The reason why I’m on this thread is I still have connections in Msia. I can’t remember when I first started posting, but in any case, how successful this is depends on all of us. We need to be respectful when posting and make informative and interesting posts. Pictures makes it even more enjoyable.
I would also like to encourage newbies to read through old posts and gain information before asking questions like “what bike should I buy, or can you recommend?” It is like how long is a piece of string? Too hard to answer and makes posts too boring. Much better if they can ask about specific bikes, or “how-to” questions.
This thread is not brand specific, so in theory there should be plenty to talk about! So up to all of us!

I dont think cycling is expensive hobby....

I started like 20 years ago with a Le' Run Mountain Bike.... then it got stolen like few years ago...

Then Since I'm in KL I'm looking for a folding bicycle... I bought mine for around 2K it is Peddle assist since now I bike to work sweat less is good since no one like smelly people around...

also I have a el chepo folding at home and my sis got another one around 300RM... quite satisfy with it...

If you need for a daily commute get slightly expensive since it is more reliable and less breakdown is good... but it will earn back it cost since I'm saving petrol...

for ride in the park my second one is el cheapo RM350 folding... it is Metal... it is very hard to fold and the China gear sucks... but I'm quite happy with my purchase since it get the job done... I just need a workout I'm not participating in some championship... and so far it work for me.... also I mount a baby seat behind so my kids can enjoy as well... if it broke I'll fix it... I doubt the China gear will last but a set of 7 speeder shimano is not expensive around 50... or so... lets see how it will last

Hobby wheregot cheap one. I ask Desaster to build his own because nothing seems to satisfy him. As for me, i very easy satisfy wan.
Also if you build your own bike the material is very cheap, it's the equipment and learning curve that is expensive. Moreover once you start building, I bet you won't stop building even when you run out of space.
Yes, I am showing off how to disregard peer pressure and stay happy.

I am still here out of the love of recreational cycling. Great way to "service" your health. Also great for mental health. I really benefited from it, hence would do my best to promote this sport.
Making cycling an elite club (a la golfing) is detrimental to the sport, hence do my best to demystify bicycle snake oil.
Its a lovely sport, everyone should give it a go. And a 350buck bicycle-like-object is a great starting point. Spent to your hear content after you destroy the 1st bike.

Ps, I don't wear spendek,padded pant, clip shoes…
My favorite attire is slippers, singlet and badminton shorts.
Helmet is a must laaaa try my best to go slower than 20km/H for safety....

a cheap beginner bike is always good to get you started off. who knows u got bored after a few rides you won't lose a lot of money.
i started with a second hand tern worth 1800. being a newbie, i think it wasn't a really good purchase. however it was a good bike and i didn't lose a lot of monies on it.

progressively my thought towards 20" foldie has changed, I look into 16" but those are portable and suitable for short commute, less than 30km. finally i bite the bullet and got a brompton. it was good but kind of expensive.

for newbie if you can buy from taobao, i truly recommend fnhon or even china original dahon.

As long as you are happy. U like Foldies, stick to Foldies, if you think RB better, go RB… If both you like, get both… no need ask for opinion wan. Unless not your money, than you ask the one who is paying.

How long do you consider long distance?

riding a folding bike give u less headache, less mental torcher. why? coz if u cycling for a long distance and annything happen to ur bike u can jump on a pulic transport.

rb?hahaha laugh.gif i had expirience being left on bigger and faster peloton (yeah, that time i was too slow to catchup with the peloton). and to add up some spice, both of my tyre flat out that time and need to walk around 10km before rescue came. i try to take bus, but the bus driver wont let me in with the bike.

i had cycled from ipoh to tg malim with folding bike in touring speed alone. i started 10am and arrived at tg malim around 5.00pm. its getting late to cycling back to ipoh that time, so i take ets back to ipoh without any problem.

one bike are enough?hahaha.. that is a myth i can say. when u know whats ur need, later u will add more than one bike to fullfill ur needs.

Haha, will challenge 60km and above, might go for 90-120km when stamina build up.

One of my cycler gang mentioned that roadbike for long distance will have physical stress than folding. Its true?

get a proper bike fit, ur bike and u will became best workout without any problem.

i starting up with fb, after add on few fb i bought a rb, change 2 rb frame coz size dont fit and maintain only one untill now. my friend always mad at me if i bring my rb when cycling together with them (mostly they all rb). they said i like to bully them if i bring rb. so my rb only store at home most of the time. i will ride my rb when i had to cycle with extreme rider group.

i can follow them up with my fb with no problem if the pace 35kmj and below with 100km+. fb is good for training ur cadence and build up endurance before jump to rb.

oh ya, all of my bike (6 fb 1 rb) already done bike fitting to make sure i didnt have any injury during cycling and i can go many milage without any problem.

this is my small piece of advice (actually my 10cent only) laugh.gif

buy rb when u can maintain 35kmj and above pace for 160km+. below than that, fb can do the same like rb. and if u already crazy about rb, the cost upgrading ur rb sometimes can buy u a car!

Under 200km, small wheel can la, above 200km, what bike oso painful…
60km is a nice distance, not too long, not too short. Small wheel sap sap sui only wink.gif still need training la.
IMHO, if one can do 60km in a day, your health is not bad. Keep it up!
90~120km is the best mid distance cycling. But you must commit time for training until you get there. Once you can do this distance, you will feel very healthy and confident.
*Ps, the last 20km seems like forever…

True that! Today I ride with friends, mostly rb. For maintaining 30++kmh, it's totally doable on a foldie, even with 406.but once they started to go past 40kmh, that's when u'll get dropped out. I guess 40+kmh for an rb is still considered a manageable speed, while on a foldy, that's sprinter mode edi. Haha.

Moulton are meant for 40kmh.
Seriously, why would anyone expect a foldie to do everything a RB cando (and better) but nobody expect to fold a RB?

Ride as fast as you possibly can while you are still young and agile. once you get as oldas iI am… it very difficult to ride over 25km/h average speed sad.gif
Can only go faster than 25km/h on downhill… since I am big and heavy, highest I managed on 451 was 60kmh… downhill

Thanks for sharing, appreciate on your explanation. I might demand better speed on fb as my friends ride on rb, hard to catch up with them.

So far still fine for 40km and train up for 60km right now, will train up before make the decision on rb. Thanks

i dont think anyone here would expect a foldie to do as what rb capable of. i think we all can accept the limitations of a foldie and live with it. i was highlighting on what azam wrote previously which im inclined to agree, based on my experience. icon_rolleyes.gif
