QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Sep 15 2017, 10:26 AM) A lot of multinational european military forces formed before, but they just don't seem to work. Probably Germany said "screw that" and starts assembling military units of allied countries into the Bundeswehr itself. again, it is EU integration, and as you pointed out, nothing new to the Bundeswehr. unlike most multinational forces which tend to be a hodgepodge of units, the EU (ideally) really want to form combined units with complementary capabilities, rationalised procurement and training pipelines, etc etc. Heck, the Dutch military is nearly fully absorbed by the Bundeswehr that it only has 1 brigade left in its own army (the 13th Light Brigade) from the original 3; the 43rd Mechanized Brigade and the 11th Airmobile Brigade was absorbed into the Bundeswehr back in 2016 and 2014, respectively. That means literally 2/3 of the Dutch army is under German control. WTF. realistically though, budgets are shrinking, commitment is weak and the UK military is stuck in the weird limbo of being a very close, important and capable European nation (especially now with the carriers, P-8s and F-35s coming in) who is emphatiically not a European Union member QUOTE(Fat & Fluffy @ Sep 13 2017, 02:55 PM) well that was a particularly uninformative calling A400M a "white elephant" is pretty strong. remind me again when was the last time the entire RSAF fired ordnance in anger? |

QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Sep 15 2017, 01:05 PM) calling A400M a "white elephant" is pretty strong. remind me again when was the last time the entire RSAF fired ordnance in anger? Malaysia nabs three terror suspects in separate raids ![]() Malaysia has arrested three suspected terrorists, among them a 21-year-old man who said he was taught by top ISIS militants to make explosives to be used in attacks on non-Muslim places of worship. All three are Malaysians. National police chief Mohamad Fuzi Harun said yesterday that the unemployed man admitted he had received instructions from Malaysia's most-wanted terrorist Mahmud Ahmad and a Saudi Arabian bomb-making expert on how to make improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on a large scale. "He was arrested in Bagan Serai, Perak, on Sept 8, and has links with Al-Qaeda and Abu Sayyaf militants," Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi said. "We believe he has sworn allegiance to ISIS and is believed to have joined the terror group since early this year. He has attempted to make three bombs three times." In addition to making IEDs, the suspect had been ordered to acquire a pistol, M-16 and AK-47 rifles, and a hand grenade from a neighbouring country for the purpose of launching attacks on non-Muslim places of worship in Malaysia. "We seized bomb-making chemicals at the suspect's house," Mr Mohamad Fuzi said. In a separate raid, counter-terrorism officers arrested a 38-year-old chendol seller in Melaka on Sunday for producing Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) flags and promoting the terror group. The man had planned to join the ISIS faction in the southern Philippines and in Rakhine, Myanmar, said Mr Mohamad Fuzi. Also on Sunday, the counter-terrorism unit arrested a 41-year-old bus driver in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, who had plans to travel to Syria to join ISIS later this year. Before the latest arrests, the Malaysian authorities had put 332 Malaysians and foreigners behind bars since 2013, as Malaysia battles supporters and sympathisers of ISIS and its affiliates. Among those arrested were army personnel and policemen, as well as women who wanted to travel to Syria to join ISIS. The Malaysian authorities also detained 19 suspected terrorists, including eight Abu Sayyaf militants, in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Kelantan and Johor in a series of swoops between July 4 and Aug 30. The suspects comprised eight Malaysians and 11 foreigners from Bangladesh, the Maldives, Iraq, Palestine, the Philippines and Indonesia. Malaysia attracts tens of thousands of students from Muslim countries as well as migrant workers seeking higher pay, and they were among those who have been arrested in recent years. The country's first terrorist attack took place in June last year, when a grenade was lobbed into a nightclub in Puchong, Selangor, by two men on a motorcycle. Eight people were injured in the attack. The two men have since been sentenced to 25 years in jail. Meanwhile, there are more than 53 Malaysians fighting alongside ISIS in Syria and at least 28 others in the Philippines. |

QUOTE Air Force pushing for acquisition of Air Defense System September 14, 2017 Ruben Santos The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is pushing forward with their Ground Based Air Defense System (GBADS) project proposal, MaxDefense Philippines said. MaxDefense said the GBADS acquisition project will be pushed under the Second Horizon of Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program (RAFPMP) established by Republic Act No. 10349. It added that among the possible project bidders are Israeli Rafael Advanced Defense Systems with its Surface-to-air Python and Derby (SPYDER) Medium Range; German Diehl Defence with IRIS-T Surface-Launched; Korean LIGNex1 with KM surface-to-air missile (SAM); Norwegian Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace with NASAMS developed with Raytheon; and European MBDA with Land Ceptor. The Department of National Defense (DND) previously said that under the next phase of military modernization “we will pursue the development and enhancement of our territorial defense capability by acquiring major defense assets such as, but not limited to, radars, fighter aircraft, frigates, patrol boats, attack and utility helicopters, missile systems, and unmanned aerial systems.” The Second Horizon will run from 2018 to 2022. It will be followed by Third Horizon which will start 2023 and will end in 2028. https://www.update.ph/2017/09/air-force-pus...se-system/20752 |

![]() This would probably only be useful for gunboats (i.e for shore bombardments). The low velocity and high arc of a mortar shell would be useless to use on a rapidly-moving naval target. So no, this would be useful in some applications only, not as a general-purpose naval gun. This post has been edited by MilitaryMadness: Sep 15 2017, 12:59 PM |

QUOTE(KLboy92 @ Sep 15 2017, 01:20 PM) Might have decided not to engage considering the trajectory and possibility of debris causing deaths I don't understand how people can accept that. I've always advocated shooting missiles before (or at least just after) they enter one's airspace. There's always a danger of the missile self-destructing (accidentally or deliberately) or malfunctioning over the country and still causing damage, whether or not it was actually aimed at the country. Also, you don't know if there's a secret EMP device, dirty bomb or chemical/biological agent dispenser on top of one of those missiles, things that don't require the missile to impact to cause damage. |

QUOTE(TechSuper @ Sep 15 2017, 04:16 PM) it's main purpose is for naval bombardment. suitable for littoral states which has many islands. it's fast, agile, can go where the water is shallow, even rivers. Someone earlier asked if this can be installed on the LMS.Big difference though, between a naval patrol boat (like the LMS) and a gunboat designed specifically for shore bombardment. QUOTE Wiki: A gunboat is a naval watercraft designed for the express purpose of carrying one or more guns to bombard coastal targets, as opposed to those military craft designed for naval warfare. |
