this is a classical music thread.. so let`s talk about classical music!! smile.gif

name your top 5 symphonies.. smile.gif

mine would be..

5) Nielsen - Symphony No. 4, "The Inextinguishable"
4) Brahms - Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98
3) Elgar - Pomp And Circumstance March
2) Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 "Choral"
1) Beethoven - Symphony No. 7 in A major (Op. 92)

many people would put beethoven 9th as their number 1 compared to beethoven 7th... well.. this is just my preference.. smile.gif i have my reasons for it..

what about yours? wink.gif

My favourite symphony is Gustav Mahler's 5th Symphony.

Can't really decide on the other four sweat.gif

Haha...
The symphony I like most (recently) is Scriabin - Symphony No. 1
But only to the 2nd (Allegro dramatico) and 5th (Allegro) movement...

the other is Dvorak - "From the New World" Symphony No. 9
Beethoven 8th, 1st movement is my recent favorite too...

anyway, I seldom listen to Symphony now...
more on Concerto like Elgar's Cello Concerto, Bach's Harpsichord Concertos

If I'm not mistaken, there is also a piano competition by Roland Asia Pacific...
You can try that
http://www.rolandap.com/main.php?pg=eventsd&events_id=1

I also listen to concerto now... seldom listen to symphony...
Now start to like Bach's Harpsichord Concerto
I found the Glenn Gloud version, but he play on piano... sad.gif

You can try Grieg, Khachaturian, Tchaikovsky (1st), Rachmaninoff (2nd & 3rd), Beethoven (Emperor), Ravel's Piano Concerto
Other than that, can also try Bruch (1st), Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, Sibelius, Brahms's Violin Concerto

This doesn't sounds like Classical......
It sounds more like it is mixing with other genre, or maybe a different genre totally...

How do you gain entrance to that asean international chopin piano competition? Can you give me more details on it like where and when it is held?

I guess if you like piano you should go for lang lang's performance next season in MPO since its all sold out now. sad.gif
Well you can still try for any cancellations.

BTW do you guys consider nobuo uematsu's(final fantasy 1-10 music composer) pieces as classical music? I guess this question include current day movie composition like John Williams and howard shore's pieces.

My friend said it is free admission, and no specific dress code......

I think I have post the official link for this competition in this thread before... sweat.gif
try look for it yourself (hint: it is in same page)

About the composer question...
A composer that have composed a Classical Music can consider as Classical Music composer, but it doesn't mean all his/her music is Classical

Ahh pardon my noobness here as I dare not click on the link as I was in the office. =_=

Yeah I get your point on the composer but Im still not sure what is the strict definition of classical since there are still so called classical pieces being composed in this era.
