yo Eiraku my man,

whatsup? I haven't seen u for quite sometimes edi. Been busy huh? I am kinda busy as well, just online from like 2-3 days of "camping" in library. Still, I have one paper to finish tomorrow.

By the way, good thing that XPS of urs still be able to play current games. My laptop is now back to it's mothership already (super-long "fortunate" story of derred). And oh, did i mentioned it will never ever come back?

In short, 3 factory visits in 8 months, AW kinda agree I received a lemon, while others have their systems for 2 years working flawlessly.

So they credit fund my laptop in full amount shocking.gif

I was in disbelief myself, apparently their CS has improved alot since Dell acquired them. So right now I am waiting for their brand new line ups which due like mid-Jan next year.

m15x

I am opting the 15incher instead of 17incher. The major drawbacks are obvious; too heavy and expensive. Since I have this budget desktop to cover up my missing laptop atm, so going for "desktop replacement" laptop isn't wise at all. If it's going to sit on the desk most of the time, it's better I fund up the desktop (which I already did, 8800gt is coming like tomorrow) for better gaming experience. The laptop shall be focus on-the-go purposes.

Luckily I bought the casing back then (if u still remember). I really had a bad dilemma on deciding which one I shall choose between the two new laptop lines, but when I saw the estimate price for 8800m gtx is like 500~600 USD per card, I think it's really a waste of money (with condition that I have a desktop in my workstation). Desktop's 8800gt is more or less better in terms of performance compared to 8800m gtx, and obviously much cheaper (like 240 USD with shipping and all). That saves a semi-road warrior like myself lots lots of money (like 250 USD; somewhere around RM838 as for today's currency rate).

Hi, Had my XPS M1210 since dec 2006. Its one year now and its still great....waranty's over for me (keep fingers cross that nothing will happen). besides the darkening stains on the palm area below the keyboard and a dent at the righthand bottom corner everything is in great shape. I've even put mac OSX tiger on it half a year ago and just added a 2gb sodimm 2 weeks ago. No complaints what so ever smile.gif

don't worry we're still here...and nope not having any issues with my xps...just upgraded to ultimate a month back and 2gb ram...only problem sems to be that BaoFeng codec im using seems to have some issues with vista dreamscenes...as i cant play some of them...and temperatures running a little high even when idling...but i guess thats due to dreamscene which uses up gpu and cpu power

Yep, nearly 7-8 months later (+ one fall) and everything's just peachy... thumbup.gif

No complaints make a good laptop, rite? Myself I'm still head-over-heels for my Axim (which is also rock solid, albeit as quirky as the M1210), and my laptop has been tinkered with enough (runs stable with Bioshock nVidia drivers + all the latest Vista updates - except the nvidia ones - + SharpE TD3... Plays COD4 online without any hitches, what more can I ask for?)... icon_rolleyes.gif

Temp's a bit high? Like I said, our M1210s are a bit quirky indeed... icon_rolleyes.gif

Added on December 31, 2007, 3:54 pmCurrently testing SharpE TD4, the latest release... Still as stable as ever, and eating only like 60-70% of the RAM explorer used to eat up... It's even Vista-friendly! thumbup.gif

Well, about OCing... Don't try if you don't want to potentially see your M1210 going up in smoke... Another thing is that it voids our precious CompleteCovers, and if you think "nah, they can't find out", they WILL when they come to your house to replace your burnt out motherboard and see the graphics chip scorched... sweat.gif

Besides, the potential increase in graphics performance is not that much to begin with (and yeah, I've tried)... The 7400 isn't known for its overclockability... 7900s are a different story though... sweat.gif

Ladies and gentlemen, some breaking news (or rather, heart-breaking news)... sweat.gif

My M1210 just simply died on me yesterday morning... It just refuses to start up, not even into the "Dell" BIOS POST screen... blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

Which leads me to conclude that my motherboard's probably fried golden... shocking.gif shocking.gif shocking.gif

While that is a cause of much sorrow in itself, it DOES give me a good opportunity to experience the much vaunted "Dell Service" by myself, to see if the truth lives up to all the hype... thumbup.gif

