You need to be on 5GHz AC to fully utilise the speed. You will never get full speed on 2.4GHz.Home Networking WiFi Router Discussion Thread, Updated for 2023

QUOTE(SilentVampire @ Dec 29 2018, 01:03 PM) Hi, yes I know that. But my concern is, when Im near the router, LAN and wifi is work. But when in room (20ft away from router), phone hardly to connect wifi, pc with wifi adapter langsung can't work with wifi. From earlier advise, you said that it probably router issue (tm given one - tplink ac1200). In this case, I think better change router. But regret i have no time to study most disccusing brands in this forum (tp link, dlink, tenda asus etc) because I cannot tahan room has no internet access. Hence would appreciate if anyone could advise which router is suitable for me: No require maximum speed but can reach my room with about 50-80mpbs im satisfy enough. Mainly wife and me watch videos via phone, pc and laptop only when in room. I think I will exclude tplink since heard that tplink's after sales service/ update firmware is bad. Perhaps will consider budeget around 200++ DIR-850L DIR-842 DIR-825+ tenda AC10U |

If you think TP-Link after sales is bad, they are in fact better than D-Link and much better than Tenda. |

Hi everyone,
Im currently using a Netgear Nighthawk X8 router. I've set it up with the PPPOE and both the Vlan 500 and Vlan 600 and all is working fine. I've been using this setup for almost 2 months with Unifi 100mbps. Today, i got a call from a TM guys saying that he's coming to change my BTU because i got turboed to 500mbps. So he came and change the BTU unit to a new Huawei unit. He configured the BTU and connected it to the router but now the router is not working. He did everything he can for almost 25 minutes and still no internet. Then he tries it with his own router which was a D-link unit (cant remember the model) and the internet works. It does shows the speed of 500mbps down and 100mbps up. Then, he try again with my router and the internet doesn't work. I've tried resetting the router and setting it up from scratch. Did all the PPPOE and Vlans. Still nothing. So now im using the Nighthawk as an AP and connected it to the old TM router (DIR-615) just so i can use the internet. [New Huawei Modem ---> DIR-615 with Wi-Fi off -----> Nighthawk X8 as AP] Any idea on what the problem is? Thanks! |

QUOTE(rickk @ Dec 29 2018, 01:15 PM) Hi, yes I know that. You can also consider D-Link DIR-868L (RM 200). I'm using this as ground floor AP. AFAIK this is the cheapest AC1750 router here. It also supports DD-WRT & Tomato firmware. However it's harder to find as it's an old router. Review:But my concern is, when Im near the router, LAN and wifi is work. so bought it yesterday & do the speed test. omg, max speed still 110. but when direct connect from modem to pc, its can get over 300+. Why my wired connection through router cant get over than 110 since already used cat6? I'm using TP Link AC1200 with 500mbps plan |

Hi, i just bought tp link c2300. Need advice on below:
1. Smart Connect - i turn on smart connect but 2 of my phone samsung s7 and note 5 auto connect @ 2.4ghz instead of 5g most of the time. Ipad is auto connect @ 5ghz. Any idea why it does not connect @ 5ghz, all in same room with 1 wall. 2. I place the router in middle 1st floor, i notice that coverage in ground floor signal for 5ghz is not good, < 50mb. Is it normal 5ghz not good to cover 2 storey for different floor? (2.4ghz coverage is good even in ground floor. Thanks |

The thing about 5GHz is that it provides faster connection at a shorter distance than 2.4GHz. It is also won't perform well if it has to go through concrete wall(s). |

Yes, you are correct. 5ghz only for short distance which i believe this is the reason why different floor signal drop a lot. 2.4ghz can cover whole house both ground and 1st floor without issue. For smart connect, will monitor and see. |
