Hi all. I normally make a cup for myself (around 230-250g water) and sometimes another cup for my S.O, in which case I'd normally use a Clever or if I'm feeling particularly malas, a french press. Considering my normal use case, any reason why I should go for a Hario Skerton instead of their Mini Mill?

the main diff between the two is capacity. you may google the exact grams. second, is burr design. the mini is more stable and produce more consistent grinding. if you need the capacity and better grind consistency, the skerton pro would be the best option if it is available in Msia. there is a video on YouTube that gave a brief product explanation on the mini slim +, skerton + and the skerton pro.

Edit: for two cups a session, the mini slim + should be sufficient (@ ~1:16 ratio). the burr adjustment is easier on the mini too.
*
Thanks for the input. That's good to know. I'm not sure if Skerton Pro is available locally, tho. From internet searches, the Slim + capacity is 24g. That's almost the full amount I use to brew with the L Clever. If I decide to brew with Aeropress, that would mean grinding twice sad.gif

Has anyone here bought/tried the Handground?

Managed to meet and chat a bit with sifu  ymeng85 during the Indie Coffee roaster fest!

Going to let the Kenya rest a few more days before I brew them.

Thanks for the roasting tips!

If i'm qualified to offer an oppinion about your remark below, i can say NO.. ZD-10/T is not a good and value choice grinder (apart from it's small footprint).. there are better alternatives at similiar price point.

Interesting. Mind sharing what those better alternatives are? I'm in the market for a good grinder as well.

Hi, Im new to coffee and know very little about it. But im looking for a place to learn about brewing coffee eg. hario v60 and aeropress. I just want to learn to brew at home. Anyone can suggest where i should start? Any place i can take a beginner's course for hand brews?
*
If I'm not mistaken, during the Indie Coffee Fest a couple of weeks back, I saw that QCup is offering classes on brewing, roasting, etc. Might be just what you're looking for. Try contacting them on FB. https://www.facebook.com/qcupcafe/

Hope this helps!

Where can I buy #2 paper coffee filters locally in KL? I've been using the BonCafe brown-colored ones, but I'm almost running out of it. I've only seen #4 and very small-sized filters (#1?) at Daiso. I'm looking for bleached #2, preferably. Otherwise natural/brown ones will also do.

What are you brewing on?
I think what you're asking is bleached vs unbleached
Are you getting weird taste with the unbleached?
*
Aeropress, v60, clever..mostly. I haven't detected any weird flavours with the natural Boncafe ones that I've been using. Just wondering if there are any other #2 filters (preferably bleached, but otherwise unbleached also ok) I could try that's easily available to buy.

Oh was asking which device to see what paper are you looking for
Aeropress/V60/Clever are all different paper designs haha

I get my V60 from beanshipper.com. Clever still back to Daiso  biggrin.gif
*
Ah, ok, sorry..I should've specified it more clearly. What I'm looking for are the flat-bottom/truncated cone/fan-shaped/Melitta-style filters in #2 size...and not filters for the v60 nor the aeropress smile.gif

So you use the Daiso #4 filters in your Clever? Bleached or otherwise? I spotted some the other day, but decided not to buy any because it's a #4.

my experience is that not all daiso stock up same.
i bought some #2, bleached, at daiso, starling mall.
*
That's true, stocks differ at all the Daiso's I've been to.

So the ones you bought at Starling are #2 size for sure?

Hi, anybody went to CAFFA 2018?

I did, on Saturday. Had fun. Couple of SG roasters making inroads into the Malaysian market.

Highlight of the day for me was seeing Tetsu Katsuya in person smile.gif

I got in... biggrin.gif

First shipment is taking too long...
It's a new kind of coffee subscription. Subscribe to them and you'll receive a mystery box. You brew and guess what beans is it. New in Malaysia (as far as I'm aware of). It is quite pricey though. They just opened for business so they are doing "early-access", pay for shipping and you get a box of your choice.
*
Thanks for the info. I googled it yesterday and yup, agreed that the subscription price is a bit steep for what you'll be receiving. The concept is new here, but it has been done before elsewhere, i.e. Angel's Cup. Still, have to applaud them for doing this kind of thing in Malaysia. IMHO they need to tweak their pricing and then ideally tie-in with a mobile app like Angel's Cup, whereby subscribers can guess the coffee they're brewing in the app and share it with other subscribers or on social media. That will really get the ball rolling.

We didn't check each vendors there, but did noticed that in general, roasted coffee beans are getting more and more pricy.. Maybe, RM300-400/kg range will start appearing soon?
*
Hmm, I did notice certain local vendors at CAFFA '18 were selling their roasted coffee beans at around RM70 for 200/250g. Kinda pricey. On the other hand, I saw two roasters from SG selling their wares at very reasonable prices, and with very affordable shipping fees to boot. I bet they will be somewhat disruptive to local coffee roasters.

QUOTE(Ryou @ Oct 4 2018, 02:20 PM)
RM40~50 for 200g pack is quite reasonable for specialty coffee.

I didn't go that day, what are the general price range you see? sweat.gif
*
Nowadays quite hard to find 250g bags going for under RM40, unless it's a blend. RM45-55 is quite typical for single origins. I myself tend to stick to those that are priced around RM0.2 per gram.

QUOTE(Tikietic @ Oct 4 2018, 05:20 PM)
Maybe a little context is appropriate here?

We have been consuming (and still do) home produce espresso based coffee for the past 4 years. Thus the observation of the price hike over the years.

Quality grade (SCAA or nearing SCAA) roasted coffee is still obtainable at below RM100/kg albeit less M'sian roasters are doing it.

RM100-200/kg is the readily available source now although most boutique/artisan roasters readily offer their products at RM200-ish/kg range.

RM200/kg is expensive bro..
*
I haven't bought any coffee in 1kg bags before, so really don't know if there's price hike or otherwise. But, one would think that buying in bulk will net you some savings, so I guess sub-RM200 for 1 kg bag is reasonable? Where do you normally source your coffee from?

Tempting. Do they have an online webshop, or did you buy yours by walk-in to their cafe at Citta Mall?
