Although I agree with you I'm starting to doubt it's failure. The reviews lately were mostly positive however they did not say anything about the RPG aspects of the game. So I'm thinking that It'll be a good FPS in it's on way, not sure about the RPG-ness of it though.
*
Last time I remembered, Oblivion was voted game of the year and got 9/10 ratings across 90% of reviews, despite the plethora of bugs, horrible level scalling, retarded storyline, smaller world than Morrowind, horrible voice acting, f*cked up animation as well as the biggest lie in the game industry that was Radiant AI.

Beth's PR machine is ruthless and powerful. You give its game a bad rep, it'll preclude you from future PR events, so US mags are always kissing their asses. Let's wait for the Europeans' say on this. For some reasons the french and the germans seemed to be the only ones familiar with the older fallouts, while the US game journalists are easily persuaded by gore gore action gore and more gore.

An online British friend told me that PCGamerUK awarded Fallout 3 a 90%.

I'll just quote the highlights that he told me:

QUOTE
Visual/Audio/Textual responses and nods to the originals.
Similar atmosphere
A weapon MADE FROM THE HANDS OF DEATHCLAWS

VATS is apparantly a tool that DOES make combat fasta! Since when you have a high weaponskill you'll headshot things and keep going.

Gore.

No more persuasion mini game ala Oblivion

Dogmeat

Some of the cons they listed were

The world can look a bit samey and barren
Feels like there are too many enemies in the wilderness

Washington DC is a fragmented set of loaded areas rather than one smooth one like the Wasteland (though all towns operate like Oblivion)

They of course claim diehard fans of Fallout will probably dislike it but people willing to go with it will enjoy it.

Then again they said the same thing for their Deus Ex 3 preview.

It's like they say, another man's meat is another man's poison.

I'm guessing most Fallout 1/2 diehards will loathe this game to it's core. But I think that this game is going to be enjoyed overall by everyone else.

Well, the thing I don't like about what they say from the reviews is that all the parts of what I really care about are not really touched on.

Freeform methods of finishing quests? How's the leveling system? Need more explanation on combat beyond ZOMG VATS FAST and also how the FPS part worked out, etc.

I'm playing it just for the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Don't know exactly how I'm gonna cope with all the flaws without modding tools hehehe

If there's any modding tools that takes away Agility and Perception (or at least not have them affect my chances to hit and damage output), then it'll be pretty fun. It'll be like STALKER FPS with more elaborate quest system (which STALKER didn't have). That'd rock. Too bad Beth had to turn Fallout 3 into an FPS. Had they done a pure FPS, it would have been much better.

IMO the only people that give good and deep reviews are the guys from Gamespot. I'm just waiting for their article.

On the side note, does anyone know when does the pirated version for games like these to hit the shelves?

The problem with that is...what main skew will the review be in? I find the console editors and PC editors have very different perspectives.

IGN PC editorial is actually quite good(as opposed to the horrid console guys). Gamespot some of the young ones are not too bad as well. Eurogamer is another one. A UK site which are quite strict in their scoring. Good PC editors too.

If you dont mind using translator then Gamestar.de is perhaps the best site for very deep review. Their reviews are quite long with many inputs from different editors.

Again the question should be which skew will these reviews be based on. While the game may not differ in terms of actual game, do you really want a consolised RPG on a PC?

I wouldn't mind playing a consolised RPG. I mean, check out Mass Effect, It's frigin awesome. Anyways there's one thing that I'm still quite worried about Fallout 3. Does anyone know how are the graphics going to be? If it's all pixelized and filled with shit-ugly NPCs then that's going to be a big turn-off.

I'm hoping for Bioshock graphics biggrin.gif But that's probably asking for too much, judging by the gameplay trailers.

Thoughts on this?

IGN always gives good rating for "innovative" games : Bioshock as GOY 2007 (Charles Onyet is the toughest reviewer)
Gamespot normally check on the graphics & gameplay : Crysis as GOY 2007 (zero toleration on bugs but admiration for addictive game)
Gamespy as it said multiplayer was the core element : COD 4 as GOY 2007 (they always have something to criticise)

If you want a detailed review i always check worthplaying which normally available in metacritic after few weeks.

Two more nice articles for you guys:

Fallout from the eyes of a JRPG player

Fallout 180 (Conversion to the religion)

QUOTE
Our first Fallout conversation was a disaster. Few students had posted on the forum as I had asked them to, and it was obvious that almost no one had devoted much time to playing. They basically tried the game, got frustrated, threw up their hands, and walked away. Our midterm break began the following day, so I told them I expected them to continue playing over the break, be resourceful, roll up their sleeves, and figure it out. "Somewhere in there," I assured them, "is the best RPG you will play this semester. If you dig harder to find it, I promise you will thank me." A bit of hyperbole, perhaps, but I meant it.

(...)

Suddenly, they got Fallout. They grokked the mechanics and embraced the non-linear gameplay. They made peace with uncertainty. But more importantly, they built a relationship with the character and the offbeat but perilous world.

(...)

And so we met again this morning. After a long and productive conversation I asked them how they were feeling about Fallout 3. "They're totally gonna screw up that game," said one student. "They're gonna say shoot this guy in the eyeball, like they're giving you all these choices, but you know they're gonna make it run and gun. You're gonna be running around blowing stuff up, and all the shooter players are gonna love it. But it won't be Fallout. I promise you. It won't be Fallout." "It looks pretty amazing," observed another, "and it should be fun. But yeah, it probably won't be Fallout."

Among the zealous converts, Fallout traditions die hard.
