Hey guys, any thoughts on samsung pm951 256gb nvme ssd?

is 280mb write speed considered slow? cuz even samsung 850 evo has almost double of its write speed.

it's almost the same as advertised. nothing's wrong

for usage that needs relatively high reads and low writes, it's good enough. 250gb/s of write speed is acceptable for light client work load usage, e.g. normal usage at home and office work.

samsung 850 evo is competing in mainstream sata ssd market. it must have good speeds for both read and write, because most mainstream drives in this market segment have saturated sata3 speeds for years

however, this doesn't mean most users can gain benefits from write speeds that high. on the other hand, a much improved read speeds are more practical imo.

we might have another worthy value ssd this time: crucial's bx300. while most manufacturers are pushing 3d tlc nand value ssds in market, the mlc-based crucial bx300 is really refreshing.

the warranty period is still 3 years

some have, some don't. afaik samsung, transcend, sandisk, and crucial ssds come with one. alternatively you can also use free cloning software like macrium reflect.

it depends on how you look at it. if you checked their price/performance ratios, 240gb range is a better option. (cheaper relatively, with better performance and endurance, compared to 120gb range options)

i rather save more to get a 240gb range than settled with 120gb.

Agree better buy the larger size of 240gb as it is more worthwhile. Hope there are no suddenly increase like the GPU Mining Crisis smile.gif

nand flash price hike might be imminent. there are already news about nand flash price going up since few months ago (due to shortage). in about a month's time, gpu price might go up again, also due to shortage (gddr5).

if you have some extras, i think you can still look for good deals at various places for now.

no problem; imo the better timing to get a ssd is always when you're sure you need one. also, to get one or not, it really depends on your situations.

if you have some extras (despite current exchange rates and on-going price hikes), and if your current computer is still running os on hdd, then it's better to get one. you will save a lot of time waiting for os and apps to load, and be more productive.

the bottom line: for a pc with 8gb ram and 3rd generation intel cpu, adding even a value ssd can make a significant difference smile.gif

You're spot on, i decided on the SSD option as to give a new life to my 2 years old laptop so I can utilize for other tasks smile.gif Now the loading of os and apps feels sluggish smile.gif

Thanks again for your reply, horns smile.gif

a 2-year old laptop is not that old smile.gif but yes it will definitely help. you will realize that you should get a ssd sooner haha

most of the times i will pick a laptop with plain hdd and then get an aftermarket ssd and do a self upgrade. usually gaming-series laptops allow you to do that without voiding warranty.

Want to ask for opinion.

saw a deal in lazada, a refurbished sk hynix pc300 nvme 256gb (pulled from refurbished laptop) is selling at rm349.

It is really tempting. but the internet doesnt have much info about this ssd, let alone its review.

I asked the seller for the read and write speed but he replied this:

(128KB, Typical) Read : Up to 530MB/s(128/256/512GB)
Write : Up to 190MB/s(128GB), 370MB/s(256GB),

want to ask if it's worth it to buy?

it's an oem ssd from sk hynix. this means warranty depends on the seller.

the internet does have some but limited information about it, https://www.skhynix.com/eng/product/ssdClient.jsp ; it's found in dell's computer systems, such as certain Alienware, OptiPlex, Latitude, Inspiron, Precision and XPS models, https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/4/D...?driverId=2V23D

if you looked at the first link, the 256gb variant has a seq.read of 1800MB/s, seq.write of 400MB/s, rand.read of 170K IOPS and rand.write of 100K IOPS

for that price i think it's relatively cheap (it's oem so it's much cheaper). however please make sure it's the same ssd. sometimes sellers do not know what they are selling so it's better to double confirm this part first before buy.

didn't quite get the meaning of the last part (after 'but'). if you're looking for good deals, there are some at garage sales section.
