Hey ex-state swimmer, can you give me some tips on how do you train your stamina, and essentials intensive training on the ground before going into the water. I know all the basics of the simming styles but all i lack is stamina and muscle tireness. For the moment, i can only do 75m in one shot.

hi there! call me ben will do... sweat.gif
basically we don't do much on ground training.. we just do like sit ups, skipping rope, all those that doesn't really help on stamina..
if u can't swim long on the water, try jogging... that helps on stamina too..
you must always push urself to the limit, like u said ur max is 75m in one shot rite? try to force urself to break the 100m barrier..
you can also time ur resting time, for instance, after 100m u only can rest for like 2min, and off u go again..
we are forced to train for long distance swim cos the coach is there watching us and if like we tend to be lazy, we need to leave the pool.. so try to motivate urself. icon_rolleyes.gif

you must always push urself to the limit, like u said ur max is 75m in one shot rite? try to force urself to break the 100m barrier..
you can also time ur resting time, for instance, after 100m u only can rest for like 2min, and off u go again..
we are forced to train for long distance swim cos the coach is there watching us and if like we tend to be lazy, we need to leave the pool.. so try to motivate urself. icon_rolleyes.gif
*
Thank you for the advices... Can i know what is the use for training with skipping ropes?

Hey ex-state swimmer, can you give me some tips on how do you train your stamina, and essentials intensive training on the ground before going into the water. I know all the basics of the simming styles but all i lack is stamina and muscle tireness. For the moment, i can only do 75m in one shot.
*
My experience as a polo player is try to use to the situation inside the pool. Like what Ben said, push yourself harder. Motivate and b confident on yourself. Try to train more often, maybe 4 days per week. For the time you are training, try to set a target for yourself. Let say 1st few days, u try to set 500m and complete in 1 hour. Then another week increase it by 20 - 30%. By following all this, u will notice differences within 2 weeks. That is what i did when i was playing polo. Hope my experience can help you... smile.gif

pool open from 9am to 12pm, 2pm to 5pm, 6pm to 9pm. Around Saturday around 12pm to 2.30pm and 7.30pm to 9.30pm swimming training. The night one is for the competitive swimming training.

Sunday morning they will also train, but seldom in the pool. Running training. Noon to 2.30pm got another round of kids training, evening i think around 5pm they got swimming class around.

You want to train to swim fast then 100m rest 20sec then go another 100m do that none stop then cutting down on ur resting time to 15 10 or 5 sec. Training for long distance is different pace already.

Hey ben how long is your long distance? I tend to get bored after moderate long distance swimming (around 30 laps)... coz nobody accompany me swimming, and the most important 1 no lenglui at that time... hehehe
Oh yeah i've an very bad experience in 3K last week... i met a bin tai lou (flasher).... i'm in the toilet looking at the mirror and i notice this malay guy sitting right behind of me looking at me... so i went shower and wanted to change my clothes and didn't care much... at that time i was lazy to close the door and that guy purposely get up from where he sits and wanted to watch me change... WTF! then i know something is not right... i quickly pack my things and wanted to leave... and while doing that... that guy just take his pants down and showing his little bro to me... OMG! i just leave the toilet as soon as possible...
BTW FYI i'm not a gay and 1000% doesn't look like a gay...

Forgoten to mention 1 thing. In order for ur legs to have enuf power and reduce tiring, we need to do "frog jump" very often to increase the power of the legs and reduce the chances of getting cramp... smile.gif

Ben, my reason for stopping : Too tiring , no time for myself, grades were going down. But i think the thing was .. I HAD NO TIME! Which was scary. I really wanted to continiue, cause i was at a good stage. With lots more practice could have at least represented Selangor or the PADE team. LOL, not too sure abt it tho tongue.gif

Yeah, if not 6 pack, flat stomach, but strong la wink.gif hehe

The women runners look sorta weird. Haha, yeap. Sexy indeed. If you do your share of sit ups and stuff like that, it would get you that six pack. Swimming makes you lean.

