What will it take to defeat terror?

The war on terror is essentially never-ending, because the terrorists' mission is never-ending: they wish to destroy the Western system of governance. Its a bit like asking "what will it take to defeat crime".

Saudi Arabia wanted an AV-8 for testing. They also visited the Denel line. Maybe will buy, probably not unless there's some political reason.

EU Anschluss perhaps

A more integrated EU Corps has always been the objective. Only because UK refused to be more integrated did they have the system of building groups around a core unit, either UK, French or German.

Why won't people just accept it's a 40-year old obsolete design and design something new? laugh.gif

kek i was wrong

still, to go for nemo instead of regular 120mm mortar like in adnan is really good news. Having more 120mm mortar carrier is good enuf but to have a turreted mortar is really icing on cake
*
I do not think AV-8 uses NEMO, which is a Finnish weapon. AV-8 should be using the Thales 2R2M, seen here on Piranha, Centauro and of course Adnan

QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Sep 15 2017, 10:26 AM)
A lot of multinational european military forces formed before, but they just don't seem to work. Probably Germany said "screw that" and starts assembling military units of allied countries into  the Bundeswehr itself.

Heck, the Dutch military is nearly fully absorbed by the Bundeswehr that it only has 1 brigade left in its own army (the 13th Light Brigade) from the original 3; the 43rd Mechanized Brigade and the 11th Airmobile Brigade was absorbed into the Bundeswehr back in 2016 and 2014, respectively. That means literally 2/3 of the Dutch army is under German control. WTF. laugh.gif
*
again, it is EU integration, and as you pointed out, nothing new to the Bundeswehr. unlike most multinational forces which tend to be a hodgepodge of units, the EU (ideally) really want to form combined units with complementary capabilities, rationalised procurement and training pipelines, etc etc.

realistically though, budgets are shrinking, commitment is weak and the UK military is stuck in the weird limbo of being a very close, important and capable European nation (especially now with the carriers, P-8s and F-35s coming in) who is emphatiically not a European Union member laugh.gif

I don't understand how people can accept that. I've always advocated shooting missiles before (or at least just after) they enter one's airspace.

There's always a danger of the missile self-destructing (accidentally or deliberately) or malfunctioning over the country and still causing damage, whether or not it was actually aimed at the country. Also, you don't know if there's a secret EMP device, dirty bomb or chemical/biological agent dispenser on top of one of those missiles, things that don't require the missile to impact to cause damage.

Bizarrely, in these older tanks the loader's position is on the right side of the turret (thus on the right side of the main gun), meaning if the loader is not left-handed the main gun-loading process is awkward & tiring as hell as he would have to operate the breech and ram in the shell home with his left hand/arm.

Certainly not. Not with only 16 point-defence MICA on board. But Gowind is not designed to face such fire anyway - not even Singkie Formidable would do wel. IMHO it would take an advanced AA ship like Burke or Type 45 to knock down all those missiles, and the outcome would not be certain at all. But mind you naval warfare is far from just throwing more missiles at the other guy.

well 16 mica plus ciws maybe can kowtim 10 ASM...lel..the rest GG liao

i think thats vietnam strategy anyway with china ships...spam and forget..hahah
*
Standard doctrine is to fire 2 missiles at each incoming missile. 16 MICA means maximum 8 shot down in a 'perfect' battle. But a ship will only have less than 2 minutes to detect, react and defend itself at 16 sea-skimmers coming from the horizon at 1000kph...

Yeah Harpoon, Exocet and Kh35 are basically fire and forget missiles. The downside is that they are likely to lock on to other targets, especially when dealing with semi-stealth ships like Gowind or Formidable, and especially in these crowded waters - bad news for cargo ships and fishing boats as well as the attacker.

But the biggest question as pointed out above is, who gets a clear picture of the enemy first...

well thats very weird & shameful

what happened to all those UK army praise towards their broncos during its initial operation in afghanistan?
*
Some of these commentators have agendas. I followed UK defence issues closely for past couple of years. Tabloids like Sun or especially Daily Mail will drill in on some small thing and blow it out of proportion.

For example, the Royal Marines were kept in Afghanistan precisely because their Broncos were so useful, otherwise they would have been kicked out as land ops is totally out of their remit. Almost every gear the NATO forces used in Kuwait, Afghan, Iraq etc have temperature and sand issue, its a known downside of bringing their Cold War-optimised equipment to desert environment. That's why Arab variants of the same hardware have lots of modifications after all.

Another example is the hoo-ha kicked up over HMS Ocean being sold off. Ocean is the flagship yes but she is at the absolute end of her useful life as she is built to commercial standards. QE is going to replace her anyway. Its all in the plans. Just that the tabloids want to make a fuss... last week they complained the Broncos are being sold off, this week they complain its defective doh.gif

its them british they will keep using it until the end their useful life even if it would give them thousands of problems biggrin.gif its one of their "keep calm and move on" creed
the broncos were made for a very specific mission profile and the royal marines will go back to using their old vikings albeit with a more updated armor protection
*
Not with Ocean, internally its practically falling apart, they bought it to close the flat-top gap these few years and they will stick to it. QE will be available shortly anyway.

Lol I didn't know... patutlah doh.gif

Viking actually has a great combat record, mainly cause their tracks allowed them to off-road and avoid IEDs where the MRAPs couldn't. Up-armouring them would have been pointless as it would remove that advantage.

CANNED PAPPADAM?! laugh.gif

Those round things are not cans, they are paper packages of uncooked pappadams. The uncooked papadam look like below pic, round thin pieces of dough about the square area of a small tuna can and the texture of chapati.

Its actually super easy to cook over open flame, technically just put it on a gas ring will do. I am paranoid over getting gas in my food tho so I do it on a pan. All that happens is that it gets blistered and crunchy, or puffed up, within a minute or so.

Doesn't take much to keep in stock as Class B rations and little effort to cook, certainly would be a cheap morale boost thumbup.gif
