sifu, please I need help.

I have a 256gb intel 600p installed with the latest intel ssd toolbox. It is my boot drive with latest windows build 16299. My board is asrock ab350 which does not have fast boot but ultra fast boot.

If I disable fast boot, my pc works fine. However, if I use ultra fast boot, my pc may black screen some time after booting into windows. iinm, my disk activity led doesnt blink. Sometimes worse case is BSOD with watchdog error..

Any idea what is the cause?

this part might be related to incompatibility of the bios and os. i think you should find this out from their user manual, user comments or reviews to see if there are optimal settings for the two to run properly.

btw it's ok to run with fast boot disabled. it sounds like a waste of feature, but if i were you i will just pick stability than frequent bsods.

850 evo is backed by 5-year warranty, sandisk ultra 3d has 3 years.

Oh yeah forget 5 years warranty on Samsung as well vs 3 on SanDisk

Mind I ask does nvme SSD works on old z97 platform? I'm still running z97 and 4790k, alot of oem nvme SSD at garage sale..looks tempting

i have an asrock z97 extreme6, and it works fine with pcie ssds as boot drive. instead of using m.2 slot, i use pcie slot.

--

about optane-based consumer ssds, there are a number of advantages over flash-based ssds that need to be highlighted:

1. high through-puts for low queue depths (qd-1 to 4);
2. no slow-down even if it's full (no need op to achieve performance consistency);
3. high endurance (about 6 times higher);
4. no need to get higher capacity to get higher performance;
5. no need trim command;
6. no need secure erase to restore performance.

intel 900p is still the first iteration of product release. it will definitely become better just like previous development cycles of flash-based ssds.

however, like performance nvme ssds, not many can make full use of it. looking at its current price, it's still better to get flash-based ssds.

hi guys,

im on my way to upgrade my PC to an x299 platform and i've included a samsung 960 evo 250gb nvme ssd in the upgrades list.

what i'd like to know is should i use it as an OS ssd or as a game ssd for overall better performance? currently i have a lite-on mu3 240gb which i store my games, and my pc is usually idle when not in use; i rarely turn it off.

thanks for the advise in advance guys.

for pcie adapter, get one with heat sink, or fan if possible. if not, use m.2 slot with heat sink.

oem or not they are just different distribution channels. they will work fine.

use 960 evo as os drive. it will be relatively more responsive than sata.

So the dinosaur HDD brick is showing its age.....time to get something more responsive. What would you guys recommend for someone that is a bit constricted on budget? Just gonna put OS and some frequently used software on it..

Thanks

the basic option is a small budget sata ssd (preferably 240gb range or above; 120gb range might be too small, and their performance are not that great). the better brands are samsung, intel, sandisk, and kingston. (they have least issues)

for choices, you can check out garage sales section here for good deals. (some are old drives; but they are still ok, especially those that come with mlc nand)

note that it all depends on budget, and 'you get what you pay for'. (for good used drives, this sometimes doesn't apply hehe)

did you do it while the pc has internet connectivity? for w10 installation it's usually better to unplug the lan cable first. it will be much faster because you can skip all online checking processes that can be done after install.

congratulations on the new toy lol that will last you for quite some time.

yes. i did skip the internet conn..

booting with the only m.2 is really fast.. but when plug in the other old hdds, take some time to go in... even with fast boot enable.

i wish i can skip for bios checking peripherals during boot-up... hmm.gif

ok haha

yes of course the more hardware are connected the slower the boot time. if you had many hdds, it's better to convert an old pc to house them instead.

to me boot time of under 1 minute is fine enough. what matters more is after boot

Hahaha I have the 256gb version. If I enable ultra fast boot can boot in 5.6s. But it's unstable.

Had to disable ultra fast boot. Boot time becomes 12.6s. This is with a 6 years old mechanical drive as my storage.

The screen sometimes can go blank itself and the led activity of disk drive wont blink at all. Sometimes it will show BSOD error watchdog. Then if I reboot it, it will go into windows but will shut down within seconds.

The thing is if I boot with disabled fast boot, then switch back to ultra fast boot again, it will be stable for sometime. Then the whole instability repeat again.

In the end, I resort to disabled fast boot.

I have Windows in my slower SSD while Steam and other games are all loaded in my faster SSD. As games are so huge nowadays, you want the advantage of faster read speed.
