Hello everyone! I have stopped posting sometime last year due to getting fed up with racial forum post in LYN. But I'm back and with good news on the 360!

Xbox with falcon (65nm mobo) is already in US. Although somewhat in waiting mode. Waiting for stock clearance of 360 with launch mobo. Yet, some people who sent their 360 for repair already get this falcon box returned back.

There is even an info from MRCUR saying that it will be easy to add hdmi to falcon mobo. However there is no detail on how to do this.

I rate this as rumor from trusted source. But it sounds good!

360 with 65nm Falcon mobo has been touted as solution to RROD problem because it eat less power with reduce amount of heat. Meaning it will run quieter and cooler than current 90nm mobo. ( Yeah i chopped that from wikipedia somewhere )

So! more reason to buy Xbox 360. Let say at the end of this year. By that time most probably we can easily get our hand on this Falcon 360. Yeah!!! Amen for that.

Anyway, as a side note. I started a thread here about Xbox 360 support in Malaysia. Which in a hindsight is not a model post (i.e. children please don't do this at home). However it does get some attention from MS Malaysia (or someone that claim to be from MS Malaysia). As a result we get 2008 as some kind of tentative date for Malaysia Xbox 360 release date.

Lets cross our finger and hope that MS will officially release this Falcon 360 here this coming X-MAS season. So that we all can have a save console gaming via Xbox 360 on 2008.

To Microsoft Malaysia : 8 is a good number. Lets crack that egg!

sounds like good news. by the way, the premiums are "out of stock" now in Singapore. you can only get core packs now from suppliers.

who knows? maybe the new batch of premiums (and elites!) will have the new 65nm chip.

Bah , there's still Elite with 3rod . And as long 360 doesn't officially launch here , we'll be the one suffering .

Pretty envy with the states ppl where they got 3 year warranty of their 360 and free fix .

That is what I have in mind for MS Malaysia. Release officially in Malaysia, provide support (handle warranty return etc), give us the 3 year warranties for RROD and do all that before 2008 start.

Now we just need to find someone from Microsoft that read LYN forum and prod them here and there with our virtual and proverbial stick. In other words lets get some attention to this thread!

The 65nm chip appears in the 360 where the lot is higher than #0728 and made in July 07 and after. Sounds interesting but how long for that to reach Asia. If it's going to take 1-2 months to reach Europe.

Big 45nm chips late next year? Even bigger news there.

I think bro Djinn is quite accurate, beside piracy, it is the number of gamers here in Malaysia. Consider if all people in LYN buy original and play original. The amount is still quite small compare to other country such as Singapore or Taiwan. Hopefully, more player will join into our country gaming scene.

We will have to be confident of ourself first. Microsoft will care if we care. For big company like MS, (imho) it is not just the size of current market. It is also the potential of that market. Think positive.

Alternative to that is to be pessimistic. Now, if I'm Bill Gates and I just read some comment here about Malaysian not buying original games. About Malaysian small quantity of xbox supporter. And all that coming straight from the horse mouth. In this case the horse being malaysian gamers who post in LYN forums. I will not have much confident.

Oh! and about piracy? Since when piracy is solved by not selling and supporting the product? My humble opinion. Piracy is solved by education, affordable price and law enforcement. Not selling and supporting the product might be the cause for piracy in itself. It is like a blanket license to pirate since the original product is scarce and unsupported.

Sooner or later MS will have to support Malaysia. It is better for them and for us Malaysian gamers. that they do it sooner than later.

Food for thought, the pitifull state of Xbox in Malaysia is chicken and egg kind of situation. But for me, I can guarantee that the situation will improve once it is officially supported, well marketed and MS do thing to improve public perception about the box. Look at mobile phone market in Malaysia. Just go to Sungai Wang and see how many people is selling em. Hell, so much people selling. And the magic thing is there are lots of people buying. For a product that should last few years some people are changging it once in three month. Phew! fortunately I'm not one of em.

Meaning, the buying power and wants are there. Only the confident is missing at the moment.

The only valid reason for not supporting Malaysia previously is that MS is bussy in another better/lucrative market. Add to the fact that extending support to Malaysia from Singapore is not that much effort and investment. Duh! surely we all can see that it make sense!

Well... I do hope that if Malaysia M$ decided to launch X360 here, please and PLEASE put a reasonable price for the console. Don't follow Sony's path where they still sell you PSP for RM1199... OMG...

