Looking for advice. Want to change laptop HDD to SSD, which one of the Samsung should I get, 850 or 860? Initially thinking of the 960 but it is not sata. Today saw the 860 sata 3 250gb selling for RM389 on lazada.

too pricey already…viewnet only selling rm279 for 250gb Samsung 860 evo…

Try to avoid those super cheap SSDs. It does not have DRAM cache. Any heavy workload will cause it to stutter and it is worse than hard disk.

SSDs at around Crucial MX500 or Samsung 860 Evo price range are good.

I think the Crucial MX500 has something called "partial power loss protection" which Samsung 860 EVO doesn't have. In this case, would the Crucial MX500 be a better choice? Especially since it's also quite a bit cheaper.

Samsung is faster. It is more expensive though. MX500 isnt far behind.

At today's prices, Samsung dropped a lot.

There is also this:
https://shopee.com.my/Intel%C2%AE-SSD-535-S...6936.1391207027

MLC NAND can handle more writes.

Samsung faster is pointless when speed capped by Sata 3. I think samsung only be useful for Nvme drive.

I think as long as got DRAM with a decent controller we should be fine. Kingston UV500 is best pricing now @ RM350+ for 480GB or crucial MX500/500GB @ RM370

---------------------------

I plan to get 1 SSD for non-ACHI Sata 2 old PC to use as OS drive+pagefile (only 4GB system ram). Anyone know what brand offer best price/GB? speed wont matter because on sata 2.

No doubt the Crucial and Samsung SSDs are the way to go as the primary drive for OS. Those budgets one can be used for running games or apps.

I do a lot of remux, encodes and initial torrent on da 1tb drives of mx500 and mx300
mainly tv shows/movie web dl

so the prep on da script is especially on tv shows.. download, unrar, remux, save on a HDD, plex refresh.
movie web-dl are same except theres no unrar...

on tv shows below 1gb.. not much diff between both.
however above 1gb.. its slower on mx500.. initiall mx500 suppose to be my web-dl movie drive.. but seeing this.. i made it as tvshow drive.
tested few times already. even tested on the same port the mx 300 ( currently mx300 handling movie web-dl and mx500 on tvshows) before mx300 was handling both.

how much slower..
hmm for tvshows say around 1.2gb.. on my system to do the download (20-30 sec) with that script running 1min on mx300..
mx500 can sometimes end up 2 mins...
movies this takes a bit longer because of the reencode of the ac3 move for dual track AAC/AC3 Passthrough.. so say a 4.5gb movie.. mx300 to do the whole thing download ( 2 min) ( remux, audio encode etc.. ) mx 300 3 min.. mx 500 4 min...

its always 30sec to 1 min longer.

Looks like Marvell controller on MX300 is better. By the way, Crucial has Storage Executive. It has Momentum Cache feature. There are some apps like Primocache and SSDKeeper too.

Wah, you write so much on SSD. Thats a lot of wear. I ban videos on my SSDs. Purely WD Red Pro and Surveillance disks on videos for me.

Thats up to you. Writes wears out SSD for me. If I want it, I'll do it on SSD like Samsung Pro or Intel 530/535.

yeah, I was look for cheaper other than A400/Sandisk SSD plus. Seems both of them is the cheapest so far.

the sata 2 rig does not even support ACHI, unlikely will heavy load the drawless SSD due to this. I figure despite the handicap the access time is still much better than a latest top speed HDD.

i installed a 1st gen Intel 40GB SSD in my living room HTPC which has the basic G31 mobo with Q9300 cpu, the responsiveness is night and day difference compared to hdd, you won't regret it!