Currently making due with my trusty rock solid Fujitsu C2220 (now I know why the huge darned obsolete Fuji-Tan was soooo expensive - it was an RM6500 Pentium4 lappy at the time when even Centrino Acers went for a few thousand cheaper... and it's probably outliving those Acers as we speak), and thus will report any and all going ons in terms of my Expee-Tan's repair and service... thumbup.gif

I just sent my trusty SA an email a while back... Lets see how fast they are able to respond... whistling.gif

And while they're taking their sweet, sweet time (don't blame them, it's the weekends for Pete's sake), I'm getting myself a SATA 2.5inch HDD enclosure in a bid to rescue (and at the same time, create a long overdue backup of) the precious data still left inside my Expee-Tan's HDD... thumbup.gif

Provided the HDD didn't crash along with the motherboard (or whatever else that crashed inside my Expee-Tan)... sweat.gif

And to derred, does this make us lemon buddies now? sweat.gif

For the rest of us, this is why CompleteCover (and more importantly, regular data backup) is so important... Now lets see if the CC was worth the investment... thumbup.gif

Darned... CES... Do you have access or is it free for public consumption? If you can get there, snap me a whole bunch of gadget pics, zip em up and mail em to me pretty please?

LYN's most probably not crazy enough to send their lone freelance intern out to the US to cover CES to begin with (although I never give up praying), so a bunch of pics from the scene should help ease the pain (of a tech writer who can't reach CES - or CEBIT - even if he tried)... rolleyes.gif

@Eiraku and unknowndevices,

damn I wish I am at Vegas now to cover it up. I damn wish I could be there for only an hour (one specific hour each day which Alienware will let people TRY their brand new m15x laptop). Some of my friends were there for vacation and trust me, they have no interest about CES (I bet they don't even know what is CES). I checked back my pocket and pfftt, no luck visit CES this year. Plus I just spent couple of hard earns on tour just few days ago. Sorry if I did gave some empty hope to you guys.

I am indeed waiting for CES which Alienware will announce their new lines. There is some ups and downs that my m9700 went dead on me although it only took few months of ownership. Good thing I don't have to spend anything for the new upcoming LAPTOP and bad thing I don't have laptop for now.

I was planning to prepare it with some "out-of-the-box" benchmarks and stuff, but I could see a reason I wouldn't be doing that since I think I will be busy by the time the laptop reaches me. But we'll see. Maybe I should prepare now or maybe by the time the laptop reaches me, shouldn't I?

at Eiraku, hang in there mate. At least you got backup system to work with. I remembered I was without computer for like a month. Damn those hard times.

On the good side, those problems keep us intact and gathered which we haven't done for like a long time.

Ahh... Sorry for not replying for so long... The USB Wireless adapter on my Fujitsu was playing hide-n-seek with the net line here in my college, so got some problems even reaching the net... sweat.gif

But, that's old news... My M1210 is back from the dead, courtesy of a new motherboard and 2-sticks of brand spanking new SODIMMs... Truth is, as I thought, only my motherboard got fried - but they changed my RAM to new sticks anyway... thumbup.gif

I also found out the reason why my M1210's MB died off so quickly: A HUGE PIECE OF DUST WAS STUCK IN THE VENT NEAR THE FAN... doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif

So people, take some time to unscrew the keyboard off and clean the vents (check the manuals, I don't think it voids any warranties as it's actually necessary if you want to get to the 2nd SODIMM RAM slot... sweat.gif ), at least once in a while... thumbup.gif

Noted though, the fact that my M1210's new MB was a refurb, but you can't really expect a discontinued laptop to still have new parts now, can you?

And one other thing was that it took Dell around 2 weeks after my first "help me" email to my old SA (which was never replied, I think it got lost in the mail on the other side), and around 5 days from my "help me" request on Dell's support side for them to even get to repairing my XPS-tan... I don't know who's to blame (maybe it's just me), but that's sure a bit longer then "next business day"... shakehead.gif

But then, it's all working and dandy now, so let's just let that slide, for now... rolleyes.gif

Now back to over-working my M1210! *readies whip*