Yeah Ben, u have a point. Super good looking chest, flat lean stomach. LoLs

Another great swimmer forced to retire...

Heart disease forces Xuejuan to retire

BEIJING: Chinese Olympic gold medallist swimmer Luo Xuejuan has retired because of an unspecified but potentially fatal heart disease, state media reported yesterday.

The news came just days after her coach had dismissed speculation about her quitting the sport.

Xuejuan, who turned 23 on Friday, won the 100m breaststroke gold medal at the Athens Olympics and four breaststroke golds at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships, but has been struggling with form and fitness over the last couple of years.

"Her heart is no longer able to withstand athletic sports," China Youth Daily quoted an unnamed "medical expert" as saying at Xuejuan's farewell news conference in her home province of Zhejiang on Monday.

"It is life-threatening if she plays world-class games such as the Olympics under this condition, but fortunately her daily life will not be affected."

After being given two months off last July for "physical problems" and "mental stress", Xuejuan returned to winning ways at Asian Games trials.

But she missed the trip to Doha after fainting during training last November and was diagnosed with either exhaustion or low blood pressure.

She was dropped from the squad for March's World Championships after a reportedly unsuccessful heart surgery.

"It means we have lost our best hope for gold medals at the 2008 Olympics," China Youth Daily quoted the country's head swimming coach Zhang Yadong as saying.

"No one else in the current squad can reach her standing on the world stage ... the Beijing Games has become an ever more arduous task for us." - Reuters

Try to exercise on "frog jump" to provides ur tight to have more powers. After few weeks of doin so, u will notice u can even stand for more than 30 mins.

There is 1 more way to strengthened ur tight, but i cant show it. I dunno what we call that. I can actually brief it for u. Its like swimming in the pool with breast stroke kick. When u kick, u have to kick from the bottom of the pool an ur whole body have to up from the water. If can see ur "pusat" then it will b great. Try that non - stop for 100M. 2 days per week. U will notice the difference. flex.gif

No...u did not contact anything. Just breastroke kick from the button and your whole body have to up. Actually i ms 1 thing. It supposely to kick twice. Once u kick up already, u kick another to stay your body up above the water.

"Pusat" is right at your tummy there. The tiny little 1? smile.gif

erm... guess so... i've also have this prob cause compete under hot sun and life saving courses.. although i didn't swim under hot sun anymore.. but the white butt is still there till now.. so i can conclude that it will stay forever... unless ur born damn fair then ur skin will turn back fair lo..

Hi guys.
i try to push my swmming to next level both stamina and skill on my own, (22 is too old to join a swim team right ? biggrin.gif ). i try reading those swim training books, but i find it quite difficult to understand the term and sets.
Any experience swimmer or althete here can tell me some swim training schedule (like how many reps and sets) and workout? biggrin.gif

thanks.

Swimmer's shoulder's:

1. What's your mileage per session or per week?

2. When do you start to feel sore?

3. Do you alternate with different styles? If so, how do you do so?

If you only do freestyle do you get the pain earlier?

22 is not too old to join a training team. The difficult part is in finding a team that's willing to train you. smile.gif (In 3 years' time, you'll be eligible to join the Masters Championship.)

Best thing would be for you to train on your own if you can't find a team that's willing to train you. Work on your endurance first -- start with slow distance swims and then gradually work on increasing the intensity of your workouts.

3. i dont quite get it sweat.gif

Cool, a swimming thread. Was a state and national (age-group) swimmer back in school .. like .. 10+ years ago. Have to admit that since then .. I definitely don't have the body of a swimmer any more wub.gif but I still swim every few months.

I love this site for complete swim workouts.

