Guys, If i buy a girl partner for my rabbit(a girl) can? I just it in the cage?
*
If they have not been living in the same cage together since young there's a chance they may fight really bad and you might have to get a second cage.

My two rabbits (both females) have been living together since birth but as they grew up they started fighting until one day the more aggressive one bit the more timid bunny until got bleeding... about the size of 2 50-sen coins. they started fighting and biting each other here and there a little bit but it was usually under control. i'd wanted to get a second cage but dallied in getting it cos they were mostly ok. mana tau... suddenly one day i woke up and saw my poor bunny bleeding and in pain and i was stunned. she recovered fine but that morning itself i went out and got a second cage immediately already.

had to apply a cream on the wound until it healed and feed my bunny some antibiotics, man i tell you the feeding the medicine was the hardest part. at first my vet gave me tablets, my rabbit refused to eat it. i stuff it into a carrot, she spit it out. then got the liquid based antibiotic, had to force it down her throat, otherwise she spit it also. thank goodness after 1 week she recovered fine. i never put them together after that (not even play together in the garden), but after a few years as they got older they got along fine and became good friends. now they sleep with each other also don't fight anymore.

So... beware. Bonding can take a short while... or a few years in my case.

All the best smile.gif

And get the second cage!

hmm..

my gf father got a pair of rabbit running around freely at thier backyard.

not much attention other then food and water, ill go there ocasionaly to 'sayang' them abit.

i notice most of the time i open the back door they will hop over if they notice. there is some cactus at the back which i think is chew up by them, will tht harm them?

there is once i saw the female chewing on broom, and it is plastic, i quickly pick her up and take away the broom
*
Sounds like my rabbits too. They're in my hometown in Penang now, my father takes care of them most of the time. They run freely in the backyard, not much attention except once in a while go and sayang them, stroke stroke, hug and all. And they like to sneak into the house to steal the veggies that my mom put on the floor to dry before packaging into the fridge too! biggrin.gif

As for chewing cactus, my rabbits tried that before. It stopped trying to chew cactus after it got pricked by a sharp-needled cactus once.

Then again, my bf's rabbits chewed (and crunched) on the plastic beads on my tshirt once! doh.gif

HAHAHAHAHAHA...

rabbits are intriguing creatures. Every corner you turn there is a surprise. That is why they live in burrows....networks of tunnel under the ground....

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA....

oh yes...

you should see the stuff my rabbits do in my garden...burrow underneath to eat the roots of their favourite veggie which my mom planted and wanted to harvest for herself and barricaded it away from my rabbits.

over the last 8 years my family and i have learnt this one precious lesson... "you can never ever ever outsmart rabbits..."

A possibility is that another rabbit bit that rabbit in that spot and the wound just healed.

One of my rabbits when they were much younger, bit my other rabbit before till it bled. After the wound heals there will be a bald spot for a while before the fur starts growing back. I recall having to apply some kinda cream on the wound, and then the bald spot back then.

Ask the shop/person you bought it from what happened, and maybe take to vet for the vet to inspect.

nicoty_yne,

Sorry to hear about your bunny. General rule is, don't simply feed your rabbits anything that they like. And sometimes you just have no choice but to force feed them good food. And get them to eat hay/grass.

I'd like to share my experience... maybe it might help some others, or if there's something wrong I've been doing all these years I can learn from others too.

I have been keeping a pair of rabbits since 2001. That's about 7++ years already. Both of them are still alive today. Their lifespan is supposed to be about 12-15 years so they're 3/4 there already and still going strong. I feed my rabbits normal pellets (local pellet, non branded), and my mom would give them veggies if she has leftovers (uncooked of course!). My father buys them imported Australian carrots and gives them a few slices from time to time (a bit overkill actually but he does it anyway tongue.gif ) and ocassionally they get fruit peels for fruits that they can eat.

Apart from that they much daily on the grass at home (the grass planted in my house is the good quality needle grass type, similar to short hay), and the rest, they roam around the veggie patch at home and eat all the leaves that they like. If there are plants that the rabbit is not supposed to eat, it'll be in a different garden (there's a separator between the two types of gardens in my house). My rabbits are let out into the garden first thing in the morning when my father wakes up, and they've been conditioned to return back to their cage by evening. So they get to play the whole day in the garden (my mom calls it destroying the garden cos they like to bury underground and dig out all her veggie out of the soil), and they're happy. My bunnies also understand me and vice versa.

Proper diet + happy bunny = Healthy bunny

Hope my experience helps...

Hey guys, quick question, anyone here has dealt with old age health issues with rabbits before?

My 9 year old rabbit is walking... funny... and toppling. I think it got inner ear infection or stroke (worst case scenario). My dad's taking it to the vet tomorrow but would appreciate hearing from anyone who's kept bunnies up to that age.

djspinnet,

Sorry to hear. Haven't encounter toppling problem before. My old bunnies normally died peacefully. Hope you find a remedy to it and may your rabbit live many more years.
*
I do hope its not a stroke... but the toppling symptom was sudden. And it can't walk straight. Kinda like a drunk bunny :

A very mild stroke could be a suspect cause. Let's see what the vet says lah.

Live many more years? It's already 9 years old... at most its probably got a couple more years to go... sad.gif

QUOTE(sangterap @ May 14 2008, 08:45 AM)
Do you mean the hind legs showing some signs of paralysis? Did it hurt its backbone? Sometimes when a rabbit kick too hard, they may get back injuries. Because your rabbit is consider senior citizen maybe its bone already weaken.

Losing balance may be ear infection also. Better get vet's opinion.
*
Can't hop in a straight line and sometimes it'll fall over on its side. Not sure if that is caused by a balance problem or toppling cos of semi-paralysis on one side. My bunny is not with me here, it's in Penang being cared for by my father who's doing a great job. He's taking it to the vet today.

Hurt their bones... possible, considering that particularly bunny likes to do high jumps to get over the net barricade and jump into the house to steal my mom's fresh veggies from the kitchen. But while injuries may cause it not to hop in a straight line I don't think it would have caused the toppling. Toppling is more of a imbalance problem... perhaps inner ear infection, or paralysis (stroke).

DJSPINNET, ur father is in Penang? Can i know which vet he always visit when ur bunny get sick? 9 years old bunny huh? I also pray that all my bunnies will stay healthy and happy until that age... tongue.gif
*
No idea, my bunnies have never gotten sick before all these years. This is the first time. And today my father reported that my bunny appears to be alright. So he's gonna monitor her closely further to see how she develops over the next few days... and take her to the vet if she has a "relapse" or doesn't improve.

My gosh. And I thought I was bad enough when I bathed my bunny with a water hose to clean their mud-soaked butt and paws.

Yeah, but you don't have to exactly dunk her into a pail of water... its easier to just use a hose or a wet cloth...

My rabbit still seems fine till today.... dunno what happened the other day. Since that flopping over the other day it's been happily hopping around like normal, like nothing ever happened. Weird.

Then again its an elderly bunny probably nearing its end of life... at her age the best is just to keep her contented I suppose.

Time to make another trip back to Penang whenever time allows me to play with them before they start .... going... sad.gif
