Short review of the 4 tactile switches that I considered for my endgame board.
Attached Image
L-R Cherry RGB Brown, Outemu Sky with clear no slot top, JWK Shogoki, Gazzew Boba U4T

1. Cherry browns were my first love so it will always hold a special place in my heart. These particular switches have generic 67g gold springs, bag lubed in 105, housings are lubed with 205G0, and filmed with TX films. They are smooth, light tactiles and with the white nylon bottoms, have a nice thock to them, and very low wobble after filming. With a bit (a lot actually) of work, this is a switch that I really love to use. My baseline to compare the other switches to.

2. Outemu Sky. Removed the original nylon top and replaced with clear no slot tops also from Outemu. Both components were developed in collaboration with Gazzew. I guess you could say it is the spiritual successor of the Boba U4T. Despite having a nylon bottom, this switch does not sound very nice to me. And the tactile bump feels a bit weird to me even after lubing. I think the start of the bump is a bit 'sharp'? It kinda feels like it is about to get stuck, then you overcome the bump and bottom out.

3. JWK Shogoki. These were from a GB. JWK Rara recolored to match the colors from Neon Genesis Evangelion (forgive me if I got that wrong, I'm not a fan of this anime). With a special 65g linear switch from Thic Thock. Covid delays plus lousy GB planning by Thic Thock (and lousy communication with me personally) meant that these switches arrived very late, so I ended up building with the U4Ts before these even arrived. And I must say I'm glad I did so. These were my first JWK switches and the legendary smoothness of the housing is well warranted. But other than that, just like the Outemu Sky, it did not deliver a nice sound despite a nylon bottom. To my ears, even my Cherry RGB Browns sounded better. Add to that, this is the first switch that I bought (including testers) that actually have a noticeable spring noise. I did not lube as I plan to sell it off, but I am nevertheless disappointed. Even unlube Cherries do not have this issue to me. The bump is nice and light though. Very slightly more tactile than the browns.

4. Gazzew Boba U4T. My new favourites. Long pole stems in a proprietary nylon blend housings. The pole bottom out delivers on the Thocks. Already smooth without lube, after lubing it is even smoother and sounds better. Very tight tolerances, no filming needed. And with very very light lube to the tactile bumps, a small amount of tactility is lost and smoothness gained, a tactical decision. Coupled with a light (to me) 62g spring, I'm getting the light tactile that I want, no wobble and beautiful sound. The only downside is the tops are opaque which I wanted clear for lighting purposes, but with my custom clear acrylic case, it turns out that didn't matter after all.

it's good to find out your favorites, out of the sea of switches (or other parts of your boards). for no. 3, it might be due to the leaf, not spring. we can always make springs to go quiet with lubing.

Oh for sure we can. But all the switches I like sounded good stock, lubing and other work make them sound much better. I guess I was just disappointed because of the high expectations from the hype of the GB.

Now that the phase 1 lockdown has tripled my insanity, think I will build a board to have fun with naevy or pewters.

yeah hypes. eventually we will just accept the fact that most of the times, hypes are just words, unless proven otherwise by ourselves.

i have been disappointed many times. luckily for me, few of those times, good stuff existed.

now they have changed the thickness in the description for the new epbt double-shot abs set, from 1.1mm to 1.5mm, https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=650012367264

however, epbt double-shot abs cherry profile keycaps always have 2 different thicknesses: the thinner bottom part, which is 1.1mm, and the top part that has a thickness of 1.5mm. the feel, imo, is like a full 1.5mm. the main reason why they do this is to reduce interference caused by north-facing switch orientation to ASDF row (home row), when using cherry-profile keycaps.

Hi all, I have only just started getting into the mechanical keyboard scene recently.

Got myself a Keychron K4 (v2), aluminium build with Gateron Blue switch (non-swappable). I also bought a set of generic black & white pudding keycaps to go along with the keyboard.

Here's my one small issue though. The End, PgUp & PgDn keys are located at R4 of the keyboard & the dimensions of the pudding keycaps I got for these 3 keys are of R3 & R2.

Need some recommendation/suggestion where can I buy R4 End, PgUp & PgDn pudding keycaps separately. I know my chances would be slim also because I'd assume people rarely sell key individually like this.

Thanks in advance!

the main problem for now is that i can only compile Vial-enabled firmware in Linux; still no luck with msys2.

I'm afraid finding pudding keycaps for diff row profile is near impossible. I would suggest getting blank black keycaps to fill it in or the expensive side, plug in some artisans biggrin.gif

Orrrr...a second pudding keyset just for that few keys

starting from today, CX60 source code is now officially a part of QMK source distribution, https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/tree/ma.../keyboards/cx60

thanks to Y.O.N for the helps; and thanks to QMK reviewers (drashna, fauxpark) for helping us to get the codes optimized.

community efforts are always the best. now i will proceed to the next steps: Via and Vial.

edit:

we are glad that Vial is very linear with our submission, it's done: https://github.com/vial-kb/vial-qmk/tree/vial/keyboards/cx60

I have a budget of ~RM600+- and am thinking of upgrading my Blackwidow 2013. I would like to have full sized KB + RGB + detachable cable if possible. Any recommendations? There's just too many brands in the market to pick from...

Ha! Thic Thock themselves have posted that their current line of springs is less than perfect when used in JWK switches!

From their latest Discord announcement:

"TT Spring V2
We are going to bring something new to the market very soon. Arrangements and details as follows,

We are going to dish out a lineup that is made specifically for JWK switches, meanwhile still retain the Cherry standard spring we are offering at the moment. What's the difference? The difference is that the internal structure of JWK switches are generally different than of Cherry MX. Our current lineup caters mostly of the Cherry MX switches. When it is used in JWK switches, there are still noticeable pings, which is why we are offering JWK switches spring, in hopes of eliminating the unwanted spring ping, as well as offering better compatibility -> performance with the JWK lineups"

maybe it's like the case of kailh box switches.

however, it also sounded like no one did anything called qc in the process. well, maybe some one did, but the batch was different from the actual one.

I do find that these are better out of the packaging than the glorious pandas, and cheaper too. you can use them as it is, or just apply a small amount of lube to the base of the spring and the rails of the bottom housing (this is what gazzew recommended if you want to lube these switches)

It's this same switch that won my wife who's a long time linear user to the tactile gang too, although she uses the silent U4 for her office keyboard.

Yup I saw Gazzew's lubing method as well as his recommendation to use lube thinner than 205G0. But he admitted that his method is more for speed and efficiency. Since I wasn't really pressed for time, I tested using my normal lubing method (Taeha's method) and was happy with the results, so that's what I ended up using.