Added on May 14, 2007, 6:15 pmguys..i have a question here

is it 'wrong' to swim (front crawl) with a kicking board put between the legs and cross the feet?

i did that recently..find it a little hard to do the stroke..i thought that's because i'm not used to that 'style'

but then a kid was doing the same got scolded by his coach..i din hear what the coach said but i can guess from his gestures told the kid to do laps as punishment

there's nothing wrong with it instead its a very good to train ur upper body strength and maintaining balance without kicking.. but using a kick board, wouldn't it be a lil big? try a buoy instead.. thus, u'll find it easier to swim..

owh thanks man..i thought it's me who's doing it wrong

yeah it really helps to correct the hand stoke and would be easier using buoy..it's the smaller thing shaped like err bow tie..right?

You can do pulling with the kick board but because of the length you'll "swish" back & forth a lot in the water. Be sure that you're focused on your form and headed straight i.e. not fish tailing about. Think that's the only issue.

Also be sure not to put it at your knees, since there's a chance you may twist/dislocate them.

My 02 cents.

what do u mean 'the length'?
is it the kick board being put horizontally between the legs?

for me i put it vertically..so most of its length is above the surface..people see it like a shark fin laugh.gif

Ya vertically. Horizontally is just too weird/difficult smile.gif

Anyway get a pulling board and you should have no problems. [I hate pulling, think most girls hate pulling .. ha ha]

I'm old so we call them "boards". When I swam still had those kick boards that were like styrofoam type .. with that horrible squeaky sound .. yuck.

And it's just you that think it's kinky wink.gif

There's nothing wrong with using the kick board in the pull exercise. It's a form of resistance training actually and very useful in teaching the kids to keep their feet and knees together with their legs properly tucked in when doing flip turns. In fact, when I train my team, I have them use kick boards for pulling exercises sometimes. We do less work with paddles however. Too much paddle work may cause shoulder injuries.

I suppose the kid was being scolded by his coach for using the kick board because he forgot to bring his pull buoy to practice.

Try some interval training or fartlek swims. Here's something very simple to start off:
1x200 @ 4:30 EN1 Moderate }
10x50 @ 1:10 EN2 Fast/Hard } 1 set
1x100 @ 2:30 REC Easy Swim }

ok this is Andrew's recommendation..

can u tell me which part u don't understand? i'll elucidate it for u smile.gif

Hmm, what do you mean by that? With my hair kinda long, i do wear a cap. But, my hair does feel a bit rough after coming out of the water.

After washing with shampoo and conditioner, its back to normal icon_rolleyes.gif

Maybe here's the proper place to ask.

I want to learn swimming and I'm in Ampang area. Is there any place nearby where swimming lessons are available?

I heard Bandar Tun Razak Swimming Complex has but I have no contact number.

hello guys.. i have a couple question on swimming...

1) can we gain "six pack" from just swimming 5 times a week for an hour each session?

2) which swimming style is the best (i can swim non-stop breaststroke for one hour but it's boring, currently learning free style, but it's very tiring lol, and butterfly, it's very hard when u are trying to fly up and down the water.. guess i should practice it everyday to cope with the stamina i needed to swim those style right ?

3) i dont have trouble breathing using breaststroke, but i always exhausted when swimming free style, but not butterfly.. butterfly the problem i have is after a 5-6 fly, my shoulder getting tired and cant held my hand as good as b4 the 1-6th fly..

1)i personally think,sit-ups are more effective at giving u 'instant' six packs compared to swimming unless u have a competetive training programme..but depends also laa whether u want ur six packs for swimming purposes or sumthing else.. smile.gif

2)what do u actually mean by best?faster?if faster, freestyle is definitely faster then breastroke but for beginners, breastroke is always the easiest stroke to swim..it might be hard to believe but freestyle is easier then breaststroke if u get ur strokes right..about the butterfly, try stretching ur arms on a daily basis..the tiredness u feel on ur shoulders might be due to stifness in ur arms..and yes..stamina is important as well..

3)see above..

just my 2 cents..perhaps benzene88 cud add sumthing as well? smile.gif

Wanna drop some add-ons as aztechx advise was good enough.

1) six pack is based on your total body fat. if ur already thin, maybe u'll see some improvement. But for me, i'm quite plump last time so hardly seen only chest form nicely. And my training is competition based 6 times a week 2 hours per session.

