yes
2.4ghz better than my old router asus N12U
old about 2 or 3 bar from 4, now 4 bar consistently. (2 wall)
if but 5ghz got problem if got wall(only 2 bar from 4)

well its simultaneously 2 band router. so no problem because both band is active

It is better from my perspective with Padavan
More stable in every aspect especially on wifi and functions while give option to support for unifi vlan tagging and VPN server.
It also allow to work as 5gz repeater which default Xiaomi only repeat at 2.4ghz.

Only disadvantage from me is does not support QOS.

After I set IPTV STB Port to LAN2, then can't detect my Mi 3 router.

I can't login to 192.168.1.1, so I need to reset router then can login.

My Firmware version is 3.4.3.9-099_5aa2a75.

I just follow MIUI forum, after it do I need to upload any firmware or just follow MIUI forum OK?

I think I'm going to get one of these. So cheap. Especially like the separate 2.4 & 5Ghz antennas.

Anyone can give a review on the wireless repeater bridging performance? Any gooding on 2.5 and 5ghz? Or comparison with other brands.

I'm thinking of buying this and use as repeater instead of buying a dedicated wireless extender as I heard those wireless extender can't handle multi clients well.

The requirement is to repeat wifi signal from unifi at first floor by installing this at ground floor where the signal was still decent.

Not true, the router handles connections and routing. Let's say 10000 connections. Could be 100 clients x 100 connections each or 10 x 1000. The repeater, in addition to acting as a repeater back to the base station, is also acting as an AP to registered wifi devices. Some APs just can't handle too many, maybe 10, 20, 40 or 80. It matters because the AP does more than just boost a signal, it manages collision avoidance and retransmission to each and every device.

Having said that I'm sure the MiR3 can handle anything thrown at it in a typical residential environment.

i flashed mine after using the stock FW for a week

it feels 'a little bit' more responsive on surfing, there's only about 10 connected devices at home so the router is having a constant low load, got this router just to have the 5G band (replacing my old RT12 UHP with Tomato USB firmware) at a bloody good price (paid RM95, so I cant complain tongue.gif)

wifi coverage on 2.4G is definitely wider, router's placed inside a store room at the back of a normal double storey house, i used to not be able to get any signals if i park my car opposite the street, now i'm getting about 2 bars (of 4) of signal on that spot

5G coverage improvement unknown, this is my first AC router laugh.gif

Could you comment in the wifi repeating ability of this router with padavan? 🤔 I'm really thinking if I should pull the plug and order this or go for a more expensive dedicated wifi extender / repeater

i've no problem getting ~9.5Mbps (on a 10Mbps unifi connection) on most downloads

not using it as a repeater, i think the easier way out for you is to get a few MI USB repeater (RM35 each IIRC) while using the mi3 router as your main unit
get two of those and i think you're all set to cover a 3 storey semi-D premise with ease.

Could you try openvpn? I notice the speed can vary depending on the hardware it's running & sever encryption

Hi akecema, thanks for the post and guide. Just a question, I do not know how to start the flashing work. Sorry, I am not a techie so will appreciate some guidance. Do I need to first configure the Mi Router 3 and ensure I can connect to Mi Router 3 via WiFi? In my case, I am planning to use it as an WiFi Extender. So should I connect the Mi Router 3 WAN port to the Maxis Technicolor LAN port and start the basic configuration?

After the basic configuration, then I can start the flashing as per the guide? Then at the Step 4, "Script Configuration" section, my laptop will have automatic access to the Mi Router 3 for the SSH access because I am connected to the Mi Router 3 WiFi?

Sorry if my question is a bit dumb. I would like to buy Mi Router 3 as it is a cheap alternative as my WiFi Extender, but I am worried about the ads injection (https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/49910k/is_the_latest_xiaomi_mini_router_injecting_ads/) hence looking at your guide to flash it. I am just not techie enough to understand some of the technical terms.

Last question, will Mi WiFi app work after the flashing? Or all future succeeding configuration will have to be done via the Web Interface?

Thanks for this thread, replaced my burnt out TM D-Link DIR-615 Router with Mi Router 3 and followed your guide, everything works well.

For anyone curious, signal is pretty bad on 5G (2 bars on Ground Floor, My modem is on 1st Floor), and constant disconnection. Range for 2.4G is far wider than DIR-615.

Internet speed on both bands are similar to TM original router, but the spike and load time on certain websites (Facebook/Instagram) is unbearable, especially on games like Dota2 (Frequent spike), currently on Unifi VIP10.