If the price cut is true and indeed MS decide to launch the Xbox360 here, i am pretty sure the Xbox community in Malaysia will grow larger than ever.
Just imagine that there is no publicity or any marketing actions for the Xbox360 and there is still about 200 players that have join the community.

If we add those who play on modded consoles, i think the number will be much greater.

Like what it is now, LIVE is essential and the key success factor for MS now.

actually there are some countries with official selling 360s but no official LIVE yet. and the prices of official videogames merchandise is often determined by the import/sales taxes imposed by the respective countries.

of all the SEA countries, only SGP has official launch + Live. flextronics is a SGP company that assembles 360s in china. alot of 360s DVDs are pressed in SGP. all defective SGP 360s are still shipped to a repair centre based in Aus.

actually the SGP xbox division is well established in SGP since xbox1. but looking at the SGP leaderboards (~3 thousand) sometimes i wonder if all the investment/promotion made by the SGP xbox division over the years has actually break even yet?

then maybe MS should gabung M'sia and S'pore together as one unit. They can have the Live tag attached to S'pore but have some customer service here. I can dream, can't I?

Actually, i am sure we have a huge amount of gamers in Malaysia, but the majority of them are buying pirated software (and many are proud of it too)
Before we start clamoring for Microsoft to do anything, we'll need a change in mentality.


Grey imports will always be cheaper than the ones available locally. An imported Nokia costs lower than an official one. I believe this is partly due to taxes and blatant profit making/milking.
The only thing i disagree is that Sony M'sia I have heard would not fix unmodded grey imports - that's lame. Still Sony product meh!

How are we able to tell if its a falcon chip with the naked eye?

As the current batch of premiums with HDMI port are still not known to have falcon in it, we cant really tell. Can we?

haha, relax abit. many ppl think MS is very confident in the extra heatsink + glue improvements.

checking www.360drives.com, HDMI premiums (zephyr) are lot 0709, 0710, 0711, 0712, 0713 manufactured since March'07. then MS announce the 3 year 3RL warranty and the $1bil charge in May'07 (this is mainly for earlier sets that dont have extra heatsink + glue)

so my gut feeling is extra heatsink + glue is the solution MS has come up/tested with. 65nm chips are still coming in the future, but not sure what improvements can 65nm chips bring.

hahahahaha..been reading the link given by haris...and now..almost all 360 users that posted there r hoping for the 3rod.....to enable them to get the replacement with the new spec...several of them r withholding the shipment for warranty claims until september to ensure they r getting the new spec too...and what amaze me..the process of warranty claims have been improved tremendously..smooth as silk with an extra gidt if it is getting delayed....hats on to Microsoft...too bad..we r not covered it here...cant wait to get my Halo edition direct from Spore for full 3 year warranty...I guess that the best option for me now....

How to see if you have a 65nm (Falcon) console:

First, get a flashlight that is very bright. Then put your console upside down (HD side down). You should be looking at an black or grey piece of plastic which is the bottom vent. Shine the flashlight directly into the bottom of the console (it works best to sit the flashlight on the plastic).

Then move the flashlight to the right side of the plastic. When you look inside of the console directly below the light, you will see a large white piece of plastic. This is the airflow shroud. Next, move the flashlight to the left a bit and look into the console again. You are looking for the large silver square that is directly in front of the airflow shroud. This piece will tell you whether or not you have a 65nm console.

Why do people care about the CPU it's the GPU that need to be look at,as the GPU created more heat then the CPU.That is why GPU overheat always occur error 0102 exp

since for falcon, CPU is 65nm but GPU is still 90nm, why not they switch the heatsinks around and redesign the mobo? i feel the bigger heatsink can benefit the GPU more.

Don't know yet, that only based on theory. Somebody experience with falcon console may tell what the real story. Heard also not only cpu & motherboard they changed but also cooling system design.

Even the Halo 3 limited Xbox360 which is said to be using the new 65nm cpu is not spared of 3ROD.

Yeah i supposed it was never really confirmed, so take it lightly. We'll see in the near future though. Everybody knows the main cause of 3ROD is the GPU and the mainboard design, not the CPU.

problem is the halo3 edition just release few days ago then 3rod.... that was fast 90mm chip not that weak maybe that guy never off it since he bought on sep 25?

my elite also kinda hot so i put a fan from behind to suck all the hot air out it more cooler

Well the scratched Halo 3 disc was once considered a fake news, photoshopped, etc.... but in the end it really is true. So not every news out there is 100% fake then.

