Factory made boards use lead free solder for environmental reasons. They have a higher melting point.

Adding some leaded solder to the joint can help.

Nice! Did you break them in or used them just like that? How do they feel?

Nah I didn't break them in, I just made sure I lubed them properly and it feels and sound great. Really smooth. It's also my first custom keyboard. Was originally going to put Invyr Pandas on them but after reading about the review on the final product, I cancelled my pre-order I made since June at the last minute. I'm totally fine with linear or tactile switches really.

Oh OK. Many NK cream posts I read say it is best to break them in for a while, then only lube. Not everyone agrees though.

Yeah I read it's a subjective thing which is why I didn't bother breaking them in. Just takes too much work and time.

mkb users that have sufficient know-how will not go for commercial boards anymore. it's really easier for them to get parts that they want, tune, and build one themselves.

with the right basic tools, building customs is actually a relatively painless experience.
*
But i just want to have a MKB out of the box, instead of sourcing all the different parts and fixing them altogether (building custom can be a painless experience but time is gold). What can i do? Which brand is better?

in that case, get those from leopold, varmilo, or filco. these are top-class commercial boards, in terms of typing experience. they are built nicely from inside out. remember to look into their respective features first before purchase.

time is gold alright, but time spent to fine tune something that you will use for a long time, with all the right parts, is a very practical investment imo. alternatively, you can also subscribe to experienced builder services. quovadis123 and GRexer both have good, no-nonsense experience and skills.

Practical investment doesn't mean that you have to DIY it lah. Anyway, people who DIY their own stuff usually have the passion and they make it as a long time hobby. For me, I don't want to buy plenty of tools only to use them once, cause i know i don't have the passion nor patience for it. So buy one MKB out of the box it is! biggrin.gif Thanks for the recommendations! Gonna check it out!

well, for a custom build, you don't need to diy it, or get tools to use them only once. builders that i suggested above can help you with that. they have all the right skills and tools for the job.

If you never encounter an enthusiast's custom tuned keyboard, you could buy anything other than "budget" brands and be perfectly happy with it. Ignorance is bliss as they say.

well that was the time i do office job so spent most of my day typing and to have that hhhnnngghhh feels when typing is just hhnngghhh.

so few hundreds and ah longs later, im still a pleb but enjoying keyboards more.
still cant explain to ppl why a keyboard cost hundreds.

this is leopold's SP-Star grey linear, 67g. (prepackaged 110 units in plastic jars) the switch is fairly new, with some good characteristics, including tightly fit housing, and relatively less stem wobbles. it can be a good replacement for cherry mx.

for this round, i will swap the stock springs with 63.5g linear-rated ones from everglide, and use kelowna switch films instead of TX 0.150mm switch films.

Do you actually use your keyboard at work or what? I spent 9 ~ 10 hours at work and only use keyboard mostly also for some minor gaming at night. customized seems very far fetched.
But i have been using logitech g413, im ok with it. Just curious about other mechanical mechanic keyboards.

Yes actually. My tuned MKB is at my desk in the office most of the time. I bring it home on the weekend if I have some modification in mind. Haven't had a gaming PC at home for more than 7 years now.

oh no wonder.
Because i checked Shopee, the brands that was named just now - Leopold and etc, you need at least RM500 to even get one. That's actually a lot of money for something you don't use much unless you are enthusiast.

I would think that those people who work in fields that require so much typing would enjoy it a lot.

clearly we are discussing the same thing, but with different contexts. mkb modding is our hobby, while you're looking for prebuilts. that's why we have different views, use cases, and conclusions.

you asked for suggestions based on my points of view. my points of view are based on long-term typing experience on different prebuilts and custom builds. i suggested the above because i have them, among other brands, and imo they are relatively closer to entry-level custom builds, but much cheaper. for instance, a leopold with mechanical switches has solid build qualities; comes with thick pbt cherry profile double-shot key caps (1.5mm thick), detachable cable, tuned stabilizers, and foamed at the right locations. you simply cannot find something like what leopold can offer in most brands, at that price.

however, it's really fine to get whatever you want. as long as you like it, it's all good smile.gif

I am looking at Leopold right now in Shopee at PcByte. Looks good.
Some of the colours are very enticing but impractical cause I will go crazy if it turns dirty. xD
