TAKE CHARGE OF WINDOWS STARTUP: MSCONFIGI dunno if most of you know how to do this already, but for those who don't, read on...
Wondering why your Vista (or XP, it works regardless) takes its own sweet time to start up? It probably because of the fact you have about a 100 programs designed to start at boot (which is bad)...

How do we take charge of the situation? It's gonna get a bit technical from this point on, but if you want to try to take charge of the situation, read on!
There are some programs that are designed specifically for this task, but for now, lets stick with what the big M has provided us... Namely, MSCONFIG.EXE...
DISCLAIMER: IMPROPER MESSING AROUND WITH MSCONFIG CAN MESS UP YOUR WINDOWS, but not by much, as I've never had Windows corrupting itself over playing around with the STARTUP tab... Try not to play around with anything else unless you KNOW what you're doing...
So, what do we do with this program?
1. *Vista* Press the windows key, straight away type "msconfig" and press enter. A UAC prompt will come up asking you to confirm this action. Press "Continue".
*XP* Select RUN from the START menu (or just press WIN+R). Type "msconfig.exe" and press enter.
2. Go to the tab marked "Startup". Don't touch anything else.
3. Deselect stuff you don't think is useful for you. For a typical M1210 installation, stuff that you DON'T need include:
- Both entries from nVidia (the driver helper AND the other one).
- Any stuff from Roxio.
- Dell's own utilities (unless you're fond of QuickSet, which I don't use).
- Creative's media library thingy (but not the Updreg, read on below).
- Any IM client (MSN, YM, GTalk, Whatever - you can start this up when you want to IM).
- Any P2P stuff (Ares, LimeWire, BitTorrent - again, start this up when you want it to)
- Acrobat Quick Loader (You really don't need this, switch to FOXIT READER for faster PDF reading).
- Any form of Microsoft Office quickloaders (again, when you need it, find it).
Stuff you ABSOLUTELY NEED (at least for the M1210):
- Windows Defender (Unless you're using your own Malware scanner)
- Creative's Updreg (seems to keep your Audigy Software edition drivers working)
- Synaptic's Pointing Device Driver (keeps the touchpad working as it should)
- Broadcom's Bluetooth Software (keeps the bluetooth working)
- C-Major Audio (keeps the sound working, and gives you a choice to switch to S/PDIF / surround output)
- Your anti-virus (Mine's NOD32)
- Windows Sidebar (If you need it, I don't)
4. Restart/reboot.
5. After reboot, Windows Vista will tell you that a program has been blocked from running at startup. That's just MSCONFIG, so wait until everything has been started, left click on the icon, pick "run blocked programs" to show a dialog box. In XP, the dialog box simply appears after start-up.
6. Select the "Do not start MSCONFIG at startup..." or something checkbox and press "Cancel".
7. Re-run MSCONFIG if something goes wrong, and try enabling a what you think might have caused the problem...
It's a trial and error thing, but it CAN speed up your start-up considerably (I've seen people taking 5 minutes to boot just because they have 20 programs running at start up)... I'll post up a services tweaking guide if you guys feel like it, but that's quite a step up - as it really DOES have the power to break your Windows...

Msconfig can also help rid you of any adware/malware... By deselecting stuff YOU KNOW isn't part of your laptop's normal systems...

And, this works across a variety of systems, not just the Dell XPS M1210... But you'll have to KNOW FIRST what's needed and what's not... And for that, GOOGLE should be your best friend...
If you're not sure what you need/don't need, PM me a screen shot of your MSCONFIG, and I'll try to help...
For the sake of referance: WHAT I'M RUNNING AT STARTUP
Windows Defender
Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
Creative Updreg
C-Major Audio
NOD32 Antivirus System
I8FanGUI Application (Temp measurement Software)
Avedesk 2.0 (GUI modification app - creates nice sharp PNG icons on the desktop)
QuckGammaLoader by Eberhard Werle (helps the nVidia drivers to keep the Gamma settings like I want it to)
Bluetooth SoftwareI have two more programs, AutoHotKey (hotkey program) and Samurize (GUI modding, CPU/RAM/Swap monitoring), running with admin privileges at logon (which Vista doesn't allow actually) through a loophole in the Task Scheduler... But that's a whole different story...

I hope this helps... And as always, correct me if I'm wrong...

Added on July 3, 2007, 3:06 amNext up:
1) Using modded Vista themes ala XP with hacked system files, IF YOU DARE...

2) Modding your Vista Log-On screen - the HARD way and the EASY way...

3) Using AutoHotKey to turn your multi-button mouse into a Program Launcher / Task Controller (at the fraction of the usual RAM usage of a manufacturer provided program, e.g. Logitech's Quickset)... Or just using it to create convenient hotkeys to launch programs...
Which one do you guys think I should do first?UPDATE ON BETA 106.03 NVIDIA DRIVERS: It
DOES NOT play well with 3rd-Party (aka, downloadable) OpenGL screensavers... Screws up Aero after a while...