The problem is that Microsoft since venturing into the hardware side, they've been making losses in their XBOX division.

Thats what happens when you specialize too much in Software to begin with. Of course having partnered with lots of hardware manufacturers with their proprietary software its not that hard to get info on hardware and the works.

Still...after 2 years of the release since the 2nd generation of XBOX so many problems still occurs. And I don't see why they can't rectify it ASAP as they have a stock reservation of cash that could buy Singapore 100 times on whole.

hey i am back in action after a while, my previous 360 was dead and i called up microsoft, i sent it back to microsoft for a bloody extended warranty but they said they are going to charge me for servicing, so i asked them to send the console back and traded it at gamestop for a HDMI enabled 360, not the elite version, so, is mine the falcon machine?the mfg date is 7-20-2007.

You can say that Microsoft are money minded after the tremendous amount of money they have loss since xbox 1.
Xbox 1 hardware was consider one of the best, or maybe it is the best. As they are the one that introduce hardisk as a standard to the console.

Still, they are not selling as much as expected eventhough the console were more powerful & cheaper. (all come down to games) After last generation of race, they wana rush 360 to the market but at the same time, cost saving. So probably that's one of the reason with the cheapskate QC and expensive accesories. (Rock Band bundle comes with wired guitar because wireless more epxensive, publisher need to pay for royalty fee. Also they learn alot from PS2 when it comes to pricing & the way to sell/manufacture their hardware)

Eventhough the 360 hardware is not losing money anymore, but the price tag still remain the same...that's because they are 'still' leading the market just like the ps2 era and 360 has the highest attach rate of game for each console sold. (compare to PS3 & Wii) Most important is their xbox division are still not turning up any profit, things might change after the Halo 3 launch though and that's what they are hoping for...at least for Microsoft Shane Kim.

So if people really wana see the 'true' improvement of QC & price drop, i would say by 2008 when PS3 have their big guns out...then things would be interesting.
For now, i would say their money are spent on securing exclusive or getting more 3rd party onboard...awesome marketing too.

unreliable h/ware is a great hassle for end-users but bring many benefits to MS.

a consumer base who are used to crappy products is the best kind of consumers to exploit. every time a gamer register their 3RL console for warranty, means more data-mining can be done. 3 year warranty also reduces the lure of modding for those casuals. u sell modchips in the US, and u risk jailtime

and the whole 3RL episode brought a lot of jobs for those telephone customer service agents, console repair technicians and UPS drivers

You have a point there. Though it may have created more job opportunities, the data mining aspect -whenever a gamer calls up a customer service centre in regards to a 3ROD console- is a scary thing. You'll have MS piecing together information of the consumer market based on each and every XBOX360 owner's manufacturing serial number. Privacy issues anyone?

But the extension of the 3 year warranty is good as it'll probably buy time for MS to properly rectify the problems of the current console and improving their QOS. However, if they retract the extended warranty, there will be an uproar.

Well, Proton have their power window.

They say the third time's the charm. Falcon looks promising, but Jasper sounds even better (another article also mentions thinner memory chips or something).

Well I guess I'm gonna have to wait again.

In the meantime, expect second hand 360s to flood the market as Falcon starts rolling out.

Microsoft will release updated versions of its Xbox 360, this time with even more 65nm chippery, from August 2008, the console's pundit-in-chief has claimed.

The new version is codenamed 'Jasper' - actually, that's the name of the motherboard new models will be based upon - and is set to incorporate an incarnation of the console's AMD-made R500 graphics chip fabbed at 65nm.

So claims Dean Takahashi, who's been covering the Xbox 360 since before it was launched and last year published Xbox 360 Uncloaked, the first history of the console's development.

R500 is currently fabbed at 90nm, and it's the 90nm version that's being used in 'Falcon', the new Xbox 360 motherboard that incorporates a 65nm version of the multi-core IBM PowerPC processor that drives the console. Falcon also integrates HDMI.

Falcon was rumoured to be on the verge of being launched for most of 2007. Microsoft finally began shipping Falcon-based Xbox 360s last month, it emerged recently.

Falcon's use of a 65nm CPU allows it to get away with a less complex cooling system, and the introduction of Jasper will cut the components' heat output further. Excessive heat is widely blamed for the infamours Red Ring of Death that has plagued many a 360 and forced Microsoft to extend the console's warranty period to three years - at a cost of $1bn.

