US military deploys attack drones to South Korea

user posted image

WASHINGTON: The US Army is permanently stationing an attack drone system and its support personnel in South Korea amid ongoing tensions with the North, a Defence Department spokesman said on Monday (Mar 13).

Officials said the deployment, due by next year, was not unique to South Korea and was being conducted across the Army to provide infantry divisions with better intelligence.

But the announcement comes just one week after Pyongyang launched four ballistic missiles in its latest provocative test.

"The US Army, after coordination with the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and the US Air Force, has begun the process to permanently station a Gray Eagle Unmanned Aerial Systems company at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea," Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said.

The sensor-rich MQ-1C Gray Eagle is capable of carrying Stinger and Hellfire missiles, as well as other armaments.

It typically takes a company of 128 soldiers to maintain the drones, and there are usually 12 Gray Eagles per company.

However, Commander Gary Ross said only two or three of the aircraft were planned for the upcoming Kunsan deployment.

The drone company will be assigned to the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade of the 2nd Infantry Division.

It "adds intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability to that particular infantry division, as well as to our Korean allies," Davis said.

North Korea fired at least four missiles toward Japan last week, three of which splashed down in waters near Japan, saying they were tests for a possible strike on US bases on Japan.

A US missile defence system, THAAD, is being deployed to South Korea in the face of threats from the North.

The United States has about 50,000 troops in Japan, and another 28,000 in South Korea.

AFP Modernization 2nd Stage Sees More Attack Helis, Missiles

Second Horizon of modernization slated between 2018 and 2022 (image : PN)

The Department of National Defense (DND) is looking at the possibility of including more night-capable attack helicopters, precision guided missiles, drones and fast boats in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program’s Second Horizon.

user posted image

DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that they are studying the possibility of including these platforms and weapons in the existing list of equipment which will be acquired in the Second Horizon.

“We are still studying this as [Second Horizon] has already existing list,” he added.

The study gained further impetus when President Rodrigo Duterte earlier announced that he wants the AFP to have more night-capable attack helicopters and fast boats to expedite the elimination of threats from the Abu Sayyaf Group and other lawless elements in Mindanao.

The AFP Modernization Program is divided into three horizons, with the first lasting from 2013 to 2017, the second from 2018 to 2022 and third 2023 to 2028. The Second Horizon calls for the acquisition of equipment more attuned to external defense missions and has a programmed funding of around PHP100 billion.

During the First Horizon, the Philippine Air Force took the delivery of night-capable 8 AW-109E attack helicopters armed with two (left/right) machine gun pods with launchers for three 70 millimeter rockets, and number of combat utility helicopters.

Under this stage, contracts where also sealed for two Philippine Navy anti-submarine warfare AW-159 Lynx Wildcat helicopters and two brand-new Korean-made frigates.

First Horizon also saw the acquisitions of FA-50PHs, strategic sea-lift vessels, brand-new and refurbished military transport aircraft, land mobility assets, rifles, radars, assault amphibious vehicles, FPEs, among others. With these acquisitions, many were already delivered, while some are scheduled for delivery.

Immigration officer, 6 others nabbed by KL over ISIS links

user posted image

In the latest evidence of the growing presence of militants in the region, Malaysian police arrested a female immigration officer and six others linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) last week.

The woman officer is alleged to have arranged for militants to travel without valid documents to Sabah state on Borneo Island before heading to the southern Philippines nearby, police said in a statement yesterday.

Extremist groups such as the Abu Sayyaf that have professed loyalty to ISIS are based in the southern Philippines.

Regional security officials have warned that ISIS terrorists fleeing battle losses in the Middle East could be heading to South-east Asia, with Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines being one key destination.

The other suspects arrested by Malaysian police last week included three Filipinos with Malaysian permanent resident (PR) status, police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said in the statement.

The arrests were made last week in Sabah and Kuala Lumpur.

The 31-year-old female immigration officer was nabbed in Sandakan town in Sabah last Thursday. "Two suspects with PR status are believed to have assisted in the transit of three Indonesian ISIS militants to southern Philippines through Sabah."

Police said yesterday that the third Filipino suspect with Malaysian PR status was believed to be channelling funds to Mahmud Ahmad and Mohamad Joraimee Awang Raimee, two Malaysians who had joined up with ISIS in the southern Philippines.

"The immigration officer had arranged for the entry of people without valid travel documents, including ISIS militants from Indonesia and Malaysia, into Sabah before heading to southern Philippines," Tan Sri Khalid said.

Malaysian police arrested some 250 suspected militants between 2013 and last year. They included policemen, military officers, civil servants and students from international universities in Malaysia.

Criminologist P. Sundramoorthy from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Penang said diverse groups of people tend to lean towards ISIS' violent ideology.

The immigration officer was possibly an empathiser - a person who shelters militants or facilitate their movements.

"They are just as dangerous (as fighters) because they are contributing to the acts of aggression and violence of ISIS," Associate Professor Sundramoorthy told The Straits Times.

Malaysia suffered a terror attack in June last year, when two suspected militants threw a grenade into a nightspot in Puchong, Selangor, injuring eight people.

Police said last week that four Yemenis based in Malaysia were planning to attack the entourage of visiting Saudi King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud, but the plot was foiled by the authorities.
