I would definitely buy a used higher end model rather than a new entry model.  You get better/nicer parts.  It is only a bicycle, so don't worry if it is a few years old.  Make sure the frame is not damage, hinges ok, and everything else is adjustable.

You buy a entry model, then upgrade, you will definitely over-spend and definitely lose money.  

Can someone please recommend a good bike shop in Penang?  I'm heading over there soon, and I want to see if I can get some parts there. I know there's a new Brompton shop, what about other foldies?

OK the lady obviously did not look after the bike too well. I would give it a good clean and polish and good oiling. Looks like it has been left outdoors? Check if gear changes smoothly as the cables may have stretched and the RD is a bit rusted. Are the rims running true and brakes OK? If she hadn't used it much, the folding clamps should be tight. Just check.

You still need a cassette opening tool. The one shown is just to hold the cassette. And also you need a spanner wide enough to unlock the cassette opener.

Get the Shimano type and it should fit. Presumably you have a cassette, not a freewheel?

No, you CANNOT do that !    8 speed shifters means 8 speed cogs/cassette. Also chain is of different width. Common sense tells you that a 8,9 and 10 speed cassette can fit into the same hub on the wheelset. So, this means the total width are the same for all 3 different cassette. So, it means the thickness of the cogs are different in the 3 types and the pull of the shifters cable are of different length. Yes, I do hear from say, " Works perfectly, it can be used" . Do you want to try that and go riding? 

Have you crossed the 2nd bridge? Bicycles are banned from using the bridge, as far as I know.

As for the chain, you going to ruin the extra chain length if you take out one by one. Set the RD at the smallest cog and the front chainring (you got only one chainring). Just adjust the length where the chain doesn't touch the RD cage. As long as possible but not touching the RD cage when it is at the smallest cog.

Ok, I don't know how you guys do it. I hired a bike to cycle around in Georgetown this morning at 10am and it soooo hot. I was completely drenched in just an hour, and the traffic was so bad. Wanted to cycle by the ocean but ran out of time. I think I'll bring my own bike next time.
