guys, this whole IQ thing between the ati and nvidia is getting too much. seriously. i think plenty of links have been posted and opinions given. let people make their own judgements please?!?? lets move on! this thread is about the 3870 and 3850. what we really need now are ppl with these cards showing us what both cards are really made of!!

on a side note, i took some benchmarks from tomshardware and anandtech and made a scoop of the cards on my site (see sig below). didnt take all the benchmarks just the newer games and added my own input. feel free to leave your own comments smile.gif

actually it is ok for ppl to discuss. haha...as long as dont sway too much from the topic. because when one considering buying a new GFX (like me), would like to know more about the card, performance wise, graphical wise. since both the competitive cards price range is kinda close, so extra advantages *might* be taken into consideration.

it is good to learn some stuff along the way. laugh.gif

i know! all i'm saying is there has been quite elaborate discussion on it to the point that its already straying from the topic. ppl are quoting others over and over and "i told you so" attitude. i didnt check this thread since yesterday and till now i found like only a few posts that are useful in considering whether or not to buy either the 3850 and 3870. other than that its flaming more or less..

but yes ppl are entitled to their views smile.gif
anyways, any updates on the cheapest price for both cards either in bulk or @ lowyat?

Been waiting for a review of HIS' HD3870 cards. Here's an interesting excerpt from Hardware Canucks (Canadian).

QUOTE
Considering the core is already pushed to 777Mhz while the memory is operating at 2252Mhz (DDR) I wasn't expecting much in the way of an overclock. I was wrong.

Overclock speeds

Core: 860Mhz
Memory: 2748Mhz

Using the Catalyst overclocking utility I was able to push this card far beyond what I thought I would be able to. While an overclock of 83Mhz on the core is nothing to write home about, it was the 496Mhz overclock on the memory that left me staring in awe at the screen.

Seems to be overlocked with stock heatsink...and guess what? They label HIS to have a lousy heatsink...wonder how it'll perform with the DuOrb. Best to read the whole article. Seems like there's a Crossfire problem under Vista 64bit. Currently, HIS HD3870 is available at PC-Zone for RM895. Don't know about bulk though...

Added on December 6, 2007, 3:52 amThe power of GDDR4...NVIDIA is still stuck with GDDR3. Wonder what happens if they changed to GDDR4...and AMD.ATI to GDDR5.

only in 3dmarks it seems
but in prey, lost planet <- games that favour nvidia, it can only catch up with 8800gt but not 8800gtx

well good enough for me dont forget its cheaper than 880gt icon_rolleyes.gif i can see myself getting this card in the future and amd is going to cut price see this card at a nice price tag of rm800 that would give 8800gt a run for its money

At its MSRP of around RM800 or less, HD3870 is truly magnificient, especially if you have a Crossfire motherboard (like I do) which makes purchasing HD3870 much sweeter for future expansion. But currently, HD3870 is priced around 8800GT, which makes it...erm...unsuitable buy. But if you are willing to overlook the price, and look forward to DirectX 10.1, true PCI-Express 2.0, and CrossFire X...then, you're set. I suggest waiting a little while for a revision of HIS' HD3870 though. They may come up with Ice Q Turbo version or something. Then maybe you don't need to get DuOrb, HR-03 or FCZV9 or something.

i can say it's far better than 6600gt on that time.. coz i bought at the same price tag.. 3870 can play most latest games smoothly..
just waiting the time to squeeze it with better cpu.. though it's sufficient enough at the moment.. why worry much..
if still not enough.. can xfire them later..

Because it's been sold at higher than it should be? It's new. Everyone is cashing in on juz like how the retailers cashed in on 8800GT when it was new. Wait a while and the price MAY drop. But not sure when though. My guess is after 8800GTS NDA.

yup.. but still i got it below rm900.. even now saw some shop selling cheaper than before.. after a little price slash then restock.. should be ok.. 3850 price also dropping below Rm600..

from my observation ppl always compare which benchmark/games better.. i still think it's subjective..
there are few reasons why i grab them fast.. most of the times for upgrading ofcourse but got other reasons as well..

1-the stock cooler is better
2-it's run cooler.. even though report shows 88C on load.. still not even taste the heat..
3-low power on idle
4-less wattage on load
5-support dx10.1 n other features
6-well known for video related
7-suit my need..
8-xfirex better later

Stock Cooler...I think I'm gonna void the warranty and put in Thermalright HR-03 Plus instead tongue.gif Overclocking makes this card worthwhile especially with GDDR4...another reason I'm looking past NVIDIA for the first time (NVIDIA is still stuck with GDDR3 that can't be overclocked much).

oc gpu won't necessary for me now coz.. even not oc gpu i got 10k on 3dm06..
cpu bottlenecking.. but still not far left behind if consider rm200 cheapo cpu..
since it's reach 50fps for gaming.. it's ok then for now..
i tried 850/2400 no prob.. i bet it can go further with better cpu later..

I'm playing Bioshock, Gears of War and Hellgate London on 1920 x 1200. I'm anticipating Assasin's Creed and getting Crysis after I finish Bioshock and GoW. I think I need that OC bit.

870 for core is won't go.. maybe need some other tweak..
but ram got plenty of room more.. i need to slow down the horse now.. coz the rider getting older.. lol..

one thing i like on this new ati card becoz of the core usage... can monitor using rivatuner.. so i can check which game use highest % with the help of G15..