Added on October 21, 2007, 1:39 pmAh, here it is.

It says when Falcon recently rolled out, there was a US$50 cut in price... made possible through the cheaper mfg costs related to the smaller CPU (cheaper chip, less parts needed for heat dissipation etc). Plus Microsoft updated the box with an HDMI port.

Now imagine when Jasper rolls out! Expect it to be even cheaper since PS3 has initiated a price war, plus the possibility of MS updating the box with even more goodies.

Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon comes Jasper

Microsoft didn't want you to know about Falcon, and it certainly doesn't want you to know about its successor Jasper. But that's another secret we have to unveil.

Jasper is the code name for the next motherboard for the Xbox 360. It will becoming next August, in time for next year's holiday season. Jasper is going to have a 65-nanometer graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. That isn't much information, but it's enough to tell us about their cost-reduction plan. If you ask me, it's a bit of a slow pace.

I don't know why it will take Microsoft essentially three years to cost reduce the size of the graphics chip through a manufacturing shrink. It doesn't seem like they're in a hurry to launch a redesigned Xbox 360 graphics chip, considering that Intel introduced its first 65-nm chips a long time ago. ATI uses TSMC to make its chips out of Taiwan, and TSMC hasn't been the fastest at moving to 65-nm manufacturing. I understand these tasks are difficult and they take a lot of engineering resources. Microsoft has had to divert a lot of engineers to debugging problems with Xbox 360 reliability. Even so, you would think that they would have moved faster, since the move to 65-nm graphics chip will likely be one of the best things they can do to improve the reliability.

As readers of this blog know, Falcon is being used in Xbox 360s that are currently rolling off the production lines. It has a 65-nm IBM microprocessor on it, instead of the previous 90-nm version. Here's something that Xbox 360 buyers will want to know. Both Falcon and its predecessor Zephyr (used in the Xbox 360 Elite) have different thermal solutions than the original Xbox 360. You've seen the heat sinks in the cut-out photos posted elsewhere. The Microsoft engineers believe those heat sinks will be sufficient as a solution for keeping Xbox 360s from overheating. From their point of view, you don't have to wait until Jasper to get a reliable machine.

From a neutral point of view, I would guess that Jasper would be more reliable than Falcon on heat issues, and Falcon will be more reliable than its predecessors. The Falcon board has the same old 90-nm graphics chip on it. And many have pointed out that the big heat problem in the Xbox 360 is due to the graphics chip. The Falcon board will likely give off less heat. But the real serious heat saver looks like it will come with Jasper.

I'm sure that Jasper will carry lower costs than Falcon. That's because it will have a smaller graphics chip and smaller memory chips as well. That translates into material savings, which means lower costs. If you're wondering why you should care? Maybe you don't need to care. But there are folks on the Falcon thread who want to know this kind of information and here it is. Certainly, Microsoft will be in a position to cut prices again by next August. If you recall, after it got Falcon out the door, Microsoft cut $50 off the price of the Xbox 360.

If I were Microsoft, I would try to pull in the date of Jasper as soon as possible. What they need right now is a lower cost so that they can be more competitive against the Wii and so they leave no openings for Sony. As of now, the 65-nm graphics chip isn't done. They're still working on it. Microsoft declined to comment, other than to say that it constantly updates the components in the Xbox 360 but doesn't comment on them.

The Jasper is all i want. I confident this time MS will overcome 3ROD issue with Jasper because of using 65nm for both CPU and Graphic chips.

They knew the problem... and yet take 3 long years to properly fix it!

It seems to suggest one thing.... Microsoft took a huge gamble by rushing out an half-baked, substandard console design just to beat Sony to the punch to launch the next generation console.

Now that they've achieved that, they're finally starting to focus on fixing up their faulty design.

Oh for goodness sakes, the writer of the 2nd article has a point, for the sake of beating rivals to the start of the next gen rivalry, MS has to sacrifice reliability JUST so that they can be No.1

Okay fine they did that but at what cost? Quality control slips up and almost 3 years later, users all over the world are complaining of the overheating and the infamous 3ROD.

The thing is, the waiting game will never end. Just accept the fact that nothing in life will last forever. You will be happier that way.

By the time you get your 360, everyone will be talking about the 3ROD (if there's lights) for the new Xbox or Playstation.
