Guys, actually if you don't want Video-Onz because of the speed cap (like me), you can contact U Mobile customer service and tell them you want to opt-out/disable Video-Onz. After that, any video streaming you do will deduct your main data quota. The best thing I like is, no speed cap, so watch YouTube 1080p without worrying about buffering (unless if that particular area is having bandwidth issues, then don't say la).

dont ask more la, why not up sikit speed capped to 2mbps or 2.5mbps so that customer can stream 720p without hassle. also not utilise main quota..i think 720p is enough for youtube/netflix streaming even on desktop..sure you can opt out video onz by sms, but the oppoprtunity cost that your main quota will be utilized..hurmm...Me average video onz >30gb a month..

From what we see "Wow extra quota for video streaming, very good la U Mobile"

From what they (U Mobile) see "We reduce the bandwidth speed for video streaming so that it won't stress or cause major network congestion due to video streaming, in return we provide more quota for them"

U Mobile knows that majority of consumers (especially non tech savvy ones) are putting plans offering first, instead of network performance first. Consumers sure will get attracted and easily gain public attention with "more quota" and "unlimited" stuff. Who doesn't like more when you can get for less? So they introduce Video-Onz that limits video streaming bandwidth of 1.5Mbps (suitable for SD 480p streaming) is all because they want to have control with the network bandwidth, instead of we, consumers keep watching videos in 1080p and eventually made majority of their mobile towers congested. They don't have such capabilities to provide or upgrade bandwidth/towers in a short time like Maxis, Celcom and Digi do, where U Mobile want to increase subscribers base fast by providing the most affordable and competitive plans/offerings compared to the big 3 telcos. Indeed, U Mobile is very smart to have this idea.

So, don't expect them to increase the Video-Onz speed cap limit anytime soon... It will be stucked for 1.5Mbps for a long time.

If you're heavy video streaming user and you don't like the buffering because of the 1.5Mbps speed cap, and if you don't want to opt out Video-Onz, well then that's what you get for "get more but pay less" or known as paying "not much money for premium service". If you use a lot of GBs for video streaming, and you're expecting great streaming experience (e.g. no buffering even at 1080p), definitely you got to opt out Video-Onz so that you wont have the speed cap limit, and then subscribe data plans that offers a lot of quota, and a higher price of cos. Remember, once you're on U Mobile network, you shall not expecting a premium network performance from them. You can only expect an "average, satisfied enough" network from them. U Mobile prioritise on quantity rather than quality. If you want better network, you got no choice but to port out to other telcos and choose their more expensive plans.

In conclusion, you'll get "something in return" when you get more by paying less.

at last someone with good perspectives..thumbup.gif

so far i have been an employee of 2 diff malaysian telcos.

thing is, UM can't afford to play the game the way telcos like Celcom & Maxis did. Both of them have a great start ahead. If want to follow the traditional ways, it will be too late for UM to make profits.

As quite young telco, so as the way they have to tackle the market. their target customers are also quite diff. even their corporate partnership focus on SMEs, instead of big corporations. smile.gif

edit: went to Sunway Pyramid center but they are out of stock, any method to check availability instead of having to go there?

offering unlimited with speed cap wont compromise anything. the promised throughput & speed are maintained as long as subs dont exceed their quota usage.

when subscribers exceed normal data usage, they are put into category with low priority respective to resources access. technically ur packets will go through shaping and remarking at the telco's pgw. only drawback is subs still accessing the resources, which will increase contention access and some subs may experiences 'traffic starvation'.

as long as the telco reminded the subs of what happening, imo it is still better than no access at all.

the normal subs who are not yet exceed their quota are not affected by the above, as they have higher priority through their preemption capability and vulnerability.

contrary to non-unlimited, they will just drop ur packets through policers. this have the advantage of freeing the capacity, but u wont have access unless topup.  smile.gif

Normal quota plan and unlimited plan is different. Quota plan control all the while are in place. And they are all the while working well. There is nothing need to be discussed about.

Unlimited has speed capped and there is no hard and fast rule for quota that's the only one needs to be concern about.

DiGi unlimited plan has no written quota for their unlimited plans but recently they had informed customers on the new quota to their unlimited plans. So it shows that in he end all telcos are not ready for real unlimited plan and again they implement it just for more profit. In the end, it still prove that quota control is still the key to ensure the service quality.

you are talking bout which "based" is better, quota or otherwise.

i'm talking about technical level implemented in the pcrf. yes, they are differences.

all packages quota based or not, are defined thoroughly. it's just a matter of configuration settings and how the telcos policies affecting them. theoretically, if normal data quota is not yet exceeded, then the speed wont be cap. that's the basic idea of "unlimited" plan.

not to underestimate you, but if you dont understand from technical side, then i rest my case. thanks you. smile.gif

Truly unlimited, but with 5Mbps and poor coverage by umobile, it's barely there. Heck you don't even need a 4G device to use this line. My umobile 3G can reach 7Mbps at my area.
*
How can you get 7Mbps if the maximum cap is at 5Mbps?

I think he/she means 3G already can reach 7Mbps, so 5Mbps advertised as 4G? Seriously?

if my understanding correct, i think he means that u no need go 4G since normal 3G can speed over 5mbps....
does not mean he subscribed the plan and run 3G for 7mbps blink.gif

I beg to differ. I would say the other way round. Their 4G coverage sucks especially when you are indoors.
