Even though launched as a "New year" promotion gift by DviCo, the Blu-ray functions in the current top models M-6500 and M-7000 are not very clear. While the 'gift" was based on a limited amount of beta users, additional limitations are enforced for the support of Blu-ray backups up to 100 different titles. While we missed that part in the release notes, they have been communicated initially. So what about the plans of DViCo to bring BD backup support into the units as part of the firmware? We have the scoop... although we not assure you are going to like it... Click on "read more" for the full story.
Based on the limitation of 100 titles and wrapped up as a gift for a limited beta group, DViCo triggered quite some attention to their solution to support BD backups with the ability to load audio and subtitles. This covers what most of the consumers need anyway as not everyone demands full menu support and frankly, DViCo could not make this work anyway due to limitations of memory however... Launching this with limitations obviously has a second agenda introducing the BD status. People getting used to it might acquire a load of titles exceeding 100 and then need to upgrade to the BD firmware if ever released at a certain cost.
On our question rather there are new plans for BD playback, DViCo stated it is still planning to make it a paid firmware update service but at the same time it seems unclear if DViCo is not concentrating around BD for the future players or if the module will eventually be released on the current top models. introduced at IFA 2008 in Berlin last September one would imagine the add on was already available. We thus suspect licensing is not 100% completed so far although DVICo is listed with a license for PC use... Would the M-6500 / 7000 fall under this category or is there some discussion in the background concerning releasing BD support?
Before we left to CES, we expected some nice guy would in the mean time have uploaded the firmware into one of those file sharing sites and indeed, it did not take so long enabling people to enjoy BD backups outside the limited beta group. Things remain rather shady surrounding DViCo's plans and we can only guess where all this will lead to. Will the new FW add-on implement more and newer features besides BD playback? Will these updates without BD be available to the public or is DViCo shifting towards paid updates for their units in general? What will the charge be of this firmware? How much support should we expect on BD playback in matters of bugs and errors? Will future BD updates be provided or will we have to pay for it again every time a new version is launched? Is there still work in progress on the M-4100/5100 units?
Ok, STOP! I'm getting a headache...
The new year started well for DViCo launching the beta with BD which many of you like and enjoy at this moment. Others consider it a poor attempt as it does not resolve any outstanding issues and missing functionality and we at MPC simply say, it's a good start but we still not like to pay for the BD add-on considering the players are sold far above their value compared to the competition and this one good deed will not carry DVICo thru 2009... There's got to be a lot more coming than a paid BD add-on...
Right?
Enjoy
Hi-Jack
