if you really wanted a nvme ssd, i suggest to get something that have pci-e 3.0 4x, with dram, have 3d-tlc or mlc nand (currently already at 64-layer), 5-year or more warranty, and with capacity at least 480gb range. usually a good nvme ssd can last for a long long time for normal users. for nand-based ssds, it's always good to plan for free space for over provisioning (10% or more of the total capacity), so that it helps to maintain performance.

the above is what i think more practical if you wanted to have the better user experience in the long run. (as os drive, plus some common applications that you use most frequently)

alternatively, just go for large capacity sata ssds. this is because for normal use, you will not be able to make full use of a nvme ssd actually.
*

still too expensive.

I think I wait them drop to RM170-250 range first

oh. you might need to wait for a while for this to happen. it's fine, because this means you don't need it as much as we do smile.gif
*

it depends on the type of work or computer. I have a 128GB Samsung 840 pro SSD on my laptop. I definately needed that on that laptop for instant on/off. 5400rpm 2.5 laptop hdd is so much slower than desktop 7200rpm ones. So SSD is a must here

but on desktop... yup you are right, here I really dont need that much. I keep my windows startup footprint small, so my PC got decent boot time. It is slower than SSD, but not totally unbearable

recently I bought 2TB toshiba HDD and less than half month I filled up 700GB already haha doh.gif no way SSD can keep me happy.

I think I might end up buying 3TB HDD year end again -.-

but still if 400GB-500GB drop till that price range I will get one.

guys, is SSD failure rate that high? if i use SSD for torrent, copying and deleting frequently, will it die within 1 year? i was looking at a sandisk SSD when this problem pops up in my mind... hmm.gif
*

lol torrent, one of the fastest way to kill SSD.

use HDD, buy a RM150 HDD torrent on that.

What is the best SSD for a computer with SATA2 connector only. 300Mbps.

Usage = windows OS + virtual memory (yes this computer got 4GB RAM only, so it will hit a lot of virtual memory writing)

So basically I want a SSD that is Slow(because sata2), but super reliable and super cheap.

'super reliable' doesn't work together with 'super cheap' for ssds in general. for your usage, you should get something with 3d-tlc nand.
*

the price factor of SSD come from 3 factors, Speed, reliable, Size.

I am looking for SSD that trade away speed for reliable and size since it is gonna plug into Sata 2 laugh.gif

for Sata 2 on an old win 7 computer that do not support ACHI. Only Sata 2 enchance mode.

is it recomend to buy SSD for OS drive + pagefile? (4GB RAM, so need pagefile)

A400 vs UV500 whats the diff? Is it good to get 120GB? or need minimum 240GB to be reliable?

Hi guys,

I am using this motherboard and the support list stated that they supported 950 PRO. Do you think Samsung 970 PRO compatible? Wanted to get 1 for main OS drive.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-H17...-10#support-doc

Another question. If i get a new SSD, I just clone my old drive to the new SSD. Should be no issue right?

Thanks for the info.
*

should be no issue, I just clone from my Sata 2 port 80GB windows 10 OS HDD from MBR to GPT Sata 3 port 80GB Kingston UV500 SSD.

I got more change than you. I clone/move from sata_2+HDD+MBR into Sata_3+GPT_SSD. rclxms.gif

Which software cloning you use ?
*

EASEUS todo backup for cloning. for converting windows 10 MBR to GPT without data loss, use the build-in tool in windows 10 MBR2GPT.exe

woah i just know this..
good sharing!
btw, if vice versa still no data loss? (gpt to mbr)
*

the build in is only for 1 way trip. MBR to GPT.

btw, why u need to go back to old MBR system? Computer older than 8yrs only do not support GPT windows booting. Even then if your computer is 8+yrs old, you only need to use MBR to boot windows 7. Any computer use windows 7 support GPT as secondary storage.

There is no reason to stuck with MBR.

10% SST on Hard Disk. GG time to buy SSD before u regret.
*

10% means for 480GB is about RM30-40

but SSD is told to be crash further.

