i am so sorry to hear the unluck news..may bam bam rest in peace,, sad.gif

btw talking about vet doc specialized in rabbit, i remember a thing happen to me..
one morning one of my bunny just lying on cage floor...when i checked, its back leg seems to be injured..but i dont know by what...when i put it on grond, it only can crawled with its hind leg..although it eating appetites still going well, quickly i bring him to pejabat perkhidmatan haiwan, the nearest vet in my place(bcoz now living in village already)..

i have to ride a bus to the town..then from bus station walk quite far to the vet place...when i arrive there..the doctor i always meet not there..only an assistant of doc ..(i dont know his status..but not looks like doc..so may be assistant)

when he saw i bring rabbit, first thing he said: " oh arnab...payah sikit lah..x ramai bwk arnab sini..tahun ini ini kali pertama.."(he's lying,i remember i bring my rabbit there only a week before )
then he said there's no medicine for my bunnies..bla bla bla..he ask me to urut the bunny with oil myself at home..or the last choice he said to me..semelih saja..dagingnya sedap jugak..

although i am really mad that time...i just thank that person and left the place...my heart said: all my tiredness end with this??
so i make intention to go to kl as soon as possible to treat my bunny..
but then the next morning..a miracle happen..i saw my bunny hopping happily in its cage..like its leg never injured..thanks to God..it still live until today..

ok another curious question which i have already tried googling it but didn't really get my answers...

should i neuter/spay both male and female or is it okay to perform on one of them only?

just curious what will the outcome be if we have these combinations:

neutered male + normal female
normal male + spayed female

@kembara, yea... it's sad to hear this kinda negative feedback from people... I used to call some vet near my place and they told me why rabbit also need to go vet ka? they don't live long wan la... 2 years or so la... I was like... sweat.gif there are not many vet that can handle all kind of pets, mostly they would go for the major ones like cats and dogs... =/

@sissonne, is a very simple formula that you can work on yourself... if one of them are neutered/spayed them you won't have any kits and they can live together in a same cage... the only thing is when one of them that is not neutered/spayed then you will experience some event like spraying, aggressive behaviour and etc during their mature age...

you can read the benefits of neuter/spay at the first page... you don't have to do both at the same time... you can neuter the buck at around 6 months onwards and spay the doe later at around 9 months onwards... this way you can concentrate taking care one of them after their sugery instead of two...

Kembara I has a few similiar experience before although its not as bad in KL. Some of my friends cant belive I bring rabbit to vet either. Sometimes the other customer at the ve also remark on my rabbits.

sissonne

neutered male + normal female
normal male + spayed female

both means no babies, but either party can be more dominent over each other and cause fighting. FYI spaying a female reduces her risk of ovarian cancer, but the procedure is more risky and a bit more expensive than neutering a male.

hehe... everytime I bring Kimi to visit vet, I can see heads will turn as I walked in... most of them are dog owners, so I look peculiar to them... laugh.gif

but normally I tried to be the 1st customer as I don't want to stress Kimi waiting in the long queues of cats and dogs... smile.gif

I think Stalkie and jaswwp already got the answer for that spot on. Neutering has more benefits than just to avoid pregnancy. It's also to subdue their territorial behaviour, which believe me can get uncontrollable, when being with another rabbit. i remember reading about this at one of the websites, sorry couldnt furnish u the url as i dont remember it and im at work right now. The website highly discourage keeping 2 un-neutered bunnies in the same cage (including your 2 examples above), so much as to say its impossible. Ofcoz as stated on the main page, neutering helps with health issues later on too.

I'm happy with Pebbles now. One day after neutering i realise he tend to eat more hay. He's actually more energetic( i dont know how this is possible, but its true). He has also made my couch his new favourite resting spot (last time he only jump on and off). He also somehow becomes closer to you, i mean follow where ever u go and actually do respond to his name?? Ok, i dont think he recognise his name, but he respond to you calling him over. wink.gif

Overall (ok this may be my imagination), i think he's happier and less snappy and aggressive. However he still chew on wire (BUGGER!!!) though, and just put my internet connection at home off line last nite. doh.gif

Well, conclusion, no regrets on my part for neutering rabbits and would highly recommend to others. Ofcoz at your own risks la. icon_rolleyes.gif

Added on January 18, 2008, 10:50 amDo you guys think that the reason most vets have no experience with rabbits is because well, much less fewer take their rabbits there for checkups? No chance to practise = no experience. And rabbits being zoo animal, their behaviour and health care are diffirent from domestic animals(cats, dogs,). They also dont cost that much to purchase and i guess most owners(im just guessing here) couldnt give a damn about paying for their exorbitant medical bills. Hilang satu beli lagi!

And since most ppl do not know of forums on the internet such as this to provide and share information, most ppl would just give up when their first or second rabbit fall sick and die. Personally im glad i found this thread. Good job guys!

The assistant is a d*ckH*ad. I wonder if the jabatan haiwan got anything to do with WWF, coz the amount of donation they get from public, they could atleast make sure qualified ppl are hired. Asking ppl to eat their pets is like so WTF.

a rabbit will be perfectly happy on its own, as long as you give it enough attention

depends on your space and your ability... 2 rabbits not just increase the responsibilities but also the cost of maintenance too... smile.gif

Kimi is alone and he's doing fine... even though I wanted 2 but my space does not allow me to...

I know male and female, once they reached to their maturity age, then they'll start behaving aggresively, etc etc ..

but what if they are of the same siblings ? .. will they still fight ? .. same cage from small till big ..

what are the possibility that male siblings fighting with =,= male dad ? ..

or they actually ignore all the Parents / Children relationship after reaching maturity age.

hmm..

my gf father got a pair of rabbit running around freely at thier backyard.

not much attention other then food and water, ill go there ocasionaly to 'sayang' them abit.

i notice most of the time i open the back door they will hop over if they notice. there is some cactus at the back which i think is chew up by them, will tht harm them?

there is once i saw the female chewing on broom, and it is plastic, i quickly pick her up and take away the broom

Sounds like my rabbits too. They're in my hometown in Penang now, my father takes care of them most of the time. They run freely in the backyard, not much attention except once in a while go and sayang them, stroke stroke, hug and all. And they like to sneak into the house to steal the veggies that my mom put on the floor to dry before packaging into the fridge too! biggrin.gif

As for chewing cactus, my rabbits tried that before. It stopped trying to chew cactus after it got pricked by a sharp-needled cactus once.

Then again, my bf's rabbits chewed (and crunched) on the plastic beads on my tshirt once! doh.gif

@Biscuit, they are not like human... they don't think that way... any how there will be one to lead, one that want to be alpha in the cage... is their instinct...
