Good buy string. The Onkyo SR605 is a multi award winner in most reputable AV/hi-fi publications, including What Hi-Fi's Best Product of the Year.
@ arj - bought one in HK last week for a friend for HK$3,800, asked them to bundle a HDMI cable as well. It was stocked out for several months when the product first came to HK. |

It is still in the box, i hadnt any time to test it out, had to go to work. Once i get back home, and get it set up proper with the Onkyo speakers, i'll give a once-over about how the receiver works for me.
In any case, it is a definitely upgrade for me. From that crappy Sony HTiB receiver that lasted me more than 5 years.Still works though.....just that it's getting long in the tooth. |

hey guys, i know this is a hd-dvd thread, and i don't mean to be off topic here. but i just gotta know sumthing:
i saw a demo of blu-ray at best denki..on a full HD bravia lcd. the quality was fricking amazing...i mean i thought i was watching those sony advertisements...you know..where they have this 'studio' camera and everything is sharp and crystal clear? but NO..it was actually Day After Tomorrow playing...then followed by A Knight's Tale, and Narnia with the exact same quality. now my question is...is this because of blu-ray tech..or is it because it's blu-ray + full HD tv? what happens if u play HD DVDs on a full HD tv? will there be any significant change as we take advantage of the 1080p reso? |

arj: i'm just using a measly 27 inch Samsung LCD..S series (IINM) with HDMI.
don't get me wrong, i think i'm pretty much satisfied with HD DVDs since they totally give a different experience (well, the ones with great transfers at least) and with HDMI to boot, the colors/contrast just get better. well, maybe it's true the ones i see were demo discs, so they probably had the good scenes going. actually now that you guys mention it...the scenes were indeed crystal clear..but when fast motion scenes..there were some blurring..and kind of a ghosting effect, but very very subtle. kinda funny for a full hd, 100hz tv...so maybe it's the disc? but yeah, when you buy those great hd dvd titles (e.g. 300, hot fuzz, bourne ultimatum) with awesome trueHD audio..man it's a total experience. so if arj says it's really no difference...then those demo discs just BS'd me.. ah well.. p.s: arj, already placed order for pan's? planning to buy children of men, the departed when i can afford to. feeling like buying heroes as well..for the extras. w00t! |

@ SdRawk - to add to what the others have posted.
I use a HD-DVD add-on to play HD-DVD on my 360 via components + optical cable. If I compare this to my PS3 for Blu-Ray via HDMI, I can say the PS3/Blu-Ray wins. But that won't be fair as I'm not comparing apple to apple. I've seen both HD-DVD and BR on high-end setups and agree with arj, I can't tell the difference. So my point is, it's not about which format is better, but rather the equipment that's driving it. Further, you were watching the demo in 1080p on a presumably large LCD (>40in?) on presumably a stand-alone Blu-Ray player through a decent AV receiver. You would not have a fair comparison with your 27incher on presumably a HD-DVD add on drive sans the appropriate audio-decoding amp. Sorry too many presumptions, but hope you get my point. |

Try connecting a HD DVD player and play some movies on the full hd tv that you saw. Chances are you might not see any difference at all if you're watching from 5-7 feet away don't get me wrong, i think i'm pretty much satisfied with HD DVDs since they totally give a different experience (well, the ones with great transfers at least) and with HDMI to boot, the colors/contrast just get better. well, maybe it's true the ones i see were demo discs, so they probably had the good scenes going. actually now that you guys mention it...the scenes were indeed crystal clear..but when fast motion scenes..there were some blurring..and kind of a ghosting effect, but very very subtle. kinda funny for a full hd, 100hz tv...so maybe it's the disc? but yeah, when you buy those great hd dvd titles (e.g. 300, hot fuzz, bourne ultimatum) with awesome trueHD audio..man it's a total experience. so if arj says it's really no difference...then those demo discs just BS'd me.. ah well.. p.s: arj, already placed order for pan's? planning to buy children of men, the departed when i can afford to. feeling like buying heroes as well..for the extras. w00t! Pan's on its way to my house already. Super fast delivery. I ordered around 12am Saturday and they arrived in Malaysia last night I'm keeping my HD DVDs and BDs for collection so I won't be selling them anytime soon QUOTE(horray @ Dec 31 2007, 03:47 PM) The name of the shop is Legend. Same row as Murni, Public Bank, Secret Recipe and the Mitsubishi showroom in SS2. |

terra: yep i get your point. silly me, but i forgot all about difference in size and the machine.
aaaanyway, since we're using the add on, i guess it wouldn't have that much power to churn out the maximum of the hd dvd if i were to play it on a full HD, 32 and above incher tv huh? in any case i still think HD DVDs rock. it's like coke and pepsi. not only it's red vs blue, but hd dvd is like classic premium quality, and blu-ray is its more edgier, funkier counterpart but in the end it's both high def. just like pepsi and coke ends up being carbonated colas. arj: wow that's really fast. amazon likes you kot...always order hd dvds. oh and about the sales..no sweat; i understand what u mean, me being a movie freak and whatnot. just trying my luck..teehee |

Should use VGA or HDMI on your 360 in order to compare with PS3 HDMI
Even so, it also depends on the quality of both formats (same movie)... there are some websites/forum that compares same movie between both formats with one being the winner.