Average Connected Devices: 10-12
High Load/Usage Devices: 2-5

For me the speed is the same for both bands for my usage (e.g. Web Surfing, Gaming, Torrent)

5G if I'm in my room (1 wall away from router), other than that its 2.4G. But oddly all my devices are automatically connected to 2.4G regardless of signal strength... hmm.gif

Hi akecema, I am stuck at the steps to change the language. When I press L or Shift L, it just do not change the menu, it should go to a page where I can chose 1 or 2. The 2nd problem is what to key in the root password. Is it the same password as the mi3 wifi password ? Any help is appreciated. Thks

Help.. I'd managed to flash the ROM to Padavan, following the guide. I can now access the new ROM administrative menu but I do not know where to set it as a WiFi repeater... I went to the Administration >> Operation Mode screen, and I set it as "Access Point", but it doesn't prompt me to connect to my existing WiFi or anything. Can someone help me?

**edited: fixed. There is another configuration under the respective band, i.e. "Bridge" and that's where you configure which WiFi you want to extend on.

I think the L or Shift L changing language option is not functioning anymore. I did the entire flashing with guestimate and some screenshots help from the xiaomi website you had shared.

First of all you can't hit 500Mbps over 2.4GHz Wifi unless you have higher both router and adapter that has 256-QAM capability. So far, only router and adapter rated 802.11ac Wave 2 comes with this feature. Since you already purchase a 802.11ac, it's pointless to use 2.4GHz unless your 5GHz signal strength is too weak for reliable transmission.

There's no 50MBps yet in Malaysia, I think you are referring to 50Mbps right?

Oops sorry, yes 50Mbps~ Im somehow felt 5ghz strength is weak that is why~ I think router like TPLink Archer AC2600 at the specs shows that the 2.4ghz is up to 800mbps

Not just router you would need a adapter that with the same speed rating. So why don't you use a powerline for a reliable connection?

I can get about 93Mbps on 5GHz and about 80Mbps for 2.4GHz for mi router 3.
The only limitation is the WAN port is 100Mbps hence it will not go more 100Mbps which is not suitable for TIME 500Mbps if anyone is using that.

You're welcome. smile.gif

For my house which is double storey, I have 2 mi router 3 and Unifi 50Mbps. I use 5Ghz to bridge both AP. Then all devices connect to 2.4 Ghz. By doing that, I can get full speed on my extender as well. Otherwise the speed will cut into half.

stock firmware with Unifi doesn't work~ you have to flash your router to custom firmware in order to gain Vlan functionality that required by Unifi

No need to build Padavan if running already, just flash the new .trx from the web GUI. I don't know if it will solve your wifi problem, though. Maybe first try using an app on your phone like Wifi Analyzer to find which channels are interfering.

Stock router cannot use home Unifi because it doesn't have Vlan tagging. You need to build Padavan firmware and flash it on the router. It's not too difficult if you are tech minded.

Follow this guide: http://en.miui.com/thread-550069-1-1.html

Have you done a site survey with Wifi Analyzer app?

Have you tried expanding channel width to 20/40MHz in the 2.4GHz settings?

You're running the correct VM. The top image is what I got, I think. Just press the enter key and it should go into the script. Or type Y and enter.

Try following this tutorial as an alternative: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xiaomi/comments/5d...om_firmware_on/

It would have helped you to change the language to English. It says how in the instructions I listed. Wouldn't have made the process faster, but at least you'd know what's going on. Building the toolchain and firmware took about 2 hours on my old laptop.

ONT port 2 link to mi router wan port?

I had followed steps 7 on page 1.

my ONT is hg8240h, I tried accessing into it and the configuration is totally different from page 1 tutorials. I not able to find any settings regarding the lan 1 or 2.

I tried to check is those lan ports required settings or not by changing the maxis router from ONT default port 1 to 4 one by one and it still able to dial for internet access. So I try removing maxis out and put in mi router into ONT from port 1 to 4 one by one still not able to access.

possible needs to find data sheets to configure the ONT first?

1. my pppoe password is not like what Maxis default mentioned like below
12345@home.maxis.com.my

2. possible the firmware I use got problem? But I got the 5aa2a75 from here > https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...&#entry83615598

3. possible my Mi3 WAN port faulty?

