I don't understand how people can accept that. I've always advocated shooting missiles before (or at least just after) they enter one's airspace.

There's always a danger of the missile self-destructing (accidentally or deliberately) or malfunctioning over the country and still causing damage, whether or not it was actually aimed at the country. Also, you don't know if there's a secret EMP device, dirty bomb or chemical/biological agent dispenser on top of one of those missiles, things that don't require the missile to impact to cause damage.

well NK did mention intercepting the missile = declaration of war against them

i think the military top guns all did their calculations and deemed it to be much better to let it go over than risking open warfare, esp since they reckon that NK is just as usual, more bark than bite

though, Patriot batteries may not have the range or capability to properly intercept the missile. nobody really knows hmm.gif

NSF dies in vehicular mishap at Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Australia

SINGAPORE: A 21-year-old Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) full-time National Serviceman died after he was involved in a vehicular mishap at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area in Queensland, Australia at around 6.15pm on Friday (Sep 15).

3rd Sergeant (3SG) Chan Hiang Cheng Gavin, a Vehicle Commander from 41st Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment, was travelling in a Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicle as part of an exercise when the incident happened, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a statement.

An SAF medic commenced resuscitation efforts on 3SG Chan, who was unconscious at the time. He was evacuated via a helicopter to Rockhampton Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at around 10.36pm.

A safety pause on training in Shoalwater Bay Training Area has taken effect, and an investigation of the incident is ongoing, MINDEF said.
"The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late serviceman and are assisting the family in this time of grief," the statement added.

How Do Large Caliber Naval Guns Work?

The 8"/55 caliber gun (spoken "eight-inch-fifty-five-caliber") formed the main battery of United States Navy heavy cruisers and two early aircraft carriers. United States naval gun terminology indicates the gun barrel had an internal diameter of 8 inches (203 mm), and the barrel was 55 calibers long (barrel length is 8 inch × 55 = 440 inches or 36.6 feet or 11 meters).

These built-up guns weighed about 30 tons including a liner, tube, jacket, and five hoops. A down-swing Welin breech block was closed by compressed air from the gas ejector system. Loading with two silk bags each containing 45-pounds (20 kg) of smokeless powder gave a 260-pound (120 kg) projectile a velocity of 2800 feet per second (850 m/s). Range was 18 miles 31,860 yd (29,130 m) at the maximum elevation of 41 degrees. One of USS Louisville's main gun turrets damaged from kamikaze on January 5, 1945 was removed and taken to the Nevada Test Site and converted into a rotating radiation detector, to collect data on nuclear tests.

Brigadier-General Toh Choon Siang assume command of 11th Infantry Brigade

user posted image
Brigadier-General Toh Choon Siang ® receives the commander's baton from outgoing 11th Infantry Brigade commander Brigadier-General Abdul Kadir Ahmad in the presence of the 4th Infantry Division commander, Major-General Zakaria Yadi

Brigadier-General Toh Choon Siang,58, assumes command of the 11th Infantry Brigade based at Sungai Buloh, Selangor.

It is also significant as a perfect Malaysia Day (Sept 16) gift for the diminutive, Johor-born officer who is the first Chinese to command the strategic brigade responsible for the defence of Selangor and the federal administrative capital of Putrajaya.

Looking back, Toh has no regrets in boldly quitting secondary school prematurely in 1977, to perform national service.

“This command is a great honour for me, especially for my late father who himself had served the nation in two capacities.

“So did my three elder brothers who did military service during the trying times of the communist insurgency and Emergency period (in the 60s and 70s),” said Toh, a full-blooded ranger.

On Sept 6, he replaced Brig Gen Abdul Kadir Ahmad, who has opted for early retirement, as the brigade’s 21st commander.

Toh was previously the senior director of the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security’s (MiDAS) Blue Ocean Strategy Centre since May 2014.

Toh’s father is Robert Toh Boon Hock who had served the British Royal Air Force during the Japanese Occupation of Malaya, and when the war ended joined the Royal Malaysian Customs Department until his retirement in 1976.

His eldest brother Cdr (Rtd) Toh Tiap Keng served the Royal Malaysian Navy for 33 years, while his two elder brothers Capt (Rtd) Toh Choon Hong and Flight Sgt (Rtd) Toh Choon Kooi both served the Royal Malaysian Air Force for 25 years.
