Sifus,

If i change the stock Dahon Rotolo tires ( 2.0 x 1.75) to Schwalbe Big Apple ..Can we still fit in the original fender as its much fatter.

Is the Big Apples much better than the rotolo in terms of handling and comfort? What are the negatives compared to Rotolo?

Appreciate the input. Thx.
*
Depends on the type of fender you have. I've got Big Apples and fits the stock fenders. No experience with Rotolo, but the Big Apples are very comfortable. Handling? how much would you need? biggrin.gif
WILL add weight to your bike for sure! Just lose some of your weight to compensate, hahaha

My Link D8 squeak too, at the folding part. That's a real solution? not a joke right? I'm going to try that.
*
It works for me, my tape is chemical resistance & can stand up to 200 deg C type, mahai punya... just tape where u see paint came off area at folding part.

Oso if u got a loose joint and two metal rubbing, that's where squeak sound come from, like seatpost etc...

I was hoping not to have to cut by buying the correct length spokes. I'm not going to rush it, wait till the hub is here, there work it out.  Thanks!
*
From the link on my former comment you can determine the spoke length. They do sell different spoke lengths. As for lacing, single lace is ......... (one pair, one upwards and one downwards is one pair) , the single lacing is 2 empty slots between per pair. Double lace is 4 empty holes between the pair. Lacing is actually how many times the spokes intersect each other. The more they intersect the stronger the build. Happy building! It takes a lot of effort but worth it. Remember that truing is easy but getting the spokes tension even and most of all, getting the rims totally round is the hardest.

A forummer bought a 16 inch rims from me and has find difficulty in sourcing the 20/20 holed hubs for the rims. It's not available in Malaysia actually but it can be bought online from Taobao, China. I have no idea with regards to the said forummer's front fork width as there are 2 different widths. One as used by Dahons and Terns are 74mm and the other the usual 100mm (usually those with disc brakes). The 74mm offers more rigidity and stronger as the spokes are not too angled from the rims. That's why Dahons and Terns choose that width, probably.

There's another option , though. You can get the front hubs (20 holes) from here if you are using 74mm.

http://bicyclebuysell.com/item/311012/kene...bearing-freepos
np la sifu et
and if you are using 100mm forks, you can get the adapters here.

http://bicyclebuysell.com/item/333141/lite...pter-dahon-tern

As for the rear, you can go for either a 24 hole or a 32 hole ones and skip a few holes while lacing. The distance is so small, I don't think it will affect the truing of the rims and more so because the rims are only 16 inch diameter. So, use with confidence. The only drawback is.................most LBS are not interested to do it as there might be a few spokes modifications. You might need to adjust the length of the spokes.

I would suggest though that you take this set. It is the 24 for the rear and the 20 for the front. This eliminates a lot of problems.
http://bicyclebuysell.com/item/204486/nova...24-free-pos-w-m

And if you want to use the regular , more easier and off course cheaper as it is common 32 holes for the front and rear, I have drawn the spokes lacing patterns. The red dots on the smaller circle are the SKIPPED holes. Both the 24 and 32 holes are fine if you look at the lacing of the spokes. Shouldn't be a problem. Good luck !  thumbup.gif

This is the 24 holes lacing.

and.............this is the 32 holes lacing.

If you have contacted me earlier, I could have done it for you but I am now in Taiping, so it's a bit hard. If you want to mod the spokes yourself like I do, get this ; The size of the spoke nipples are a bit special though. Most nut and bolts store stocks only 2,3,4,5,6mm etc but not 2.5mm which is the size for the spokes. I got it from Central Nuts and Bolts in Jalan San Peng, K.Lumpur. You get longer spokes, for mountain bikes, these are the easiest to get anyway and then measure and cut to length needed and tread it.

Water and gas plumbing Teflon tape should be easy enough to find if it is the same thing. I'd prefer a permanent fix though.

Hi all,

Thinking of getting a folding bike and came to here, which helps a lot for me to understand what is available on the market.

I work in Australia atm but have planned a trip back in Penang(Bukit Mertajam. Eyeing for Dahon Vitesse D8 atm, as I planned to use it about twice a week for commute and have to go up/down staircase quite often during the trip. About 2.5km from my place to train station.

I saw a lot of bike shop in KL but not much in Penang. Do anyone know/recommend bike shop there? I might consider call and ask shops from KL to deliver to Penang if the price difference is a lot.

BTW, there is a owner selling Tern7 for AUD250(about RM750)+approx rm210 to go there and get it. I have asked the owner and he said it is a 2013 model and he had cycled about 10-15km every workday for a year(approx 3000-4000km). Do you think is a good deal?

For that price plus the price of travelling to get it, it is not worth the trouble for a used unit. You can get the Tern Link here, brand new by just adding RM300. This saves you the trouble of transporting it here as well. The bikes are priced more expensive in Penang , maybe because Penang's businessman are more professional and don't wage price war againts each other. Chin Aik in Carnarvon St. is the agent for Dahon and Terns but if you check with Kimbell Jaya in KL, they will send the bike to you for an extra RM40 to RM50. Just call Jimmy the owner of Kimbell Jaya and discuss with him.

Where abouts are you in Aust currently. You can sometimes pick up a good deal here and just check it in and bring it home. Look out for the higher end models as these would be the ones worth buying. Depends on what you budget is of course.

Thanks etigge! Most likely I will do this then. I know in GW cycle boutique blog show rm1650 for vitesse d8 . Do you think it is worth haggling a bit with Kimball jaya or this price is considered obsolete and now cost more? Thanks.
I can only start making calls when back in Malaysia but like to do some homework first.

I am in Sydney. Hard to find those deal with ebay and gumtree with my budget (about aud500). The retail were marked up a lot more and hence even with good discount% for second hand , it is hard to beat the price in Malaysia.

If your budget is AUD500, there's a lot of choices for you in Malaysia, especially in KL. If you are willing to get used unit, it's even cheaper. But I am sure a Tern D7 is about RM1400 or slightly less if you don't want freebies. A few days before you come back, check the bicyclebuysell site.
