should be similar to UNSW's Flexible First Year program which was the first of its kind to offer a common Engineering stream for first years.

Engineering is a large discipline and has many specialisations. You must know what you're interested in as specialisation is necessary and it is usually not possible to switch majors as the degree is very specialised.

In Sydney, UNSW is undoubtedly the best university for Engineering, with strong industry links and above average salaries for graduates in the industry (this depends on the individual of course as graduating from a good university doesn't mean a thing if you have failed to possess employable-traits). In Melbourne, Melbourne university would be the most popular choice and should have the strongest reputation there. Overall, I believe UNSW is a better university at technical training than Melbourne, hence graduates gain a slight advantage in terms of being more industry-relevant.

Also, do not bank your chances on a PR this early as job demands may change according to the state of the economy, so this cannot be guaranteed no matter which university you go to.

The difference is only approximately less than A$3000 as UNSW has also increased its fees. All you guys on a scholarship, does your award increase proportionally to the increase in tuition fees?

I calculated the total fees and living cost for UNSW and Melb Uni.

Melb Uni cost a lot more in the end, compare to UNSW.

Anyway,UNSW is a nice place to study. It's just too hectic for me.Still not used to the 12 weeks and endless test system.

Yup, all unis here have the same thing... 12 weeks + all the exams, but some subjects have mid-sems as well so don't know if u like that or not XD

Anyway, I'm 1st year Melb Uni Environments here & 2nd year in Melbourne smile.gif
It's a great place to study and I'm enjoying everyday over here biggrin.gif

Cost of living and Melb uni fees are undoubtly very expensive.

Engineering in Melbourne is good, and if you can get in this year it's even better. Because with the Melbourne Model you'll have to take Bachelor of Environments to do engineering - i think it's great because I get to learn multidisciplinary stuff but if you don't think it's relevant then u better don't do it or you'll be suffering, + it'll be more difficult and expensive to get into Masters of Engineering afterwards. This is the last year Melb Uni's offering Engineering directly so what can I say - treasure it if you will...

But UNSW is great too - try checking out the course structure and subjects you'll be doing in both unis - go with what appeals to you more.

Another thing, off-topic: for all the lovely peeps in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide & Brisbane - as part of EndChildSlavery campaign, there's going to be Global Night Shift - a massive youth rally/concert/street party on the 16th of May, tickets will be on sale from ticketmaster for $20 and all profits will go to Oaktree Foundation's education & development projects in India smile.gif It'll be awesome so bring your friends and go if you can!!!

This campaign also show Australia and the rest of the world of an attitude shift in us young people - standing up against child slavery - it will be held simultaneously across the 6 major cities in Australia - and it will attract huge media attention and will pressure the major corps to be transparent, ethical in their trading with 3rd world countries and not to exploit them!

For us lucky Melbourne people, we have the event held at wonderful Docklands this year biggrin.gif so come come!! There will be great Australian artistes performing and it'll be a great experience for all smile.gif

I've got one question.
In UNSW, usually people take 24 Units of Credits per semester right?
Does that mean we have to study 24 hours per week?
Just to confirm that smile.gif

Lol, the "number of hours of study per week" is a persistent joke among students. Every course outline states that you have to spend at least 10 hours per week studying beyond lectures and tutorials. With an average of 4-5 courses per session, that amounts to approximately 40-50 hours of studying per week.
