abt transportation..got a few question
1. what type of pass do we actually need in osaka/kyoto?...my tokyo trip, i only use my icoca card all the way
the trip posted by regentCID somemore include JR train shocking.gif
2. if the subway in kyoto straight forward or is it like tokyo where 1 track occupies a few train going different place that need to use hyperdia to track it?
because based on what regentCID posted, seem like very straight forward..like each train has their own track

anyone can answer?

Based on my experience:
1. You only need a pass if you intend to travel often on a bus, subway or train within a day. Example, a Kyoto 1-day bus pass costs 600 yen while a single bus ride costs 230 yen. So only if you take a bus 3 times or more within a day will you save money with a bus pass. Otherwise an Icoca card is enough.

2. Kyoto subway is easy peasy - only 2 lines with some stations intersecting with the train lines.

1. You use more subway in Osaka, but actually there's not much need of a pass because savings is not much. probably just need a 1-day pass to save little money on a packed itinerary day. Obviously you won't need it when commuting to USJ

2. Subway is straightforward in Kyoto but actually most of the tourist attractions is more accessible by bus. Get the pass for bus because it pay off itself when you use the buss >3 times

Finally exchange my soon to expires miles for a trip to Tokyo in April with my family. As I will be a first time being a tourist there, anyone knows where is the best place to rent a car? Planning to drive out of city for two days. Not sure where but karuizawa might be an option.

If you are on a budget trip and yet would like to go for a normal hotel I would suggest agora place near asakusa. It is just next to tawaramchi station with a reasonable price

If you are going to Osaka city and its attractions, I would strongly suggest you buy the Osaka Amazing Pass for two days. Free rides on all subways (exlude JR) and buses and many free entry into many attractions around osaka. Really worth it.
Like a forummer just mentioned, Kyoto is much more direct and simple. The main attractions are mostly out of town though, but accessible by bus.

1. Osaka amazing pass is one good deal IMO especially if u fancy boat cruises around Osaka laugh.gif
if u are traveling to/from KIX, you can get the Nankai airport edition ones (I had to meet up with my parents at KIX last month, so the return cost of the train alone is like 2/3 of the 1-day Osaka amazing pass Nankai edition).
Covered like 3-4 boat cruises, Ferris wheel n a couple of parks/attractions from morning till midnight biggrin.gif

For first timers, I would say anywhere within walking distance of the Yamanote line is OK.

For now mar22 first bloom mar29 full bloom. You need to pray that there is no strong wind / rain those few days before you arrive because a big storm will wipe everything out. If conditions are calm then 1st April still will be very nice, trees will be mostly pink and the petals starting to drop so it's like raining petals (hanafubuki)

Just a simple post without pics from my recent trip with my parents this week.

TL;DR:
Took Thai Airways and used JR TOKYO Wide Pass to have day trips outside Tokyo.
Mainly just touch and go because it is a short trip.
Details of Wide Pass

1) SUN: Flight KL to Tokyo

2) MON: Tokyo

3) TUE: Kawaguchiko/Kofu @ Yamanashi Prefecture

4) WED: Mito @ Ibaraki Prefecture

4) THU: Karuizawa @ Nagano Prefecture

5) FRI: Return Flight to KL

Why I took Thai? Because I got it cheap via Expedia.
Thai Airways return with 4 nights in 4 star hotel in Tokyo is just RM2.2k per pax so just try.
Considering that parents are aging, next time will just suck it up and pay more. laugh.gif
