the boiling point of water at 9 bar gauge (10 bar absolute), at which you get steam... is 180 degC...

your pressurestat...at most is set to 1.5 bar... so 127 degC max

so at 9 bar...it is never hot enough to flash to steam whilst pulling the shots and crack your puck

the flashing steam when you flush is pressurized superheated water sitting in the hx/behind the solenoid valve suddenly released to atmospheric conditions...

when you flush, you add cold water to the hx, trying to bringing it down below 90 degC...

as you lock it the portafilter and start the pull...the temperature will have raise to 93-97 degC...

depending on machines...some need more flushing...some less... some not require... and some needs flushing to heat up... wink.gif

You are right that flushing works. But it's ALOT of flushing. In comparison, this is easier and the added bonus of extra extraction %. This makes it a viable option
In fact what I found is, I can't predict how much to flush for the Oscar. I've drained alot before and still get superheated steam flashes right away in the next pull (doesn't make sense I know but it is what it is).

It could be something else completely that's breaking the puck surface but you now have 1 solution that can protect against whatever the machine decides to throw at your puck
Super stable shots now. Stronger taste too
*
yeah...my machine needs lots of flushing too... I must flush for every shot...and I must pull immediately after flushing...no waiting otherwise it will superheat quick and needs another round of flushing ... I've gotten used to it and so it's predictable to me... smile.gif

the filter trick affected brewing time by slowing down flow a bit...that's why you get stronger tastes without over extraction...

anyways... if it works it works be happy... wink.gif

Niche Zero cheapest is thru kickstarter. Every month they will put out 50 units for sale. Make sure you get the right voltage. But you take the risk on paying tax plus sometimes required Suruhan Tenaga certification which is really troublesome. I bought mine from Dankoff with 10% discount. As for the scale, I wouldn't pay more than RM 100 for it. Frankly speaking, just get a scale from Lazada or Shopee. If you need auto timer scale, last I check is around RM 60++ but only 0.1g accuracy. For 0.01g accuracy without timer, I bought it around RM 30++ few years back.

I found this website https://magstreet.com/niche-zero-w.html
It's selling at 3,200.00
Anybody knows whether this is a scam site? It's cheaper than dankoff.

For the scale, thanks for the info. Will check on lazada/shopee.

very simply - one with filter, one without filter (paper filter i mean)
and I'm assuming you're comparing long black from espresso vs filter from v60 yea?

If it's pure espresso vs filter, then espresso is a more intense cup of coffee where all flavors are compacted into roughly 30ml vs being stretched out in a 240ml filter brew
Kinda like drinking whisky by shots or diluted with ice/water - stronger vs spreading out flavors

The lack of filter in espresso brewing will give you more oils/dissolved solids in the cup so a higher perception of tactile - mouthfeel, finish, body. Also a little more bitter/gritty because of sediments going through

But it is this intense shot that makes it mixable with milk and other stuffs without getting drowned out (again, similiar to a shot of alcohol)

I'm using this at home and I can say extraction is inconsistent. Due to the pressurestat design inside, temps are not as stable as PID. It tends to overheat and shoot steam out from the brew head. I believe this is causing chanelling for me because I could see holes when reviewing the puck post-extraction.
I just ordered a new IMS shower screen just to see if that can help
*
i got the oscar ii in
i normally turn the machine on for 20 minutes prior to brewing.
then i prepare my puck, do a 2s water dump before inserting in the portafilter to extract.
i'll wait 10-15s if the water dump comes out steam, then do another 2s water dump before extraction.

so far, temp seems ok. not much channeling..
coffee starts dripping at 9s+, got faster at 15s, managed to hit 36g in 25s
but dialing in is kinda hard, but now i roughly know where should i grind from my grinder.. and I also dialed in using the plastic tamper.. since i've been waiting for my barista hustle tamper to arrive

today I received my BH tamper, switched over to VST basket 20g and managed a 22s 38g shot on 19g dose, which i think is slightly underextracted, I dosed 20g on same grind setting, still 22s shot. Need to try finer grind size, but then my beans ran out sweat.gif

Thanks for the info. I looked but price seems to be way higher? On shopee the Q2 is RM580. On Taobao after conversion it's around RM400 IIRC.

Evening guys.

Anyone using NS Oscar 2?

just got mine from Dankoff after 2 weeks held up by poslaju. Unfortunately received in really bad condition. Box was really soaking wet and disintegrating. Machine was dented a bit. But the most concerning thing is that the boiler seems to not heating up. I follow the provided quick guide, and waited for almost 40 minutes but the light for boiler still light up. The pump seems to be ok.

Do you guys think the machine is defective or am i missing something?

The boiler/reservoir may not have been empty when packaged and the wet box could very likely be water from inside. In this case, you might worry about soaked internal electrical/electronic damages as well.

Anyways, assuming it survived, did you do the double fill? If delivered correctly to you, the boiler will need 1.5x amount of water from the reservoir to fill and initiate boil
If that is already done, then 40mins is way too long. My Oscar 2 gets the temps up within 10-15mins or so
