Yes, I was wondering the same thing. I contacted Maybank to ask and they said yes and pointed me to the list of Maybank cards compatible with Apple Pay. But I get the feeling the customer service rep is thinking of the physical card. But what if I don’t want the physical card? Can I just enter the number/details of the virtual card to activate Apple Pay?

From the MAE FAQ it looks the virtual card works with Samsung Pay:

What is the usage of the virtual card?
You will be provided with a virtual card number, expiry date and CVV. Your MSOS will also be registered automatically upon onboarding of a MAE account. Once this is done, customers will be able to use their card for:
 Online e-commerce purchases
 NFC payment (e.g. Samsung Pay)
*
Yes, it can be add into ApplePay with the virtual card details without physical card. Been using it without any issue and physical card if needed can order later on.

If you are new to Maybank, you can get the virtual card, but if you are existing Maybank customer, you have no way to get that~

Anyone using MAE virtual card only (without physical card) and can add that virtual card to use on AP?
*
I think it will be similar to BigPay Virtual card as well.

What's the benefit of it is that you can separate your payment/purchase via offline/online

if online then use the virtual card while when in physical store/outlet then use the physical card.

Because you can freeze/unfreeze both physical/virtual card in the app itself, so you can segregate offline and online payment to prevent any fraud.

Like I will freeze the virtual one when I'm not in use, and unfreeze it if I wanna do any online payment/purchase.

You can still apply for the MAE card after you have registered a MAE account, on top of the principal saving one. If you happen to have used MAE (as ewallet only) before opened a saving account from Maybank, you can request for linkage with ur debit/ATM card at the branch where you opened the account.

And anyway, I guess you HAVE TO apply for the physical MAE card in that case, if you would like to clearly separate between saving & spending accounts, because AFAIK without doing so you wouldn’t even have access to your MAE card (be it virtual or not) number in order to perform contactless/online purchase, but yeah FPX is not affected at this point, just that you wouldn’t have a card where you can deduct your MAE’s balance from, as the ATM card can only be linked to your default saving account.

Could it be the details of virtual card is in the settings?

MAE's product disclosure sheet seemed to suggest that the virtual card is "automatically" allocated for new-to-Maybank customers.

Ok, I just registered for MAE as a new-to-Maybank customer.

After much clicking, I finally found the details of my virtual MAE card.

Under the "Maybank2u" option at the bottom of main screen, then click "Cards".

This is how it looks like on Android MAE app (should look the same on iOS version): -

hmmmm i think something else might be factor here…

the fees that Apple charges for Apple Pay is deducted from the bank’s share of the MDR cost that the merchant already paid - so to merchant’s perspective, the MDR cost will be the same as physical contactless. this is how it works worldwide already (also Maybank already on record stating MDR fees they charge to merchants is same as physical contactless)

what i think might be influencing this is how the terminal is setup. it’s possible that PBB terminal runs the transaction through a different card networks - ie. it will try myDebit first, then only Visa/Mastercard. so physical cards which have support local myDebit network can end up getting lower MDR fees than Apple Pay which must run through the foreign Visa/Mastercard network (which causes higher fees)

also PBB might have different MDR rates for different banks so that might be why the Alliance card have a lower cost than the Maybank ones

Yes.. I would agree. So lesson here is don’t bother mention Apple Pay. Just say paywave and if required mention Master or Visa.

Especially PBB terminals.. tend to have selective acceptance. Places like SENHENG, they use different card terminal depending what card u use. It guess it applies to Apple Pay which underlying card you use.

AP advantage is no rm250 limit. It will transact. Samsung pay subjected to the use PIN and guess it’s integration issue.

Senheng shouldn’t have any problem using apple pay cause both senheng and senQ join apple pay