The additional 1 behind your username id as the password is correct. What do u mean yours different (or call maxis cs to verify)?

here the log & status if id / password problem (changed mine to 1234567. And after insert correct password I need reconnect twice then only get connected)

I had tried swaping the lan cable from the maxis to mi3 and is not working. lastly, I make my best bet will be the firmware or settings. the logs I have looks a bit abnormal comparing yours. don't have time to test yet for below;

1. reset
2. redo the padavan process maybe?
3. I can't find the setting u mention "make sure the WAN (Advanced WAN option) is router instead of AP", can SS? sorry for trouble.

I reset twice, still "timeout waiting for PADO packets" a more then 5-6 times .. I give up waiting. tried port 1,2,3 & 4. Still same. I try update promethues and follow the steps rebuild tool chain and flash firmware again. still waiting for tool chain building now.. later try again, if same "timeout waiting for PADO packets"... i guess maybe my router problem? or that hg8240h ONT needs setting to recognize 3rd party router.. headaacheee cry.gif

seems like i also wish someone using unifi wants to buy from me. I don't think my maxis will work since I don't know how to change the ONT hg8240h settings.

whos wants can PM me. I sell RM90 free postage for West Malaysia. Got Box together and flash to Padavan oredi. Consider new because I never use it before, only try to set Maxis but not successful.

If you get 172.24.x.x IP address means that your credentials are wrong or account was suspended.

Try using xxxxx@unifi. All in lower case.

No problem. TM is just trying to be helpful by allowing us to connect even with a wrong password or username. It would have been more helpful if they just left things alone and and allowed the router to say authentication failed.

No problem. TM is just trying to be helpful by allowing us to connect even with a wrong password or username. It would have been more helpful if they just left things alone and and allowed the router to say authentication failed.

Hello, i am new to here. I register coz want to ask.
I'm not techincal people and i'm afraid ti flash the Mi Wifi, but i really want to.
Is there no caution/precaution steps while flashing the Mi Wifi??

And after I flash the router, can i connect 3g/4g usb dongle into it usb port??
Now i have usb 3g dongle but when i put it inside the usb port, it will never connect to internet. So i put the modem into my TP link router, connect the internet and using Mi Wifi as repeater. But my Tp link is old and the connection is not so stable. So i want to flash the Mi Wifi. But if the MI Wifi doesn't support 3g usb dongle, i don't want to flash it.

Looking at the settings GUI on my Padavan FW Mi 3 router, there is an option to enable a USM modem, and it looks like 3G and LTE are supported. I haven't tried it, so I can't say if it works or not.

Just a heads up for anyone using the Mi 3 as a router on the various high-bandwidth services: the LAN *and* WAN ports are limited to 100Mbps, so you will not get more speed than that through it even if using 5GHz wireless. Using it as a repeater should be okay.

I guess the 3G doesn't have that limitation, but the custom Padavan firmware (if you need it) will not be developed any further, so it's a bit of a dead end for this cheap but powerful router.

Yes, but the Padavan firmware is not going to be developed any further, which was what made this router so good. If there are any future security issues, they won't be patched.

Hi just checking. Are you still running this router with padavan on repeater mode? Can know how's the speed performance for device to device transfer through 5G WiFi? Will have 2 laptop and 1 phone connected to the repeated WiFi network for local file transfer, thinking about the performance for local transfer. Possible to hit like 40-50MB/s?

By local I mean wifi between 2 devices connected to the same network.

My config is planned to be:

Existing 100M broadband with 300N WiFi router from the house owner - > mi router 3 with padavan - > setup to bridge to existing WiFi-N then broadcast AC866/1200 - > my own devices (2 phones & 2 PC) on Wi-Fi

I am planning to use it for local file transfer between my own devices via WiFi so trying to ask see anyone tested the config with file transfer over WiFi with mi router 3 on padavan.

The thread is saying if Lan 100mbps it will cap the Internet speed but I'm not doing it with Lan so it's different topic.

You are not reading, since you wrote more now, I will point to you more direct.

Tested WiFi repeater speed using 5g at linking speed 866mbps only able to achieve around 15x-18x.mbps on Time 500mbps plan.
You are looking for 40-50 MB/s. (upto 500mbps}
Only high end router and high end mobile device achieve such speed.

Thanks for the reply. Good for reference. Will have to dive in to see if it can support broadcast 5G but bridge to 2.4G network. Guess 20Mbps will do also if no choice.

Coz now what I do if I don't want to do cable is to use hot-spot from phone broadcast at 5G. Laptop direct connect to hot-spot then use AirDroid. Can hit 30-40MB/s.
