I hang my head in shame.... I've decided to re-pressurize my portafilter.

No matter what I've done, I can't seem to get an extraction longer than 16 seconds... tried increasing grind size, tried decreasing grind size, light tamp, hard tamp, swirling round with a toothpick.... output was very inconsistent: I would say I only got acceptable quality about 10% of the time. Yes, the few times it came out right it was a pretty decent shot, perhaps better than with the pressurized, but the inconsistency was way too frustrating.

I am waiting for the PID components to come in (should be within 2 weeks) so will try this first before making a second attempt at depressurizing.

Did you manage to grind fine enough to choke the machine? Perhaps the grinder can't grind fine enough.

bro, had a go at the oscar today, difficult to steam the milk for micro foam, also impossible to pull shot without a scale but tried anyway  sweat.gif

any tips?

hopefully get a scale next week

E61 group user as well. I'm a beginner so I'm still using my scales for grinds and measuring output. I found it was impossible as a newbie to be consistent without a scale. But once I bought a scale, I even found out that my tamping was off 50% of the time since grind size and weights were locked but extraction time was all over the place.

LittleGhost is right about steaming. Also, YouTube the Oscar, I'm sure you can find some videos from WholeLatteLove or Seattle Coffee Gear.

Don't think the Oscar is an E61 though..... hmm.gif

Yea, the 4 hole steam wand was crazy for me when I first used it as well. There's like only a small window for the pfftt pffft action but what I found was that you only need 2-3 of that stretching and just go with dipping in and lotsa whirpooling of the milk instead. Get's you a nice 260ml milk done in about 10secs

Question about superautomatics, how good are the superautomatics compared to a very novice level person like me?

I drink almost exclusively milk based coffee (lattes). I'm currently on the Baratza Encore + Saeco Poemia combo, using mostly light to medium roast beans from beam/sprezzatura/beanshipper/antipodean. I can make my lattes better than pretty much any store bought latte now, but the prep and cleanup time does take a lot of time. Trying to aim for less maintenance work without compromising taste if at all possible. Volume is very low, maybe 7-8 shots per day between the wife and I.

Looking at a Jura Ena 9 which I can get for a decent price which is why I'm asking this question biggrin.gif

I own both Ena 8 and Macap M4 + Poemia (depresurrized + PID). If you are willing to lower your expectation and in pinch of time, Ena 8 make a passable latte and cappuccino. Note that Super Auto is quite picky on the bean especially oily type.

Also, don't think that Superauto is maintenance free. You still need to dump the ground and clean up the the milk hose after use. Every few months will need to do a flush using Jura cleaning tablet.

does anyone have recommendations for a weighing scale that does not kill the wallet?

I'm currently using a generic one, but it is always off by 2-5g

Thanks, I'm beginning to think that buying the superauto is not such a good idea. biggrin.gif Will probably upgrade my grinder instead.

7-8 shots? Single or double? I only drink 2 double shot in my family. Jura is a pain if u play with milk. The rubber tube pain to clean unless u buy their expensive cleaning products.

Jura ena 9 will make decent latte but clean up time is just as long imho. I own a ena 3 and the milk blow up just piss me off. If u just drink black it's better than nespresso in some ways

7-8 single shots. I'm seriously thinking that the Jura is not worth the effort or price. Might as well open up this Nescafe Dolce Gusto, at least it's true convenience.

Thanks!

i have been making 2 shot every morning with double basket portafilter. i make one shot into latte & discard the other one short. wonder does anyone doing the same thing like me with their oscar. i only need single shot, but believe that single shot portafilter may affect the quality of shot ><
i use fresh espresso blend rm 60/500g. Lately placed order for 500g lebistro coffee. How to follow up the order? How long it takes to deliver?

I know you're rich but that can't be good for the environment. Good coffee beans will eventually become a scarcity.

> good coffee
> latte

Pick one.

Jokes aside, just pull it as a ristretto instead, most likely tastes better too.

does your oscar group head screen use a flathead screw or protruding hex screw?

Agreed. Double ristretto pulled from 18g on the Oscar has tasted way better. Ever since, I've moved away from lattes (more milk) because of this
