Guys I have question on getting the right train pass. I'll be visiting Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara and going to Shirakawago as well. I read that there's this pass called JR West Kansai Hokuriku Area pass that can cover all these. Is it worth getting this pass, or should I get a cheaper pass that only covers Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nara, and buy separate train ticket to Kanazawa (and then bus to Shirakawago)? Or are there other options?
I will be there for 9 days. My initial plan was to get the 7 days west kansai hokuriku pass and then get osaka amazing pass for the remaining 2 days as we will just be in osaka area that time. is this the best option in terms of cost?

Just draft your itinerary first, then calculate all the fares and compare against the Pass. Normally, the savings is not much and you feel ‘forced’ to take certain routes or change your itinerary, even if there’s better alternatives

Returned from Kyoto-Osaka trip 3 weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed sightseeing at Kyoto, but less so at Osaka. The temple night illumination at Kyoto is definitely one of the main highlight of the trip. Kimono Forest is really a sight to behold at night when it is illuminated. Visited Kenrokuen Garden at Kanazawa and nice to see the yellow colour maple tree leaves. Credits to moderator @sweetpez and @regentcid for their kind suggestions and feedback. Next up February 2019 Shirakawago Winter Light Up. Can't wait.

I would like to know if Shirakawago is included, which train pass is the most cost efficient option?

I went first to Kyoto-Takayama-Toyama then back to Osaka. I only activated the pass when i wana go to Takayama from Kyoto. On the way from Kanazawa to Takayama, you can go to Shirakawago. In Toyama, you can opt to go Alpine route (not covered).

You dont need to stay at the resort. Just buy the lift pass/ticket. Usually all ski resort available with one-day pass or half-day pass. Also dont forget to rent ski equipment (ski, cloth, glove etc) if you didnt bring your own. Hope this help you
