personally i think friends are not everything. my best buddies here are french since i face them everyday, badminton / drinking / party buddies are locals, talk cock whining buddies are msians and prcs, ocassional drinking with aussies and brits. heck got even so tired walking around till bored of it. i think the value of childhood friendship means more to me. thats why i cant figure out how some who emigrate to places like aus & uk, will 360deg adapt to the social circle there?. Long run, end up chinese mix chinese also. Some will be dog tail wagging wannabe whites, but I have and know my roots and tend to enjoy the malaysian life despite how fuked our country is to an extent. Justifiable from a perspective of better living? Well just a matter of time before you miss the roadside nasi kukus nasi lemak, goreng pisang, 'challenging' environment, variety of sights, stuffs like that. well at least to me SG is culturally diverse from the outside, but no depth at all. just walk around and see how superficial everyone is. chasing time, chasing money, chasing careers, double faces in work, ultimately you feel the sense of emptiness. the infrastructure, development yes are 5stars but its more like catered from the foreigners success. like what locals telling me it feels like being caged, espcially when expats (bunch of them!) easily making >15k + condo allowances + good car vs them confined in small rooms and smelling mrt armpits everyday. opps, a little off topic

first off, i nvr said anything abt forgetting ur roots.
i just gave a solution for the part where everyone complains of being lonely and having no friends which is very much in your own hands.
u are at a new place....u can either continue complaining and be miserable or try to make some changes and make your stay a bit more comfortable.
it may or may not work out in the making friends part....but if u do not try, u will definitely continue being miserable.

for the other factors, different approaches based on individuals.
for example, generally, most of us will say the food here sucks
for me, i eat to live and my favorite food is mcd anyway, so tat is nothing to me
for my wife, she lives to eat, so she goes by the thinking of " if u dun nitpick, it is still edible" then once a while pay the premium for those food you like which tastes like back home

Same la. I oso end up takling to the wall even i have a gaming laptop. I couldn't play any games due to another tenant hogging the line. Ping is mostly 500 to 1k-ish right after he come home from work....

Now, i bring my MY bikes and pay the $4 daily VEP and keep it inside SG. Yes, it cost me another $120-ish/mth to keep the bike but its worth it. Atleast i can jalan2 when i'm bored. Less time talking to the walls...

I tend to agree to some but not all , depth of culture in SG depend who you mix around with, to me life - style is similar to KL , diff is I am able to reach home earlier and better variety of drafts and places to have a drink .

Friends and companionship I believe is very individual .

For my case maybe abit unique some how quite a number of Uni kaki is here , in fact few group of them , some still finding hard to catch up .

Childhood friends well still very closely in touch , infact 1-2 buddy migrated (TW , AUS) , we always make a point to catch up with each other , if I go back if got time just go out catch up , if they travel here always make a point to meet up , some of them even bunk at my place - especially when those special marathon season going on, those in TW , AUS if I go there we meet there if they come over to SG I meet them , if we all go back to MY same time big gathering .

Thing do change after you are married , it is even harder to find time when you have kids .

When my spouse goes for long holiday is like Jail break for me , calling everyone out d !

Food wise Malay food I tend to agree Malaysia have better choices , for other Malaysian food I still think not that far off you just need to know where to get it ( so far KL Hokkien Mee can't find same standard as Jln Ipoh , but equivalent to PJ , Old Town still avail ) , in fact on concentration and variety SG you have more choices and higher quality for Jap, Korean and Western .

Look from other side of the coin you can find more S.E.A & International delicacy in SG compare to MY
- Thai > Beach Road
- Philippines > Lucky Plaza
- China > Geylang & China Town
- Indonesia > scattered around Singapore , revolve more in Geylang Serai - typical ones are Bakso , Padang , Penyet
- Korean > City Area - around Amoy Street
- Jap > City Area , Orchard / Clark Quay , Buono Vista
- Western : German , Sweedish , French , Greek , US , Italian > City Area , Holland V , East Coast , Buono Vista

Well the suckiest feeling is room size feels like divide by 2 , but yet again in KL if you are staying in Condo the size of flat you are buying here still similar 900 - 1200 sqft , well if you are renting a room then that's a different feeling .

Planning will be different for married couples usually they will plan to settle down in SG with children , thus finances are focus in SG and it isn't that difficult to get a resale unit in SG , SG resale starts at 300k KL - Penang decent condo start at 400k , SG typically maybe 1 car in MY must have 2 cars .

hi guys. i'm getting frustrated at getting no favorable response after sending my resumes to so many companies for a post of architect assistant. i've been jobless for almost 7 months now after finishing my degree in january. working in singapore sounds intimidating but the idea seems more and more attractive by the day. i'm gonna read this thread and do my research and hopefully i won't have to become a disappointment to my family any longer soon.

i suppose the labour market is extremely saturated and competitive right now? i'm not picky and willing to work anything but i bet whatever i apply, thousands of people will apply too and it's a scary thought. sweat.gif

try to get a placing in singapore first. jobs are getting lesser by the day and the employment passes threshold is getting higher and limited every year

for the salary u will not be disappointed compared to working in msia.

the more impt question is what can u offer versus ur peers AND singaporeans AND other nationalities that will make the sg company choose u instead of everyone else? think from the perspective of the singaporean company.

in my company its very meritocratic and they are more willing to hire msian (cause is msian company duh) but other MNCs are not so generous.

Yes Singapore is quite saturated now due to economical slowdown and foreigners flocking in. But it doesn't mean there is no chance, just keep trying

yeah, i already scavenged through jobstreet and there are lots of jobs that i feel i can apply. graphic designers, 2d concept artist, draughtsman, etc etc... i'm excited! should i just go on a limb and click "apply now"? i'm still at my parent's house in taiping, need to renew my passport and generally still having a lot to learn about this whole adventure i'm about to jump into. what if they call me for an interview and i can't make it? i could be banned from jobstreet. sweat.gif

hahaha! that's an interesting reply!
I'm not sure, maybe its just the guy you spoke to in specific, probably need to speak to more scholarly kinda people for that topic
But there is history there leading to why he said that, I read the Memoirs of Lee Kuan Yew which explains a lot related to that
Also explains a lot about Malaysian history too

I see...well maybe try looking for other jobs not directly related to architecture
Having a jobless period is very bad for your resume

Normally the kind of topics I find it's quite sensitive and awkward to talk with locals are:

1. National service for males there. PR vs. S'porean vs. foreigners
2. Corruption gossip in corporate and gov services
3. No muslims serving certain defence role. For the fear of espionage since S'pore is surrounded by Muslim countries, scare of attack
4. Treatment of scholars compared to others

Working is free is a reality that job graduate has to face. Got to gain a foot in the industry you love and work your way up.

I was informed by an acquaintance that I met, who works in book publishing industry - there are big pool of writers where they can offer to help you write articles or books. Their write up service is of good quality and so competitive is this market that some are writing for FREE. Was astounded when I hear that. My dream of writing a book can come to reality using such service

Hey no pain no gain they say
