*
yeah thats y until now i regret buying nvme

its so dependent on
1. mobo bios
2. Firmware
3. driver
4. OS

any one can F it up.

NVMe ssd is getting cheaper nowadays
*
yeah atleast samsung puts a disclaimer whats the actual speed after the turbo boost ( initial)

but afaik nvme samsungs hasnt solved anything in windows patches yet

samsungs says MS fault MS says samsung. but intel nvme etc all no issue...

so thats that.

what happens.. during major updates like fall etc.. u get bsod. only way to update it without fresh install is.. clone to ssd/hdd.. update and clone back.

it's just terrible.
*
thats the thing.. its been there for years.. just google..

but nobody talked about it...

i came from z87 to x299..

cause in the x299 a friend of mine told me about this.

my 960pro/evo i am just using them now lol as storage for games and another one as os for stresstesting/overclocking OS.

will never use them as daily driver

u will even find this issues on laptops etc.. fallupdate etc etc.. all bsod.

i did a brief search just now. it might be fixed by ms. the good news started at page 4, https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/Wind...D-s/td-p/130851

the fix was said to be in w10 1803. it really took a long while.
*
doubt it..

this issue is not current.. its been there since the first major update of windows

MS said is samsung issue.. samsung says is MS.

since 950 already had this since 1511..

i will see it when 18xx is out but just like me wishing TM unifi to have 1gbps.. doubt it...

Hi guys,

Advice needed. I'm planning to make the leap to SSD from my 3.5 HDD. Currently have a 2015 z97 board with no M.2 slot.

Planning to buy Zotac's Sonix PCIe 480gb SSD as I have an extra PCIe x4 slot and it can be transferred to future builds. Thoughts??? It is RM 849 now, is the pricing decent?

Thanks.
*
check whether your board supports a bios with nvme boot drive.

if not get a custom mod bios.

btw wd black 512gb nvme u can it for rm799.. it does 3.4gb/s read 2.4gb/s write.
just get a pcie card adapter for it and you are good.

MX500 looks better from the reviews.

I got MX500 1TB. Its filled though.
*
I do a lot of remux, encodes and initial torrent on da 1tb drives of mx500 and mx300
mainly tv shows/movie web dl

so the prep on da script is especially on tv shows.. download, unrar, remux, save on a HDD, plex refresh.
movie web-dl are same except theres no unrar...

on tv shows below 1gb.. not much diff between both.
however above 1gb.. its slower on mx500.. initiall mx500 suppose to be my web-dl movie drive.. but seeing this.. i made it as tvshow drive.
tested few times already. even tested on the same port the mx 300 ( currently mx300 handling movie web-dl and mx500 on tvshows) before mx300 was handling both.

how much slower..
hmm for tvshows say around 1.2gb.. on my system to do the download (20-30 sec) with that script running 1min on mx300..
mx500 can sometimes end up 2 mins...
movies this takes a bit longer because of the reencode of the ac3 move for dual track AAC/AC3 Passthrough.. so say a 4.5gb movie.. mx300 to do the whole thing download ( 2 min) ( remux, audio encode etc.. ) mx 300 3 min.. mx 500 4 min...

its always 30sec to 1 min longer.

Looks like Marvell controller on MX300 is better. By the way, Crucial has Storage Executive. It has Momentum Cache feature. There are some apps like Primocache and SSDKeeper too.

Wah, you write so much on SSD. Thats a lot of wear. I ban videos on my SSDs. Purely WD Red Pro and Surveillance disks on videos for me.

too slow...

this dude.. by the time i finish that muxing etc.. already hit ratio upload ratio 2-3..

Afaik Viewnet = Convergent Distribution = Crucial distri... so...

btw, another amazing deal from Amazon

Samsung 860 EVO 1TB @ $128 USD: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078DPCY3...pldnSite=1&th=1
*
so dat usd 128+14.37 =142.36... current online shows 4.19.. but normally spread add another 2.5-3%... so 4.29475x142.36 = RM611.40..
not bad...

but i already sworn off from all samsung evo ssds. they are too gimmicky from ssd to nvme.

got da 11.11 sale for crucial 1tb..

so now sitting with 3x 1tb ssd mx300,mx500 x 2 and another 512gb x 2 mx100... feel like selling all and pay to get a 4tb ssd... furious.gif furious.gif

When I bought my MX500 at viewnet, I asked the staff about the warranty and was told they will only cover the 1st year.
They will however help you claim warranty after 1 year with a fee.
*
QUOTE(invisiblelim @ Nov 27 2018, 05:59 PM)
yes.. most of the shop is like that, usually I go claim myself unless like Samsung SSD need to go thru seller then no choice.
*
crucial dont bother the distro/shop..

btw isnt convergent owned by viewnet now.. they bought so many distros

just get the rma from SG and send it over.. ( they will fedex it back to u)

lol i am planning for similar configurations (intel optane memory + nvme ssd) to free up ram space used for primocache

i have read something about storemi from amd but it doesn't look good iinm
*
QUOTE(TristanX @ Nov 28 2018, 11:41 AM)
If you use only 1 OS, StoreMi is good. It requires the app installed once you make a StoreMi drive. If you have other OS with no StoreMi app, you cannot see StoreMi drive..... even after removing the tier drive. You are pretty much screwed the target drive once you have StoreMi enabled on it. You have to start over for the disk drive if you dont want the StoreMi mess.

I went Primocache instead. Dont want that cannot see a drive nonsense.
*
i have been testing intel optane 32gb with a 4tb wd red for torrent drive..

few things i can tell ya
1. it uses raid
2. if u somehow screw up da OS etc..
u cannot unoptane it

at current prices of nvme.. optane 32gb kindda pointless cause you can do a script on your torrent client to transfer to your hdd once the torrent done..

nice gimmick but overpriced atm.

QUOTE(nrw @ Nov 28 2018, 04:03 PM)
Yup I'd agree with that, especially as a primary SSD.

For a secondary SSD he could buy the coming 4bit QLC SSD's (of Samsung) which should be able to offer high capacities at lower prices with a few drawbacks that generally won't weight heavy for that purpose.
*
eh did u see theres a write limit on the slc to maintain that 500mbps..
its similar to 960/970 evo..

Placed an order with EIT Store and they still didn't ship even after 7 day of making payment
Whereas with GT Mart I got my SSD in only 3 days
