Well, people that are familiar with both the old Fallouts (Black Isle I believe) and Bethesda's would be well aware that Fallout 3 is shaping up to be FAllout 3 in name only. So that's a bummer.

Even the graphics look wonky, and I thought at least Bethesda would do good there. But the environments tend to be plain and boring. sad.gif

Will still check it out when released and see fan reactions though.

Turn based looks slow though. All sorts of drawn out animations.

Hope there's a way to speed it up or turn it off.

I feel Bethesda actually shot themselves in the foot by going for both turn based and FPS.

A decent FPS player should be able to never miss (considering how slow and stupid the enemies seem to be) which makes turn based useless. UNLESS, of course, even when shooting directly, there is a chance to miss, in which case, why bother with FPS mode?

That's what my thoughts and the videos (that I've seen) show me anyway.

RPGs in full FPS glory?

Deus EX, baby. System Shock 2, to a lesser extent.

I disagree, it doesn't look like it plays like it will play like any other FPS.

It's too slow for that.

I dunno, it seems like Beth are purposely toning that aspect down. I can't remember what was it they toned down or removed though, but I heard it was big news. Was it Perks, maybe?

Hmm.

I can't remember. Something to do with character creation, where they left out something.

...maybe I'm remembering it wrong. sad.gif

An online British friend told me that PCGamerUK awarded Fallout 3 a 90%.

I'll just quote the highlights that he told me:

QUOTE
Visual/Audio/Textual responses and nods to the originals.
Similar atmosphere
A weapon MADE FROM THE HANDS OF DEATHCLAWS

VATS is apparantly a tool that DOES make combat fasta! Since when you have a high weaponskill you'll headshot things and keep going.

Gore.

No more persuasion mini game ala Oblivion

Dogmeat

Some of the cons they listed were

The world can look a bit samey and barren
Feels like there are too many enemies in the wilderness

Washington DC is a fragmented set of loaded areas rather than one smooth one like the Wasteland (though all towns operate like Oblivion)

They of course claim diehard fans of Fallout will probably dislike it but people willing to go with it will enjoy it.

Then again they said the same thing for their Deus Ex 3 preview.

Well, the thing I don't like about what they say from the reviews is that all the parts of what I really care about are not really touched on.

Freeform methods of finishing quests? How's the leveling system? Need more explanation on combat beyond ZOMG VATS FAST and also how the FPS part worked out, etc.

Just to say about the high reviews, journalism in video games isn't really at a good standard. People can be bought out. I remember some dude saying Kane and Lynch was shit on like...Gamespot I think, and he was fired soon after because Eidos complained.

So yeah. Not saying all reviewers and reviews are like that, but just be wary.

I personally ignore the scores and just read the thing and look out for concrete things. Less of "It feels like you're in an apocalyptic world" and more of the "The combat system uses a combination of AP, hit percentages and..." parts.

Well, I don't even read game reviews either, but a lot of people hype games up according to review scores, which are ridiculously skewed.

In terms of other great RPGs, everyone should check out more indy stuff. Eschalon Book 1 is pretty dope. Arcanum 5 and Geneforge 4...Gorki 17 is brutal.

Arcanum 5? I never realized Arcanum had so many sequels...

Ah, I miswrote.

I wasn't thinking of Acarnum.

I meant Avernum 5.

...THEY SOUND THE SAME DAMMIT.

VATS also allows you to attack specific body parts like the head or torso. You'll get bored of it after a dozen times of using it.

It also looks incredibly ridiculous to shoot a mofo 32 times in the head for him to die. FPS RPG BAH!!!

P/S - And why the fark did Bethsoft removed the groin and eyes VATS option. Now I can't shoot rats in the groin...ass
*
So...my fears have come true? The FPS part isn't action packed enough to be fun, and VATS is like the old Fallout system, but too slow and repetitive?

I wonder why people would even think FO3 is a good game.

OMG, this game totally rocks! It has more than 200 endings!!!

Well sorry lar, it has only FOUR f***ing endings.

Good Ending
Coward Ending
Bad Ending
Corrupt Ending
*
Sounds like Star Ocean 2's ZOMG 80 ENDINGS.

Most are just small variations depending on what you did throughout the game, not so much an ending per se but more like slightly different scenes depending on small decisions made in the game.

If you give Fallout 3 a rating of 3 out of 10, then how about other games like hellgate london 0 perhaps ?
Yes.

User friendly does not necessarily mean easy game though. Just saying.

There're lots of games that're easy to pick up but hard to finish. Just ask any SHMUP fan. Or Metal Slug.

Avernum 5
Mount & Blade

Baldur's Gate wasn't particularly good. >_>
