i studied cello for 3 months under an ex-mpo musician, and probably learned more in technique and tone than i've learnt in 4 years of local teaching. biggrin.gif

having said that, mpo musicians are not extreme maestros, its just that their level of playing is far superior to even the best malaysia has to offer. my ex-teacher is actually having a hard time finding a place as a cellist even in a local city orchestra back in his country Germany now (he was the principal cellist for the mpo a couple of years back). such is the standard in europe.

plus, the salaries they receive from playing under petronas is obscene in comparison with other western countries. high competition lol biggrin.gif

grade 8 or what is not important. I've seen many violin/piano diploma holders play like hopeless idiots without the book. They are so dependant on the book that they became instant retards without any book.

Each time someone tells me they have grade 8 or higher, I make them play something without book. Sure they will behave like retards!.Hahaha...
*
i can play a piece apon hearing twice.
first time is for the chords.
second time is for the notes.

just because ppl u know are retard, doesnt mean that all grade 8 musicians are stupid.
Is a matter of whether how much they learn from the outside, and not in the classroom. i play piano, but i still play with a small chamber music group and we were featured in the star. all our peices didnt use paper, so im a retard??
I play the lead guitarist in my band, and i dont use a book, so im a retard too??
I play normal songs without book, hearing by ear, and improvising on chords and melody, but i didnt use a book, so im a retard??

so i guess those who learn by themselves are the greatest musician?

such poor mentality u have there.

From what I heard, there isn't much people interested in violin.. Piano is more likely a first choice. How come a lot of people wants to tutor in violin?

usually ppl start learning piano first, then afterwards they might consider a second instrument, the second instrument they choose mostly tends to be violin wink.gif
noobcake, does your teacher teach violin?how much he's charging you now?

How long does it take to reach grade 8? Eight years? But if you have piano base, you can jump a few grades right? From what I heard....

MPO musicians are world class, that's for sure. Funny thing is...there are many arrogant Malaysian violinists, Cellists, Pianists etc who think they themselves are very good. LOL!

I know one world class MPO violinist personally. He makes all the best local violinists sound like kids. The best Malaysian Violinists whom I perform professionally with all were dumbfounded and almost speechless after he played in front of them unaccompanied. It was funny indeed to see their facial reaction in disbelief. After that encounter, a few of them were rather depressed...and had to accept that though they are among malaysia's best violinists...their standard is not anywhere close at all to him.

Sigh....such is the standard of world class musicians. The best of Malaysian orchestra musicians are still lagging so many light years away...which is sad.

icyhawkes...I always tell people that the arrogant ones will never learn or improve! The humble ones however will learn and improve cos they dont have fat egos to feed...and are willing to ask those better than them to teach.

I always ask my mpo friend to give me tips on violin playing...cos 5 minutes from him is better than 5 hours from local teachers.

its true...i'm not sure if violin works the same as guitar, but my brazilian friends omg, seriously great guitar players...the juz need to show me and guide me for a while then i can play properly...i feel that this way is better than going to lessons...thats why private tutor cost more sweat.gif last time my teacher used to tutor me violin, but she opened her own center already...

So in conclusion, private tutors are better than tutors from music centers?

Ya when I asked her if she is doing theory with me, she said no need for theory, but if I wanted then I can buy my own book and do it, and ask her questions if I don't understand...
I can understand her also..Since I only have limited time with her per lessons.
Haha.. Oh yeah I can ask paramore to teach me. ^^ But I need to clarify with my teacher which board I'm doing?

empire: I used to critic higher grade musician to play without any paper or book. It is a 50/50 thing, some of them are really retard. But the ones who can read well do have pros in them, they will be freaking good playing in an orchestra or preparing last minute performances. For those who are slow readers, they play more expressive than anyone else. That is my experience but it only apply to most musician.

Since this subject is mention, so you guys should understand that a good music teacher does not require a certification. Skill and knowledge matters the most.

paramore...so many piano teachers struggle to play even 'Happy birthday to you' without making mistakes. Why? cos their excuse is that they dont have the score for this simple song! LOL!

Theory is theory...but people are not gonna hire you to perform if your theory is super strong but your playing is nowhere near your super theory.