So wanna buy parts, i think buy computer parts that seldom drop price for example, Monitor, Speaker, mouse/keyboard, cpu cooler, casing, PSU. those things.

your mobo has sata2 ports, so it should be fine (check also in bios settings if it support ahci)
*

that mobo got RAID, it should support AHCI.

If No support AHCI + Sata2 = better off go HDD. laugh.gif HDD already hit 210MB/s, compared to 300MB/s Sata 2 max bandwidth. You are not losing much.

Tho the seek time on SSD is what makes the huge different.

Any recommendation for a cheap budget ssd? Budget around RM100. Want to upgrade my girlfriend's 2006 mac pro.

I have a spare 250GB 2.5 Samsung 850 as I've upgraded to a nvme ssd in my mac pro but no way I'm giving that haha

Have 2 models in mind. Kingston A400 or the Lite-on MU3. Both 120GB, both under RM100
EDIT: Mac pro as in the tower mac pro. It'll run on sata 2
*

sata 2, got AHCI? if no ACHI that SSD will be slow on sata 2. Probably 50Mib/s faster than a HDD. haha

Just bought the kingston ssd for RM90. Ok la cheap cheap give her haha
My 850 used to get 250MB/s writes and 260MB/s read on sata2. Basically maxing out the sata 2 bus
*

on that mac pro sata 2? btw, latest HDD can hit 180-210MB/s already.

u better double check got AHCI support or not. Without it, it will affect performance, although I am not sure how much it will affect.

Samsung is faster. It is more expensive though. MX500 isnt far behind.

At today's prices, Samsung dropped a lot.

There is also this:
https://shopee.com.my/Intel%C2%AE-SSD-535-S...6936.1391207027

MLC NAND can handle more writes.
*

Samsung faster is pointless when speed capped by Sata 3. I think samsung only be useful for Nvme drive.

I think as long as got DRAM with a decent controller we should be fine. Kingston UV500 is best pricing now @ RM350+ for 480GB or crucial MX500/500GB @ RM370

---------------------------

I plan to get 1 SSD for non-ACHI Sata 2 old PC to use as OS drive+pagefile (only 4GB system ram). Anyone know what brand offer best price/GB? speed wont matter because on sata 2.

he just need something for his old sata2 rig, it would be an improvement over hdd nonetheless.
*

yeah, I was look for cheaper other than A400/Sandisk SSD plus. Seems both of them is the cheapest so far.

the sata 2 rig does not even support ACHI, unlikely will heavy load the drawless SSD due to this. I figure despite the handicap the access time is still much better than a latest top speed HDD.

both of them is not the cheapest ssd yet…today shoppe offer 120gb/240gb pioneer ssd is at rm69/rm139 at 12noon…I managed grab 1 unit 240gb
*

the 240gb is not cheaper. You can get A400/SSD plus at those price range already.

for me to look away from those 2 model. 240GB from other brand need to be below RM120, 480GB need to be below RM220. I havent find one beat those 2 brands so far.

its ok to miss it, SSD is contantly dropping very fast anyway.

I was so wrong to rush to avoid SST back in June 2018, I purchased a UV500 480GB for RM355(thats was after lazada RM20 voucher).

Now the same thing with SST is selling for ~RM330. The better brand Crucial MX500 500GB is selling for RM320 -.-

Viewnet is on the roll here, Sandisk high end business class SSD X600 512GB sell for RM310 rclxub.gif (It is a Western Digital blue under different brand, or you can called it Sandisk Ultra with unlocked +12GB & 2 more years warranty)

Sandisk x600 512GB is rm349…not rm310…last week I walked in to their shop since they sell this product day 1, 512gb is no stock at all, so I only managed got 5pcs 256gb, then few days later their shoppe got put 5 units only…

-------------------

btw those who buying low end SSD for old PC/laptop especially sata 2, dont bother paying extra for Sandrisk SSD plus. It is actually worst than kingston.
https://www.hardwaresecrets.com/kingston-a4...gib-ssd-review/

I still got my RM20 lazada voucher, I think can buy at RM120 for 240GB ones.

If you are on sata 3, spend a little extra get dram SSD for ex. Kingston UV500, Sandisk X600, Crucial MX500. 480-512GB is priced about RM300-330.
