@antaeusguy,

In any career development, you surely doesn't want to stay doing the same thing over and over again .. but there are some that are happy to do it. That is why, I believe when you're 5-6 years down your career line, you may want to decide which way you want to go. There surely nothing much different from SAP manager versus other kind of manager .. you need to have those mentioned skills which you could gain while doing your current job. Depending on your luck, you could go faster than the rest .. or you could go slower .. going up step by step.

If I were hiring a manager in my company, I'll surely choose one from within. One that knows ins-and-outs of what the company is doing and the system supporting the company. But there is always a second option, choosing one from outside who've much better knowledge in the field and better skillsets.

To get head hunted, you need to make yourself known to them. One way is to activate your CV/resume on job sites. Networking is the other way to be known .. get your ass off your chair and walk around.. attend seminars, product launches, courses etc related to your field.

For me, I don't really like to be head hunted, I would rather go and applying the job myself though this could be a bit tough unless you known someone in the company before hand.

Anyhow .. good luck..

Just wanna ask you guys, which SAP site/forum do you guys visit the most for work issue/advice?

What I encounter is that when someone post a configuration issue on the board, many people replied and I found some of the replies to be not true/misleading. A few replies are true & the correct way to solve the issue, but it takes experience and good judgement to know which is non-sense and which is useful.

I once asked a SAP consultant how did she learn up to solve configuration issue, and she told me she visited SAP boards and searched for someone who encountered a similiar issue to hers. Or she would post her issue and hope for someone who could help her.

She says she asked colleagues for help but they were not willing to help her.. I think that probably ppl do not want to share their SAP knowledge & experience openly, because this might indirectly "decreases" their value in the market (as the knowledge & experience is not scarce that much anymore - hence more ppl know how to solve it).

Do you guys approach SAP sites/forums to look for advice for work issue?

@antaeusguy,

I was a fan of sapfans.com until when there were some irresponsible posters who posted their specs. and asking for people to help them. I stopped frequenting the site eventhough, I do from time to time, participate in the discussion.

I hardly go to sap's sdn .. too many junks, cut & paste suggestions in there. What they're interested is to get as many points as they can w/o really reading the problem and giving the probable solution to the original problem. The best is still Uncle Google .. I could search and most of the time, it went to either sapfans or sdn anyway smile.gif

So what do I suggest? Register to both, sdn and sapfans .. and don't expect to be spoon-fed smile.gif

Thanks wiraone for the advice smile.gif

I find that forum is a great way to learn SAP esp. when I encounter an issue, I googled it and lead to the SAP forums. I did learned something out of the forums, although it's not 100% perfect answers and need to skim through the threads.

sdn is a b1tch. it's not entirely reliable as how a lot of SAP consultants would expect it to be. but it's not a pain to register to it and maybe you'd be lucky searching for the right threads.

if you have access to SAP Notes and you know how to search for the right thing, it can help alot.

a few years back in my former employer, i had an access to the whole repository of all customer raised OSS messages to SAP globally (CSS if some are you are familiar with it). beats the crap out of sdn, sapfans or any free for all SAP forums in the net in terms of RELIABILITY. well i was with the third party of SAP AGS, so i had access to it and i process some of the OSS messages before myself. if you guys have access to CSS, make the most out of it smile.gif

shocking.gif Posting specs??? That is like asking other consultants to do the config while they themselves get paid. It's quite unethical to do so.. It's like back in University, they would ask someone else to do their assignments while they themselves get's the degree/PhD.

My situation

I am a fresh graduate, and undertake sap sd e-learning sponsored by MDEC Malaysia. Completed the training last week. The sponsor only covers the training expenses, not the SAP certification exam( RM1.8k ).

Dilemma:

Should i go for SAP certification in few weeks time?? base on talk to few people, SAP certification exam not easy. So i need to study really hard for the exam. Don't want to delay very long, so if i choose to take the exam, i planned to take it on 16th July( one of the SAP Malaysia's examination date for July). Than look for SAP related job after the completing the exam. RISK, its not guarantee i will past the exam.

OR

Get into a job first any IT job(related to my degree), than study and sit for SAP certification exam while going for work. BUT afraid, i cannot give enough commitment. New job, so need to learn about the job it self. Than SEMANGAT SAP will start to fate.

NEED advice please,

what's PMS? never heard of it in SAP environment. if you only have a single customer OSS access (those S users), definitely you don't get access to OSS database. the one i am telling about is a germany based Solman system (sid: CSS), which basically works as a global ticketing system. there you can see all tickets raised to SAP AGS. of course you need to be from SAP or at least from a third party to have access. haven't heard any companies from malaysia that is a third party of SAP. we have at least two here in the philippines.

of course smile.gif SAP is fully customizable for every type of customer and its needs even if you integrate multiple third party softwares in it.

i am not sure if we work in the same context as here in manila, but i would advise you to get an SAP SD consultant job first before you aim for the certification. well, certification for junior level here in manila isn't a big deal.

and i've taken the SAP certification (for Basis) when i was freshly trained from SAP academy (free package from the academy). didn't pass the freakin' exam because that was definitely hard for a newly trained (i lacked around 10 points out of 100 to pass). now, i have been a Basis consultant for 4 years already. not certified, but definitely if i take the exam now, i will definitely pass it. but no rush for the certification for me.

As for me, you'd better go for the certification first. After you already start working,
you just dont have time to sit for the course. Working hour in consulting is crazy, normally we work for 9 hours a day and up to 14 hours once in a while maybe 2,3 times in a month. To sit for the course it takes a month for full time and 3 months for part time if im not mistaken, where got time to study. Unless you work in end user company working in fixed hours then should be ok i think.

If let say your already have experience and want to sit only for the exam, u need to send ur resume for vetting to SAP Malaysia, they will revert back whether you are qualified to sit for the exam or not. And bear in mind not everybody can simply sit for the exam even if you have 5,6 years exp and above.

So while you still young, you have the chance and the money, always get certified first.
I also thinking to get certified in BI but just dont have time do it.