2) there is no best style in swimming but for fastest, its definitely free style.
Obviously free style needs more stamina compared to breast stroke. Thus, do free style if u wanna improve ur distance and stamina.

3) Butterfly need a tremendous amount of stamina and ur core strength and flexibility plays a vital role. Constant practice will be a bonus. Get ur breast stroke and free style right first before starting butterfly.

Happy Swimming biggrin.gif

Hi guys, a newbie here. I'm currently into running, but I'll be doing swimming after fasting season. I used to swim last time when I stayed in Ipoh, went swimming near Stadium Ipoh there. Last time i remember I could only do 50m.

I'm actually interested in Triathlon, so I want to increase my distance and stamina.

So as a newbie, I just want to introduce myself here in this thread. Nice to meet you guys (bow, bow), sila beri tunjuk ajar and tips(bow, bow).

To swim in a straight line, you'd need to keep your body straight or inline. That means, when you pull, roll your shoulders but do not roll your head. This takes practice.

When you're near the finish in backstroke, there's such thing as the 5-meter flag. This flag (or rope) tells you that you're just 5 meters away from the turning or finishing wall. With practice, you'll learn to count your strokes the moment you pass under the 5-meter flag and you'll get used to how many strokes you make after the 5-meter flag before you turn or finish.

Alright, Ive this big race sort of thing in a months time, I can swim pretty ok. Nice timing my friends would say, but i lack is stamina. i used(its been a year since i swam) to swim every sunday, i would swim breaststroke for 80 laps (25meters). But when it comes to freestyle i can do 100M but relaxing. So i know its been talked before, but how much should i swim a week, while training stamina do i go as fast as i can and try breaking the limit? or how?

its not how much u should swim a week, but its how much can u swim a week.
for stamina, do endurance training.
swim as long distance as u can with a pace.. not relaxing type.. distance and speed counts.

Thanks for the reply. When you say pace, doesnt mean i have to swim as fast as i can right? how would the endurance training be like? Would it be like swim as much as i can >rest> continue? how long should i rest?

yup.. when u pace urself means swim at an appropriate speed.. not too fast and not too slow.. and speed should not decrease as you swim.
maybe u can set ur target to 400m non-stop with 2-3mins interval..
if u think its time to get to next level, increase ur distance to 600m, 800m and so on.. with the same time interval.

Keep trying. Keep doing what you have been doing but gradually increase the repetitions. You can also try to cut down on your rest time. smile.gif

A lap is just one lap of whatever pool you're in.

Alright .. it seems you don't get my question.

Just assume, I am swimming in an Olympic size swimming pool. 50m consider one lap ?

In competitive swimming training, a "lap" is generally referred to as an "interval". A lap or an interval can refer to various distances. For example, if you're told to swim 10 laps of 50's @ 1:10, it would mean 10x50m swims @ 1:10, with 1:10 being the interval time for each 50m.

Ooh ... in that case, you may have over-committed yourself. You shouldn't attempt something your body's not ready to do.

Yes, that's exactly what I was saying. So, if the pool is a 50m pool, then one lap is 50m, from one end to the other. If it was a 25m pool, a lap would be 25m.

A 'lap' is not a measure of absolute distance, it is basically defined as 'from one end of the pool to the other'. This is the standard definition.

In a circuit, like a racing circuit, a 'lap' is traversing the entire circuit from a start point/line, and back to it.

Hi all,

Anybody know where to take swimming lessongs in the DJ, DU, TTDI area?Hope somebody here can help.

Anybody can recommend a good place? I asked my friends and they suggested the following:
- MPBJ public pool near the MAS building in Kelana Jaya (closest one I found to my house, but still have to travel a bit)
- Tropicana, but not sure exactly where. Anybody know this place?
- Sunway Swimming near Sunway University College (they even have a website @ http://www.swimlesson.com.my/), but this place is a bit too far from my house
- University Malaya, does anybody know if its open to the public?

Anybody know anyplace else in the area? Thanks in advance.
