agree the 'buy cheap play cheap'. there nothing wrong with it.
at the start i actually wanna to buy basic barebone kit like sky104/108, get gateron red (where i using now, so it wont go wrong)
and i manually lube all switches and stabilizer, but times go i have no time to do so. so going plan 2, buy custom build that already done the job.

mostly i wanna try how all these fine lubed switches and stabilizer feel. so later i can tune my phantom too
because phantom already giving super good typing and gaming experience without all these extra move, maybe it will become slightly better.

for beginner, they can start with a good or bad board. the goal is the same: to make that board provide good typing experience for the user. what matters is that the user learn how to optimize the board accordingly.

factory-prelubed switches are fine, but they never provide the feel that i want. you should try gateron red pro. it has lesser stem wobbles compared to gateron red.

in terms of switch tuning, there is no need to do everything in one go. with a hotswap board, you can do it progressively, e.g., one row at a time, or keys in alpha area first, then number row, then modifier keys, etc. there is also no need to worry about things like relative consistency, unless stock parts are so bad that you can feel obvious differences. in terms of switch lubing, as long as you stick to 'less is more', you will be fine.

all these mods and techniques are pretty straight forward. once you do it more you will get it. for instance, i overlube my switches if i use 203g2, 204/205g0. this is because i know after i type on the switches for few weeks, typing alone will help me spread the lube evenly, without side effects, like lube fart. i do control the amount of lube that i use.

tbh stock tecware phantom rgb are bad. i had one unit before. you should keep your phantom for a while, and do side-by-side comparisons with tuned boards when you have the chance.

Hmm. I see.
Yourself own the whole degreaser and lube or just buy 5-10g to done the job?

Ya, phantom still in hand, a daily drive keyboard.
The phantom you say bad is rgb or the typing feeling bad? .

i have multiple 50g of krytox gpl 203g2, 204g2, and 205g0/g2. for plain oil, i also have multiple 50ml of krytox gpl 101, 103, 104, 105, 106, and 107. they have different viscosity, so switch type, amount and techniques to apply them are also different.

as reference, you should get small volumes of 205g0 to try out first.

i meant stock tecware phantom rgb has bad typing feel.

been used to right thumb ENTER, very not familiar with smaller layout

which budget liner switches would you recommend? i dont think i'll do modding or lubing..

uh? you use left thumb to press enter key? that's an unusual typing style.

for linear switches, you should try jwick black, nylon top and bottom housing; two variants of spring weight, 58.5g, and 63.5g. there are also other members in jwick series (pc top, nylon bottom), jwick white (45g), red (62g), and yellow (65g).

it's better to lube the spring, and side rails of bottom housing, at least.

not to judge others, but just pointing out this now exists for keyboards. put it another way, would you spend money for something like this? i wouldn't. but it's apparently a thing if you feel like you need it laugh.gif

Personally I do prefer the Gateron yellows over the red.
My wife's K4 Keychron came with Gateron reds and I always felt the response was a bit too light.
But the main reason I got them was coz they have the SMD version for RGB else I would had gone with the Gateron Oil Kings.

these days, switches from haimu, especially their silent switches, caught the attention of mkb community. they have a different implementation of switch stem, compared to the cherry mx's. (there are other implementations, but cherry mx's are implemented by most well-known brands)

traditionally, silicone/rubber-like materials are used at each side of a stem to minimize key sound. however this results in mushiness. the feel is not as 'clean' as normal switches.

my custom keyboard arrived.
still need to adapt myself to use the new layout.
especially i keep move my finger to delete key on fullsize where keep accidentally pressed the pageup
the typing feeling actually much different in finger side (ofc it got different, just not that much), more to the sound lol
and the key that make most noise is the space bar. (not coimplain, just the first hand experience)

Here few picture for THE keyboard
it is big boy heavy, (2kg i think?)

keycap i pick from what seller suggested fews, 02 Darling the Franx.

josh5671, after using it for a while at stock configuration, you should start tuning it progressively.

hotswap boards are good for beginner, because they are relatively convenient to do tuning, so that user can pick up basics quicker.

this is especially true when the kits have value-added features, like foams, and top plates with different materials.

Stock key enough 'thock' enough, i believe seller already done what diy-er will do. Unless the performance degraded so far away i think wont detect it lol.

Other that, i think space bar will double check what causing different sound.
thankyou

Thanks... I always appreciate the 'silent switch' makers... ordered both Heartbeat/Whisper to try it out.

There's an interesting comment from a buyer

Looking at the price of my boba u4t and seeing how much the boba u4 is, I would recommend people who can spend a little more to just get the u4 instead. You are getting a lot better build quality.

For the Haimu whisper switch, there is no pretravel, but the actuation point is basically at the bottom-out point. Coming from my boba u4t at work I uesd to type gently, and with the Haimu it sometimes would not register my key press.

silent switches from haimu have shorter key travel distance (3.5mm; it's like cherry mx speed/silver).

the part about 'sometimes would not register key press' might be due to the light typing habit of the user. just swap the stock 65g springs with lighter ones.

New or used? You can get new without keycaps for around the same price.

I'm using the same setup, really liking it, preference is for gaming though, sounds marbly with the xda pbt keycaps, really nice.
